The disaster that is 2014 continues for Jesse Biddle with multiple media outlets reporting that Biddle has left his Winter Ball team in Puerto Rico and returned to Philadelphia after experiencing soreness in his left elbow. Biddle was 0-1 with a 15.19 ERA in his 2 appearances. He will undergo an MRI and be examined by Phillies physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti.

Who makes a major league start first; Biddle, Morgan, or neither? What a bummer.

Man, this kid Biddle cannot catch a break. I’m glad it’s the elbow and not the shoulder, but this is tough on him. It reminds me of the part of This is Spinal Tap where they talk about one of the former drummers dying in “a bizarre gardening accident.”

Or Mike Edward’s of ELO dying from a bale of hay. “Edwards was killed on the A381 road between Harbertonford and Halwell near where he lived in Totnes in Devon, on 3 September 2010, when a cylindrical hay bale weighing 1,300 pounds (590 kg) rolled down a hillside and collided with the van he was driving A court case concluding on 19 November 2012 resulted in two defendants being found not guilty of health and safety charges relating to the accident.”

“No, he choked on someone else’s vomit and died”

It seems the Phillies can’t catch a break with these young pitchers lately. If Biddle and Morgan could have stayed healthy and continued to develop; then they probably would have been with the big team by now.

Ruf sent home from Winter Ball, hitting .167. RAJ said he never got going after getting HBP. When does the good news start?

The Phils better have at least 4 plans for 1B. Plan A is Ruf. Plan B is Franco. Plan C Howard and Plan D?

There is no need for a Plan D. The Phillies aren’t going to be contenders in 2015, they might not even win more than 70 games. There is no need to find a good solution to every hole for 2015. That is a problem to be addressed for 2017, possibly for 2016. Now is the time for trying on possible solutions. Hopefully we are not going with Plan C. I’d say plan A for the first half of the year and Plan B for the rest of the season, if Plan A fails. Neither of these plans is good for much beyond 2015/16 — I doubt Ruf has it in him to be a plus MLB 1B and Franco belongs at 3B longer term. Going with Plan A/B allows us to get a much better handle of what we have in Asche, Ruf, and Franco. In a pinch, I guess Plan D is to make sure we have a good AAAA 1B, and I don’t think Murphy is that guy, stashed at Allentown. I don’t care much about the 20154 W – L record, but if we get to Plan D, that says we have a problem beyond 2015.

Ruben said today he believes Biddle’s elbow issue does not appear to be serious.
I hope he is correct.
Ruf was hit by a pitch and incurred a minor bruising.
Ruben says:
” He actually got hit by a pitch and I think he either went on the DL or missed a lot of time. He was hit in the triceps and he was not able to play for a while and I think they decided, ‘You know what, we’re going to get another player.’ That’s what happens.”

Let’s make certain the guy is really healthy, before he’s sent out to the mound again. His elbow shouldn’t just be treated as the latest injury/illness that the Phillies stupidly ask Biddle to suck it up and pitch through. Their treatment of him to-date has been more than slightly bizarre.

What is bizarre, in this day and age, is getting whooping cough at 22-years old and getting a concussed injury from a hailstorm a year later.
That, those two things occurred is not a common occurrence.

Whooping cough makes absolutely no sense, but it happened, soooo
The hailstorm I can’t comment on, since I’ve never actually been hit by hail, but it’s still more logical than getting whooping cough.

As I’ve been saying for a year now, Biddle will likely be a LOOGY. Injuries will only expedite that reality, along with his lack of control. It’s unfortunate but it’s reality .

I don’t see him as a bullpen piece at all. From my perspective, he either makes it as a starter (somewhere in the rotation – nobody quite knows where right now), or he’s going to have a nomadic AAAA existence like Joe Savery where he doesn’t quite fit in anywhere and he struggles to make a go of it as a major leaguer.

Despite these nagging injuries, Biddle’s biggest challenge to overcome is in his head.

Are there still fragments of that giant hailstone in there?

I think PhuturePhillies website is responsible for Biddle’s failures…the jinx factor.
Once Matt Winks changed the logo at the top of the page in 2013 and put Biddle’s pix on the far right, things began going turn hill for him. 🙂

So, in case Biddle’s elbow wasn’t enough bad news, Shane Watson is having another shoulder surgery.
