Tyson Gillies went 2-4 with his first homer of the season, while Phillippe Aumont worked a clean inning with two Ks. Take that, Second Cliff Lee Trade Haters!
Cesar Hernandez, Zach Collier, Cameron Perkins and Tommy Joseph each had two hits – Perkins also drew two walks – he’s hit safely in eight straight games, include six multi-hit games and six extra base hits. He’s warm. Good line from Severino Gonzalez in a losing effort – 3R, 6H, 1HR, 0BB, 5K in 6IP, with a good strike rate of ~67%.
Brian Pointer and Aaron Altherr both drew a pair of walks, while Ethan Stewart was the star for CLR – 2R, 1ER, on 5H, 1HR, 1BB and 7K in 7IP. I’d love to see him do that a couple more times. Samuel Hiciano‘s having a fair start to his 2014 – his OBP is at .400, and his K Rate is around 21%. Not bad, if he can keep both going.

I was more surprised by the Aumont clean inning. I expected the 4-3 Railriders lead to turn into a blowout.
Franco didn’t look too bad tonight. He had some good contact…it just went right to the fielders. First one was a grounder that went straight to the 3rd baseman. In a later AB, it was hit right to the glove of the guy on 2nd.
Granted, it was only a few AB’s (and I should be able to see him tomorrow & Monday), so it’s impossible to say anything for certain, but I don’t think we need to start beating the crap out of the panic button on him just yet.

No panic here. I thought he needed 30 games or so at Reading before he moved up. He has some things to work on. He identified these things in ST. So just let him learn on the fly.

Zach Green is showing some signs of life. If you look at his .186 average, you might ask why. In his last 4 games, he’s hitting .400 with a .500 OBP. The power hasn’t shown up yet but the Lakewood ballpark will sap that power right out of you. I’d like to see more doubles but you have the get base hits first. They’re starting to show up so maybe some 2B will also. In his extreme short season stats, he’s showing a lot less Ks and a few more BBs. In 2012 his K to PA ratio was 23%. In 2013 it was 29% but so far this year it’s 18%. His BB / PA ratio is 11% this year and it was 10% last year. Maybe it’s a trend, maybe an anomaly. Stay tuned…

1 HR for all minor league teams. That won’t cut it. Power is only thing that could potentially change the unpleasant trajectory of Phillies system. I will give it one more month but if we don’t see significant shift in power numbers….u better start scouting what prospects the phillies can get for Lee.

It is a sad and telling thing with the big club, when Nardu and philly.com starts doing prospect’s lists in April.

lmao if i believe what is posted on here by many. The phillies will stay like this for three years waiting for contracts to expire. So all we have to do is hope a prospects does do good. I personally am watching reruns of deadwood, and the pacific, i really cant watch how bad this team is,and no hope to get better. The comcast money means nothing I guess, because they wont go over the cap to fix any problems. I thought maybe they would fire amaro but that seems not to be the case, so hopefully perkins or biddle gets a good season under there belt and we get to watch them next season.

To be frank roccom.
Ruben may just step down down later in the year if things do not turn around.
He may get too weary from all the criticism coming from every media direction and just concentrate on the upper management side of the operations.
Isn’t he also the Senior VP of Operations along with the GM?.

I hope your right romus. Love to see them go outside the organization and get a proven winner, like before with Gillick.Who that person is i have no idea, but need a guy who can build a team, this bullpen still is bad, even with a draft of college arms for the bullpen, and Amaro spending on pap, adams ,durbin,

When is the last time any manager or gm ‘stepped down’ who wasn’t close to retirement age? Walking away is like an open admission to incompetency- who would do that and screw their professional reputation and leave a paycheck? Quitting is worse than losing. That scenario isn’t realistic.

Matt what is your opinion on Cesar Hernandez .I have seen him about 12 or 15 abats not a lot, he looks like a wild swinger, do you see him as a starting player for a good team in future?

I don’t believe in the hit tool and power enough to think his ceiling is higher than a second division second baseman, and I don’t value that very highly. That being said, if he can play an above average 2B while faking SS, 3B, and the outfield, that is a player I want on my bench if I am a major league club.

Matt, I know you probably answered this somewhere else, but when will draft posts start?

Matt, about the draft: What do you think of Sean Newcomb from U of Hartford? The scouts are flocking to see him. He’s a 6’5″ 240 Jr with a 95 Mph fastball. He’s up here in my neck of the woods and I’m trying to get over to see him. He was soaring along with a 0.00 ERA and then hit a couple of bumps. He had 2 games in a row where he allowed 4 runs in each game. He came back with a 7 inning shutout since. He throws a ton of BBs (4.2 per 9 IP) but his K rate is 9.9 per 9 IP). If I get to see him, I’ll report back.

From what I have heard he seems to be in that tier below where the Phillies are picking. I expect him to go to a playoff contending team in the draft and in 6 months we are asking how he fell. I don’t see enough to take him at 7, but he is certainly a legitimate draft prospect and I would encourage you to see him if you have the chance.
