He allowed one run on a home run.  Elvis Araujo blew the save and took the loss when he surrendered a 3-run home run in the eighth inning.  Both homers and all 4 RBIs were the work of Jake Fox, remember him?  Roman Quinn went 3 for 4 with a double and a triple.  Brock Stassi and Art Charles had 2 hits each.  Brian Pointer pitched in with a solo home run.

Clearwater dropped an 8-1 decision to Jupiter.  Colin Kleven gave up 7 of the runs on 11 hits.  The Threshers managed just 6 singles.  Dom Brown had 2 of them and their only RBI.

Lakewood defeated Greensboro 4-1 and raised their record to 3-2.  Chris Oliver outpitched Ben Holmes over 5 innings.  Yes, that Ben Holmes.  Oliver struck out 5 in his 5.0 IP.  Austin Davis (Hold) and Matt Hockenberry (Save) each pitched 1-hit ball in 4.0 innings of relief.  Jiandido Tromp went 3 for 3.  Malquin Canelo and Carlos Tocci had 2 hits each.  Tocci had 3 RBIs and Damek Tomscha added one.

  1. Tocci coming out of gate making statement. Would like to see few more extra base hits but lets be positive with him. I wonder what Franco numbers could look like without his april/may slow starts. The Phillies need Quinn to be top prospect and so far so good.

  2. My father and I have said the same thing the last two days. Is Altherr hurt? If Tocci stays on this pace through May 5th-10th he will force a promotion to Clearwater without a doubt. Reading’s rotation as advertised thus far, despite a minor hiccup with Nola but snow had a lot to do with that. Believe it or not I am just as excited to see/hear Lively throw as any of the others.

  3. To me, it’s pretty clear that Roman Quinn, who has nearly 80 speed and obviously has a good arm is going to be dangerous on the bases and is going to be a solid fielder at least. The question is whether he’s going to get on base and hit with some pop. The early returns couldn’t be better – if what we are seeing now is a preview of coming attractions, he’s going to be soaring through the prospect rankings very quickly and making his way to Philadelphia. He’s a very exciting prospect.

    1. Yeah, he’s my pick for breakout player this year. I think he’s overall quite undervalued by the prospect-watching community.

  4. I love Quinn, and I am hoping that what we are seeing early continues. He could be a really nice CF for the Phils, and he seems to have baseball instincts.

    1. Maybe Ruben’s insistence on trying to get Mookie Betts from the Sox in a Hamels deal, is a moot point, when it comes to Roman Quinn.

      1. Flashback in time to Ender Inciarte’s time with Phils as a Rule 5 guy. Was never given an opportunity to remotely show future potential. He is a solid regular for Arizona now and can fill the box score up in multiple ways. He also plays with fire in his belly. Whether it be player development, player evaluation, or overall knowledge, the Phillies brass have absolutely no clue. They have missed at an above average rate via the draft, extensions, etc. Michael Martinez stuck for 162, yet Inciarte could not after how many AB’s? 15-20?

        1. LOL. Everyone hated the fact that Inciarte made the squad. Hindsight is one heck of a thing to have.

        2. I think I Get your point, its not that they go rid of him, its more the way they evacuate talent.

  5. Why are we dwelling on Ender Inciarte and Michael Martinez right now when we have a solid Rule 5 centerfielder with an above average bat (that cost us only 50K) and we have prospects top to bottom that are impressing? Has Ruben screwed this team up in the past? Of course but, in the last few months he and the front office have made great strides to learn from those mistakes. In no way am I defending RAJ but merely trying to point out that A) this is a box score post not a general discussion and B) lets talk current Phillies prospects and be excited about them rather than complain about past decisions made by the front office that can’t be undone. It’s time to move on and be a little glass half full about the slight uptick in the direction that the Phillies are going with this “rebuild”.

    1. Evan I sincerely apologize. I didn’t realize that I cannot post anything on the past, or Phillies banter in general, on a simple box score post. And you’re right, the “slight uptick” in the systems overloaded talent pool of prospects has me really pumped up. We will have so many position player big league regulars with the guys on the farm right now we will be set through 2025! Ender Inciarte is and will be a better MLB regular than Herrera. I also want to apologize for knocking over my half full glass of Phillies water onto my key board.

      1. TRiles you have to realize, the Phillies have gotten a few young pitchers, and all is forgiven, A lot of guys on here watch this team with blinders on, Its like your wife cheating on you for years, now she tells you I wont do it again, and cooks you a nice dinner ,Would you trust her.? I WOULDNT and until amaro is gone, and Middleton gets control, and gets the devil bill Giles and David Montgomery out of those offices or at least strips them of any say, in other words buys them out, I don’t trust them and the way they judge talent.

        1. Also, your dwelling on Amaro, Montgomery and even Bill Giles is concerning. Maybe you should start a website dedicated to them since that’s all you talk about.

  6. Has Tocci gained anymore weight this off season? I am glad they let him start in Lakewood. He is still young no need to rush him.

    1. I believe the reports from those who were at spring training were that Tocci has more muscle on his arms and legs but did not fill out in the chest much. He gained weight but not as much as the organization had hoped he would.

      1. Thanks for the heads up. He still has time to grow he is still young for his league.
As far as rule 5 goes is this his last year before they have to protect him ?

        Like

        1. He has gain around 15lbs (per his manager) also you don’t have to worry about Rule 5 for Tocci, there is ZERO CHANCE that he isn’t protected, moot point.

        2. Tocci signed his first minor league contract on his 16th birthday, August 23, 2011. Per MLR 5(c) since he was under the age of 18 on the June 5th immediately preceding this signing, he will be subject to the fifth Rule 5 Selection Meeting that follows the signing date of his contract. That would make him eligible after this season.

      1. Aumont should study Aaron Harang’s mechanics and take a book from him.
Both tall and harang in his younger days was as thin as Aumont.
As for Aumont, not sure about gaining 70 lbs or so, but study Harang’s smooth less-moving parts, and stand straight-up delivery.

    1. To summarize:

While with LA, his FB sat 88-93. First 3 innings of game, he sat 92-95 and back to 88-93 for last 3 innings.

Throws both 2 seam and 4 seam FB, but stuck only with 4 seam as it has lots of movement, both in and out (he seems to say it does what it wants but he has good control anyway)

Phillies have been working with him to incorporate lower body more and he says it feels comfortable to him … this is to get him both more velocity and more deception

      1. A lefty with a 92-95 FB with deception is a potentially very dangerous weapon. We might be talking about the 2015 Reading rotation for years to come. It’s not often you get such a deep 1-5 in AA or AAA ball – it’s the one thing that gets me most psyched about the team.

  7. My big things of the night: I hate it when Franco doesn’t play, I love seeing Quinn getting 2b and 3B because his speed is making things happen, I loved seeing Tromp get 3 hits finally, I loved seing Windle and Oliver pitch very well, and I loved seeing Tocci stay productive. I would like to see more offense from the CWater lineup but I have a hunch that the FCL pitching is good this year.

  8. I just want to say that Windle did not pitch *that* well unless those 9 hits were not hit hard. If someone has knowledge of how hard hit Windle was I would like to know. He gave up two HRs and two doubles. It seems to me from looking at the box score he might have gotten lucky to not allow more runs.

Thinking about pitching in general, I have to think the bar has been raised in terms of strikeouts and ERA. At least at the major league level, strikeouts are up and run scoring is down. My guess is that we should evaluate minor leaguers the same way, i.e. a strikeout per inning now is not the same strong indicator of success it was five to ten years ago. Am I wrong about this? Has run scoring and strikeouts in the minors not trended the same way as in the majors?

    1. Pat Gillick mentioned the other day he may request the rules committee amend the height of the mound and lower it, so hitters are not at such a disadvantage and hitting and run scoring picks up.

  9. Love Quinn! Lively pitched well also. Very excited about the Reading team. It is a shame about the 2 Blown Saves.

  10. Franco with 1st dinger of year. Quinn with 3 more hits. Tocci with grand salami. This is going to be fun year to watch.

          1. Even Kilome was surprised when told he hit 97. “As high as 97” might lead people to think that is the upper limit of his range, which is unreasonable until he shows he can reach that consistently. He is young, and he may get there. I believe the scout who reported that he “touched” 97 was Josh Norris.

            Like

            1. When someone touches a certain velocity they have now “touched -insert MPH-“. One of my pitchers hit 96 in a showcase tournament game where he came into close. He was being looked at as a SP and when the draft came around his scouting report read “sits 90-91 and his touched 96” obviously 96 wasn’t a normal occurrence but it gives people an idea of what he’s capable of touching.
