Box Score Recap 8-10-2012

Pettibone getting it done.  Couple too many walks, not enough Ks, but only 2 hits and 15 ground outs.  Solid.  And Sebastian Valle with his 2nd AAA homerun – his ISO at Lehigh Valley is .273.  Massive.

  1. Kleven with a good outing. Continues with his incnosistency. JDT has been pretty darn good in the GCL. Over his last 28 1/3 innings he has a 2.54 ERA with 24Ks & 8 BBs but he’s the unluckiest guy (0-4). Lakewood can’t play without Duffy.

      1. It hasn’t worked out, but I think was fair to give a guy hitting .384/.466/.620 after 60 games a shot at some more advanced competition.

        1. understand your point, but I believe him to be just an organization guy. I think he had such a positive impact on the kids in lakewood. I think he should have stayed there.

          1. That may be true but Franco has kept mashing and Dugan hit a dry stretch but has been better his last 10 games. They don’t seem to be missing him all that much.

  2. Pettibone with 15 ground outs and only 1 fly ball is impressive. He’ll need those type of lines to succeed in CBP.

  3. can cozens go to vsl .Or do they keep him in gcl for four or five years. think he needs to be at lower level.

      1. As a lifelong troll on other sites (try not to on this one because I appreciate what the guys running the site are doing for us), I don’t think it’s any better than trolling for you to assume other peoples motivations.

A troll is definitely trying to rile people up, but it’s rude to suggest you know why they’re doing it. When I do it, usually, it’s because it’s funny and I dislike the group of people I am trolling (another reason I don’t do it here), not because of some inadequacy on my part.

Basically, what I’m saying is that unless you’re a psychiatrist, I don’t think you have any business guessing the motivation of another human being. Its just as dickish as what the above anonymous was doing.

  4. Just scanning the box scores you realize how pitching heavy this system is. There is no position player that really has any project beyond solid regular outside of the ultra raw players in WPT and GCL. There are a couple of guys who you could see being regulars but no one you could build a line up around. However, the pitching seems to be everywhere, hopefully this team won’t have to pay anything outrageous to a mid to back end starter or to reliever for many years (develop pitching, buy hitting)

      1. +1 … his post All-Star break numbers (a statistically significant 186 AB) say it all: .317/.376/.486 with 6 HR. His OPS over the last 10 games is 1.008. His BB/K rates look good. This is a 19-year-old who is really starting to put it all together.

Also, while I’m not saying he will be an All-Star, there’s something about Asche that makes me think he’s going to be an above-average ML player. The Phils have aggressively challenged him since he was drafted and he seems to be up for it each time. I can see him doing this in the big leagues as well. Again, I don’t expect a star, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he wound up as a Chase Headley-type player.

        1. Somehow I hadn’t realized Franco’s post-ASB numbers were that good. That’s very encouraging, given his age. It’ll be interesting to see how he progresses next year in the pitching-friendly Florida State League.

  5. 2B and a BB for Asche and a hit and a walk for Franco. I think one of them is bound to be the solution at 3rd for the big club, maybe even both. If they both make it, is it possible for Asche to play 2nd?

    1. They tried Asche at 2nd last year for awhile. Could posibly be there down the road. I assume he would need to begin playing there this fall in the FIL however.

  6. Chances Pettibone gets a few starts in September?? I mean only if Ruben gets those pictures of himself cheating on his wife back from Kendrick……

    1. I think Cloyd will get a shot before Pettibone. Mainly because JP just got moved up. Though I am not a big fan of Cloyd (in that I do not think his stuff will translate), he does certainly deserve the next shot

      1. I see Tyler Cloyd and then I look at Kyle Loshe last night, and I ask, why not? Loshe was very mediocre in his MiLB days…WHIP 1.3, ERA-4plus. I even liked Lohse back 3/4 years ago with the Phillies as a back-of-the-end rotation guy.

    2. I don’t think it is out of the realm of possibilities, I believe he has to be protected on the 40 man roster so I could see them giving him the spot early and bringing him up after the LHV season is over, I think it is a long shot but the 40 man implications make it possible

  7. 4 IP, 3 runs, 2 BB, 0k for Gueller today. He’s been a bit of a disappointment in the GCL. Still early though.

    1. Strikeouts would be nice, but he is a bit raw as a pitcher. Based on the Phils minor league pitching philosophy, I’d imagine he is throwing 80%+ fastballs at this point. We will know more about him next year about where they assign him (IMHO, likely Lakewood based on past early-round pitchers).

      Like

    2. He is likely just building up arm strength working on fastball command as was said above. He isn’t as polished as someone like a Biddle was, healthy innings are all I expect from him. The real jump will come after FIL when they can make changes to mechanics if necessary as well as start working on refining pitches. If I remember the scouting reports correctly he was almost as prolific as a hitter so this is his first time focusing solely on pitching.

    3. It is just a tad too early to be disappointed in a draftees performance, IMO. Gueller is a raw pitcher, who was more of a position player in HS. He isn’t from California or Texas. It should take more time with him, Watson. Law thinks Gueller is the better prospect.

      Like

      1. Oh I’m by no means writing him off. Just wish the K’s were there. I’m reserving further judgement until next season when the coaching staff has had some time to work with him.

        Like

      2. Interesting about Law thinking Gueller is better. I saw an interview with a Phils’ scout a few days ago where he compared Watson to Zack Greinke, and said he has a major league curveball. Tough to beat that.

        1. KL almost always bets on the guy with the higher ceiling. Watson does have a very strong curve for his age, but I believe MG has a bigger FB (or at least a higher projection).

    2. Here’s my list:

Joseph (very young for his level, decent defensive skills, big power, some plate discipline – he’s a valuable guy these days)
Quinn (speed to burn, some plate discipline and some pop all at a key defensive position – has an enormous upside)
Franco (great since the break – lots of power and ability and he’s very young)
Walding (all based on scouting reports, which are superb)
Valle (just be he’s a catcher and has power and some defensive skills – still probably a borderline player, but who knows)
Gillies (I think IF he’s healthy, he’ll be at least a 2-3 WAR player and probably better)
Asche (will play major league ball – the question is how good will he be? Tireless worker, good overall skills and has a nice swing)
      Tocci (talent to dream on)
Hernandez (will be a major leaguer – if he can develop power and improve his plate discipline, he has the chance to be really good – at worst, he’s a supersub or lower level starter)
Cozens/Z. Green/Pullin (all very promising – Larry Greene is right after this group)

    1. A lot of young pitchers going today. Outside Gueller and Watson, Kevin Walter also got in two scoreless innings — his best pro outing.

  9. Bizarre. He’s been flat out awful most of the season, but I guess there wasn’t many other options available and they are more worried about rushing and damaging someone else.

    1. This could be used as a “final push” for Reading to get to the playoffs — much less chance of losing if you pitch someone else besides J-rod.

      Like

    2. I think the most likely reason is to free up another spot in the Reading rotation for a Biddle or Wright call up. That and they want to see as many players as possible to see who factors into the next few years and that means more aggressive prospect promotion and less minor league journeymen

      1. Keep in mind sometimes teams will make “Paper” moves while physically keeping the player at the same level before re-activating him a few days later when it’s his turn to pitch again. Not saying that’s the case here, but who knows. Mario Hollands did get returned to Reading today so maybe he slides into that rotation again.

        1. Michael Lore said JRod was not with the AAA club yet. Possible he is on the way, possible it’s just a paper move. Hollands coming back up doesn’t necessarily mean JRod is going out. I asked the Reading PR guy for clarification on Twitter and he hasn’t responded. If anyone spots anything like a JRod sighting in the AAA clubhouse, I will be sure to tweet it – follow me of you like. @bxe1234

      1. Saw in the paper today where Manuel said Kendrick is staying in the rotation. Think the A ball guys to AA is the more likely reason.

      2. I believe Manuel was quoted as saying Kendrick is next week’s starter. If so, another lackluster outing will undoubtedly compel mgmt to make a move.

        1. Went back and re-read what he said … wasn’t a very strong endorsement for Kendrick … the “I think”, “probably”, “good chance” and the “right now” certainly leave room for a different direction … boy, didn’t realize you could cover yourself so many ways with one comment!!!

          Kendrick in the rotation

Manuel indicated that righthander Kyle Kendrick is likely to remain a starter, despite two subpar starts since rejoining the rotation after last week’s trade of Joe Blanton.

In two starts covering 71/3 innings, Kendrick has allowed eight earned runs while walking three and striking out three.

“I think there is probably a good chance he will stay there for right now,” Manuel said.

          1. Yes I listened to the Weekly Charlie Manuel interview on Sirius XM and one of the hosts asked when Cloyd was going to be getting a chance and questioned leaving Kendrick in the rotation. I forget the exact response but it did kinda seem to me that Charlie had no clue when Cloyd would be up (although he seemed to think he would be up before the end of the year.)

    1. Agreed – great opportunity to try out Cloyd and Pettibone. Pettibone is flying a little under the radar, but I think he has a chance to be really good. In order to increase his trade value (Worley would probably be one of the first guys I would trade), it might be helpful for him to make a few solid starts before shutting him down. He’s looked pretty bad of late.
