Threshers Recap – 6/5/2019

Box Score Recap

Knowing the Threshers history in Wednesday afternoon games, I went to the Complex to watch an intrasquad game.  I tweeted out these tidbits before the heat got to me.  I don’t know how I’m going to cover GCL games 6 days a week if I can’t take early June heat.

“RHP Starlyn Castillo displaying a 91-93 mph FB, 2 K in first inning.”  The Phillies’ top international prospect signing in 2018 looks good.  I wouldn’t be surprised if he is aggressively assigned to Williamsport.  You want a comp?  How about Francisco Morales with control.

“Lakewood’s Abrahan Gutierrez is getting some rehab innings behind the plate.”  I don’t know what his injury was, but he looks fine.

“Roman Quinn is running out at bats during an intrasquad game. He looks as fast as you remember.”  We all know that Quinn could re-injure himself taking off his spikes.  I’ve taken to adding #mrglass to tweets updating his progress.  Seriously, I haven’t seen Quinn play the field yet.  He’s just batting first or second every half inning of intrasquad games until he gets 4-6 at bats.  Until today, I hadn’t seen him run after putting a ball in play.

Clearwater (31-28) was 3-hit by Jupiter, and lost 1-0.

This was a well-pitched game by both sides.  Julian Garcia gave up 4 hits, 1 earned run on a solo HR in the third inning, and walked three.  He struck out six.  Zach Warren (4.07) followed with two perfect innings, striking out three.  Grant Dyer (0.68) pitched one inning, gave up one hit, and struck out two.

In seasons dating back to 2012, I have seen the Threshers offense fail in these Wednesday afternoon games.  I once sat through a double header where they managed just one hit.  Total.  So, it’s never a surprise to me when they get checked like this.

The Threshers only collected two singles Wednesday.  They were no-hit until Ben Aklinski’s two-out single in the fifth inning.  Nick Maton had the other hit, a lead off single in the eighth.  The only other base runners came on two walks.  Of their four base runners, two were erased on failed steal attempts.  Simon Muzziotti did steal second base successfully, and was the Threshers only base runner to reach scoring position.  The Threshers went 0-2 while he was there.

Lehigh Valley (28-28) lost to Pawtucket, 13-2.

Five IronPigs pitchers got jacked up, giving up 11 runs and allowing 3 of 4 inherited runners to score.  So, Jose Antequera was called on to finish up.  He gave up 2 runs.

Starter Enyel De Los Santos gave up a run in 3.2 innings.  Josh Tols (7.71) gave up a run in 1.1 innings and also allowed an inherited runner to score.  Josh Martin (6.00) stunk, giving up 5 runs without getting an out.  Kyle Dohy gave up a run in two innings and saw his inflated ERA go down.  He also allowed 2 of 3 inherited runners to score.  And, Luke Leftwich (15.75) had another rough AAA outing, giving up 3 runs in one inning before giving way to Antequera.

The Pigs kept it close with a run in the fifth inning on Andrew Romine’s RBI single that made the score 2-1.  They didn’t score again until the bottom of the ninth on a force out.

Lehigh had 10 hits, but went 1-7 with runners in scoring position.

Rob Brantly (.307) went 4-4.  Andrew Romine (.285) and Malquin Canelo (.251) had 2 hits each.

Jan Hernandez came off the IL and went 0-4.

Reading (31-24) lost to Akron, 2-0.

Mauricio Llovera pitched a solid six innings.  He gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks.  He struck out eight.  Jake Hernandez (2.40) struck out two in two perfect innings.

Reading had 5 hits and went 0-7 with RISP.

Lakewood (21-37)  beat Hagerstown, 3-0.

Two Lakewood pitchers combined to 2-hit the Suns.  Kyle Glogoski (0.76) pitched five shutout innings allowing 2 hits, walking none, and striking out six.  Tyler McKay (2-3, 4.95) walked one in four no-hit,shutout innings, striking out two.

The Suns’ pitchers pitched equally well, almost.  They pitched perfect until they hit a batter, Rafael Marchan, with one out in the fourth inning.  He was wiped out on a double play.  They got their first hit with two out in he fifth, a Carlos De La Cruz single.

The BlueClaws scored in the sixth inning on Rafael Marchan’s RBI single.  They scored 2 runs in the seventh on RBI triples by Carlos De La Cruz and Yerwin Trejo.

The BlueClaws managed just 2 hits.  Carlos De La Cruz (.226) went 2-3 with a triple and RBI.

  1. Great news on Castillo since we’re going to need him to be great.
    Glogoski is the only positive from yesterday’s games. He’ll need to go to Cwater soon, he’s too good for Lakewood level. Very encouraging
    I know it’s not the right place but, congrats to Haseley!

    1. I really think Garcia can be a very good player and seems to have a good skill set. Having said that, I worry that his Lakewood misadventures will damage his confidence and hop he goes down to Williamsport where I feel he’ll rake.

  2. Grant Dyer could be a sleeper. At the very least he’s bound to see a promotion here in the near future. The young man’s WHIP and K/9 figures since becoming a pro screamed backend BP arm.

    Then he goes down for TJ misses all of 2017 and struggles in 2018 coming back off the surgery. Now he’s back to his old form .722 WHIP and 9.6 K/9

    Seems like they pulled Enyel early wonder if that means he is getting called back up.

    1. Re: Enyel – I saw a tweet that indicated he might be on a pitch count. 66 pitches was the most he had thrown since April 18th with all the yoyo-ing back and forth from pen to short starts to the Phillies. Just being careful with his arm.

        1. He skipped over Clearwater, so I didn’t get to see him play. He would have been an everyday starter there. But they needed a 4th outfielder in Reading. He’s made the most of his chances and is in the regular outfield rotation now that Haseley moved up.. So, yeah, he has a chance. Remember he was drafted the same year as Moniak, so Stephen is young for the league too.

          1. I use Hunter Bishop for making the case for patience with Josh Stephen. Stephen was actually ranked just ahead of Bishop (at least by Perfect Game) in the 2016 class. Stephen was the #5 OF in California, #14 overall prep player in California, and #104 overall in the nation. Bishop was the #6 OF in California, #15 overall prep player in California, and #106 overall in the nation.
            Bishop went to school, and was slow to develop. It wasn’t until this season that Bishop became a serious prospect. I’m not predicting similar success for Stephen. I’m just saying there is precedent for a breakout.

    2. @DMAR – Dyer is projected to be a fast riser and a back end pen arm. He is actually slower in his recovery (from surgery) than I expected. Considering he will be exposed to the Rule 5, Dyer should be pitching at least in AA.

    3. Indeed. Enyel had a 65-pitch limit last night. He was at 55 through three. He was up to 95 a few times but secondaries weren’t sharp and that didn’t allow him to be efficient. No hard contact off him at all.

    1. AFAIK, Temp inactive is just roster manipulation as he comes back from the majors and isn’t needed to pitch until Sunday. Nick Williams back in the lineup tonight for IronPigs, playing center field.

  4. Glogoski continues to excite me! He seems to keep getting better. A few more starts – and maybe get deeper into games – and he may get a new challenge at CW in July.

    McKay pitched well again. That’s two consecutive sterling appearances: 4 ip, 0 r, 0 h. He ended April with a 10.13 era and it’s now down to 4.95 era. I believe he has a mid 90s FB. I’m interested to see how he progresses.

  6. You guys gotta calm down on Glogoski. He wasn’t called up until May 1st. Injuries caused a domino effect among the pitching corps. At that time, Young went on the IL, and Eastman was promoted, leaving an opening at Lakewood.

    Glogoski has a nice low 90s FB that he keeps low in the zone. Can’t comment on other stuff,.

    But, he only threw 39 innings in the GCL last year. And he went to the ABL with a 25 inning inning limit. He’s already at 23.2 IP. He’s only made 2 starts and hasn’t thrown more than 66 pitches. He’s just 20, too.

    You can’t promote every kid with a good small sample. You gotta give them time to develop. And, you don’t have to worry about promotions. Bonifay comes from the Astros’ system. Aggressive development plans are the norm there. Most top prospects receive mid-year promotions in their system.

      1. Actually, I learned today his stuff touches 90-91, but he sits 89. And he doesn’t yet have a reliable off speed pitch. His FB has movement, and he varies speed down to 86 to keep batters off balance.

    2. Usually I agree with you about calming down about prospects in the low minors. But the video I saw of him showed very impressive stuff. I think we can be a little excited about this guy.

  7. I am confused about the 7 day IL. Can anyone explain that? Obviously the passing of 7 days does not seem to require any change of status since S Howard, for example, has (sadly)exceeded that by quite a bit.

    1. Think of it as a minimum required stint on the IL list. Putting someone on the 7-day IL allows the team to replace that spot on the roster. If after 7 days the player isn’t ready, he can stay there indefinitely.

  9. I’m officially on Kyle Glogoski watch now. However, i normally withhold judgment for prospects below A+. Glogoski is still 20 yo, so there’s no rush to promote him to CLW.

    Glogoski + Silva + Santos will be interesting to watch in LWD.

    1. Tim…think about it…… when he makes his MLB debut…the Phillies will be flying his parents in from New Zealand….that will be one long flight. Hopefully when that day comes the Phillies will be on the West Coast.
