Transactions Thru the Winter Meetings

These transactions will take us through the Rule 5 Draft on the last day of Baseball’s Winter meetings.  They include two free-agent signings (Turner and Strahm).  Still waiting for the official announcement of the third signing (Walker).

When the Taijuan Walker signing is announced, a corresponding move will have to be made to make room on the 40-man roster.

12/09/2022

Phillies signed free agent LHP Matt Strahm raising the 40-man total to 40 players.

12/08/2022

Phillies signed free agent SS Trea Turner raising the 40-man total to 39 players.

12/07/2022

Phillies claimed RHP Noah Song off waivers from Boston in the major league portion of the Rule 5 Draft.  He is serving in the Navy and will be placed on a Military List until his service commitment is completed or he is reassigned as a reservist.  He won’t count against the 40-man roster.

Prior to submitting rosters for the Rule 5 Draft, the Phillies had 16 players on their Triple-A roster.  When the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft was held this week, the Phillies had 31 players on their Triple-A roster.  That meant that they added 15 players whose names we didn’t know (but could make reasonable guesses) and that they had 7 vacancies that they could fill if they chose.

The Phillies did claim 7 players –  SS Pedro Martinez off waivers from Bowling Green (TB), C Cody Roberts off waivers from Bowie (BAL), RHP Yoniel Ramirez off waivers from San Jose (SF), SS Cam Cannon off waivers from Worcester (BOS), RHP Trey Cobb off waivers from Syracuse (NYM), 2B Oliver Dunn off waivers from Somerset (NYY), and RHP Zach Linginfelter off waivers from Rocket City (LAA).

The Phillies lost 5 players – Omaha (KC) claimed SS Shervyen Newton, Louisville (CIN) claimed RHP Kyle Glogoski, Oklahoma City (LAD) claimed RHP Carlo Reyes, Iowa (CHC) claimed CF Jefferson Encarnacion, and Sugar Land (HOU) claimed RHP Manuel Urias.

12/02/2022

Phillies signed free agent SS Shervyen Newton to a minor league contract and assigned him to Reading (on 11/23/2022).

11/16/2022

Phillies signed free agent C John Hicks to a minor league contract and assigned him to Reading.

11/15/2022

    1. Cave was arbitration-eligible this offseason, but the Orioles signed him to a split Major League contract for the 2023 season. The contract has different rates of pay for time in the Majors and time in Triple-A. The idea was to make Cave less attractive to other teams when the Orioles tried to outright him off their 40-man roster. The higher rate for Triple-A was meant to encourage Cave to accept the outright assignment. Cave had been outrighted before and has the right to decline an outright assignment. But, if he were to decline the outright assignment, he would become a free agent and have to negotiate a new contract. He’d likely not be able to negotiate the favorable pay rates of his existing contract.

So, if Cave were to pass through waivers, there is no need to negotiate a new contract. He would just accept the assignment.

  1. McArthur, Nittoli, Ortiz, Scott, are pitchers on the bubble IMO for when they sign players. Cave, Ortiz, and Muzzotti are the position players on the bubble. Trades are another way to open up spots. I do believe the Phils want to keep all of these players but if pressed to make a decision these are the most likely.

    1. Since Thomson specifically had mentioned Cave’s name earlier this week in San Diego when talking to MLB network guys about coping with Harper’s abscence in the OF and also at the plate….I tend to think he favors in keeping him around for awhile. I guess he is familiar with him from his Yankee days.

  2. Noah Song’s story is another example of why following minor league prospects is so much fun. Last year it was fun to watch Mark Appel finally reach the majors.

Who knows about Song. Has he commented on being selected by Dave D again? Any comment on his intentions after his naval commitment is finished?

Regardless of outcome, this seems to be a smart move by Dave D. Low risk. High reward.

  3. Willie, he has applied to be given permission to finish his commitment as a Naval Reserve, and therefore be able to play baseball. A decision has not been given as of yet.
