Box Score Recap – 4/12/2014

Not much to say about the LV double header. Maikel Franco lowered his BA to .108 after an 0-6 on the day, and he added two strikeouts. Cesar Hernandez playing 3B all day for a Reading double dip, as Cameron Perkins collected five hits, including two doubles and a triple, and Perci Garner made a good showing – 2R/5H/1BB/5K in 5IP. Just over 2/3 of his pitches were strikes and he induced six groundball outs. Ken Giles got five outs and only two were Ks. Unacceptable.

Cole Hamels pitched well in his rehab start for CLR (insert “old for the league” joke here), while Tyson Gillies had a pair of hits. Brian Pointer has seven hits in his seven games. J.P. Crawford had two hits for Lakewood, and Ranfi Casimiro did not have a great day – 5R/3ER/4H/1HR/2BB/3K in 2.2IP.

  1. Perkins and Astudillo have the eye for hitting and making contact.
And Giles continues his superb pitching.

  2. Perkins is even playing some CF now. It seems he plays all over on D. He played all 3 OF spots in minors and 1st. Does anyone know how good he is defensively? Could he be Mayberrys replacement next year as 4th outfielder?

    1. For sure , Perkins covers all the corners.
At Purdue he was a 3rd baseman, but he seems to handle the corners OF and INF positions rather well from what has been written.
As for CF, now that would be interesting if he can handle that.

    2. Even if he could, I doubt they would put him in that role as soon as next year. He’s probably another guy who would be better served getting ABs in AAA (next year) than sitting on the bench in the majors.

    1. I don’t believe I have heard that Quinn has appeared in an extended spring game yet, so that could be a while. I think when he was first injured, we all assumed it would be Mid-July or August if at all, but there was talk of him being ahead of schedule.

Knapp is hitting, I think, in extended spring already. Mid-year is my best recollection of when we all figured based on normal recovery time that he might be catching again.

Watson I could not say. Anyone know if he’s started his throwing program yet?

      1. Quinn is still hoping for a mid-season return but the Achilles is not something to mess with. Matt Eddy writing for Baseball America said Watson could be back in August but things have to break right for him. I also heard Knapp was hitting and could come back as a DH. Catching will be further away because he won’t be throwing for a while.

    2. Out if the 3 I’d expect Knapp back first. He could be back as a DH soon. The other I have no idea. Wouldn’t surprise me if we didnt see them at all this year.

      1. have you seen him play? He looks like a bowling ball out there and has almost zero chance of being legit prospect.

          1. At what they say is 5’9″ and a generous 200 plus pounds…I guess that qualifies as a bowling-ball, fire-plug or whatever.

            1. I saw Kirby play and Astudillo has about 10% of his athleticism. Kirby could actually run and was powerful guy. He was rare for his body type.

    1. I’m not sure if this means anything but the organization must have some confidence in Simon if they chose to demote Nesseth instead of Simon. (Or am I over-thinking this?)

      1. Overthinking. Nesseth really couldn’t handle the hitters. I’m not sure he can do it at Reading either. Simon is exasperating, but he has a sinking fastball and I don’t think they want to give up on him.

  3. Astudillo seems like the 3rd baseman of the Giants…who also can hit. A guy whose bat rarely misses the ball should somehow get a position to play. At least a DH if he can add some power along the way.

  4. Looking ahead to the draft, I have a special interest in this one since one of my high school students is quite possibly going to be drafted. He is pitching today and numerous scouts (including the Phils) will be in attendance. He is a lefty and has been all-state since his freshman year. It would be amazing if the Phils picked him and he signed. He is committed to Wake Forest at this point.
