Ruben Amaro’s Page on Baseball Reference Punk’d

If you haven’t seen this yet, you should check out the Baseball Reference  page for RAJ.

Apparently, somebody at Beerleaguer sponsored his page and the following ad appears in a yellow panel across the screen.

“RAJ’s friends at Beerleaguer sponsor(s) this page.

BRef wanted $15 to sponsor this page, but in Ruben’s honor I ponied up $75 on a three year deal with a vesting option. 2015 can’t come soon enough!”

If you use an ad blocker, disable it before going to the page.  Here’s the link.

  1. Thanks for the Thankgiving chuckle.

If you look at his minor league stats, and choose to ignore his age relative to his competition, his numbers – for some years at least – looked really good.

  2. Come on, this is worth a good chuckle. Not mean spirited or ad hominem, just something close enough to the truth to be funny.

  3. So…just what is “the truth”? Amaro may have been a medoicre MLB player at best. What does that mean concerning him as a GM? Not much. If it does tell us something about his competency as a GM…please describe what it tells us in that regard.

    1. But the joke is about RAJ the GM, not RAJ the player. Seems like harmless fun. He actually had two quite decent seasons as a bench guy for the Phillies, one of which was the 1993 WS team, although he only had 58 PA, he helped that team.

    2. I don’t know the intention of the person who put the “ad” on Amaro’s player page on BR, but the content of the “ad” was a jibe at his perceived habit of overpaying and tacking on an option year on some recent contracts. These option years have been a cause for great angst for a lot of commenters on this site. The option years, along with some overvaluation of their players, are seen as the reason that the Phillies aren’t able to move players during trade periods. The particular wording of this “ad” reminds me of the Byrd contract, where an $800K FA got $8M/year for 2 years PLUS an option year. The “ad” may have been mean-spirited in its intention, but I thought it was clever and humorous. I shared it because a lot of commenters here are anti-Amaro, and I thought they would get a chuckle out of it, at a time when it might be needed after Tomas signed with Arizona. I, on the other hand am probably an Amaro apologist. But that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate something like this.
