Clearwater (26-15) Lost to Palm Beach, 9-6. The weak-hitting Cardinals pounded out 15 hits. They scored 3 runs off Tyler Viza in the first inning, and 6 by the end of the third. The light-hitting Cardinals padded their run total with 2 home runs off the Threshers’ bullpen. Meanwhile, the Threshers’ offense struggled to get base runners again against the Cardinals’ starting pitcher. They finally broke through with 4 runs in the seventh when they got 5 of their seven hits, but by then it was too late. The Threshers struck out 12 times, two times each for the batters in the 2 thru 6 holes – Sandberg, Tocci, Pullin, Walding, and Martin. Andrew Pullin hit his third home run in 11 games.
Will Morris was the first man out of the bullpen. Guess that means he’s the odd man out in the rotation with Shane Watson’s arrival. We’re still waiting for the companion transaction after his addition to the roster. Watson was in uniform and in the dugout Friday night. Heard talk on the press level that Cody Asche has already left Clearwater. Expect he’ll be continuing his rehab in either Reading or Lehigh.

The Threshers’ in game announcers, Kirsten Karbach (middle) and Josh Appel (left) present “Threshers on Deck”. In this episode they interview Temple’s Matt Hockenberry, learn the double play from Scott Kingery and Drew Stankiewicz, and provide a wrap up of the Threshers’ first month.
Kirsten was heard on the air during a Phillies’ spring training game when she sat in for Scott Franzkee and worked with LA. Josh just graduated USF and recently received the Jim Nantz Award from STAA as the nation’s most outstanding collegiate sports broadcaster for 2016.
And here’s a pregame interview with Threshers’ pitching coach, Aaron Fultz (on 5/16). He discusses Ulises Joaquin, Elniery Garcia, Ranfi Casimiro, and Tyler Viza.

Extra Innings –
- 5/21 – LHV activated Frank Herrmann fro the 7-day DL
- The Rosters are up to date here.
Not much to look at on this day. 2 rainouts and 2 losses doesn’t give a warm fuzzy feeling. Viza has his worst outing of the season but Will Morris came on to give CLW a strong 4 IP. Kilome had a pretty good outing with LKW and that make 4 good outings in a row for the 20 y/o.
Grenny Cumana, the tiny SS and second baseman, is playing pretty well. He’s only 20 and appears to be a solid fielder who, in his 2nd season at LKW, is hitting 30 points higher in AVG and he has a .302 OBP. At 5’5″ he makes Rollins look like a giant and he’s shown no ability to hit doubles, let alone HRs. He’s a nice little player, who will top out somewhere between LKW and CLW. I like to root for the underdog and Cumana certainly fits that bill.

That’s a .328 OBP for Cumana. He’s supposed to be very fast too. With any power at all he could be a real prospect, but that may not be in the cards for him.

Pullin in only 45 PAs since his return has 3 HRS and 3 doubles and 10 RBIs. Granted a SSS, but projected over a full season that is a lot of power production. Though his other part of the slash is below average. and his 18% K rate so far is a tick above average.

Romus,
Given that Reading only has four outfielders, I wonder if they’ll promote Pullin now that he’s back in playing shape so he can have the slot he wanted in the first place. And, certainly, if they promote Cozens, I’ve got to think Pullin is a Reading candidate.
If that happens, does Tromp finally move up in turn?

FrankF…I think they will promote him. And there could be a domino effect with Tromp or Tomscha from LKW

Notice there k/ 9 b/9 rate almost the same as Cozens. What Law said about home versus away. Anyone that seen Cozens hit a Hr knows his power plus CBP is a Hr park. The only park Cozens might have trouble hitting Hrs is Yellowstone.

Appel really in a funk lately.

I watched the beginning of the game, and Appel’s velocity was down. His fastball is usually 93-95 mph, but today it was 88-90 mph. Maybe he’s going thru a dead arm period? Or perhaps he’s pitching thru an injury.

dag54,,,he certainly is a mystery.
He is coming off 5 days rest….and I know it is damp and chilly up there today, but he is rested.Maybe this is some of the things the ‘Stros went thru.
The inconsistency, evidently, is the frustrating aspect of his career up until now..

Romus,- Yeah, I hear ya. The inconsistentcy is troubling, and he has struggled with command his whole professional career…To me, he’s a right handed throwing Jesse Biddle.
