General Discussion – Week of June 4, 2012

Dodgers are in Philly this week.  By OPS, Jerry Hairston is their hottest hitter over the last 7 games.  Don’t laugh.  Ty Wigginton is ours.

  1. Really looking forward to watching Kershaw pitch tomorrow, just as a baseball fan.

I’m kind of tired about hearing some of the local personalitites (like the ones on DNL… cough Barkhann cough) talking about how this stretch is a test for the Phillies.

I don’t think there are tests. They’re a .500 team if not slightly below without Howard, Utley, and Halladay… even Nix who’s our best weapon against righties outside of those two big boys. Until we get healthy, we won’t know what we have.

    1. I agree with you that the Nix injury is really hurting the phils. Pence is quietly having a pretty decent year. He projects to 39 hr, 102 rbi and 120 runs.

      1. The fact that he’s tracking nearly 40 HR and barely 100 RBI tells you everything you need to know about how many players on the big club are getting on base.

        1. Part of the problem is that Hunter is something like 2 hits in his last 32 trips with men in scoring position. If that number were 8 instead of two he would probably be on pace for 120 RBI this season.

        2. SIFPA is correct in noting Pence’s hitting with runners in scoring position. But it is true that the Phillies are getting their worst production (relative to the league) from the first and third spots in the order.

  2. Utley is starting a rehab assignment this week. Will it be at 2B or in LF? He’ll start in EST so we won’t be seeing him in any games for awhile.

    1. I’d imagine they’ll give him every opportunity to test his knees at 2B before moving him to the outfield. Unfortunately, I don’t think anybody in the organization has the stones to tell Chase to switch positions.

    2. I think he’s a 2nd and 1st baseman this year.

Once the season ends, the Phillies (Ruben, Dave, Charlie, Gillick probably) will talk with him about his future. Whether it’s at 2nd, 3rd, or LF.

      1. … just to add:

I don’t think one month is enough time to prepare to play another position. I think you need to give him the full off season and spring training.

        1. Just throwing it out there. The bunt down the third base line would be near impossible for him.

  3. I know hindsight is 20/20, but in thinking about how the team got to where it is, I always ask why we didn’t get Dan Haren instead of Oswalt? The Angels really stole him.

  4. When you consider that the Phillies’ two top-paid starters have spent significant time on the DL, the inconsistency on the back end of the rotation, the loss of their two most feared hitters, the failure of our most touted relief prospects (Aumont & DeFratus) to perform, the team’s top position prospect struggles in AAA, the star leadoff hitter’s OBP of .289, and the fact that HECTOR F-ING LUNA was batting cleanup yesterday … it’s pretty amazing this team is a game above .500 and only 3.5 out of first place in the NL’s toughest division.

Quick question: do we have any idea whatever happened to the Phillies’ end of the Ty Wigginton trade? It was a PTBNL or cash, according to original reports. My only theory about the delay is that the player the Rockies asked for is one of our 2011 draftees? Wonder who it might be?

      1. Not sure, and i can’t find it, by I think they settled on cash. Anyone else remember hearing that?

    1. Seems like every team has had tons of injuries so it’s hard to isolate that to the Phillies only.

  5. While the continued presence of Thome, Howard and Utley in Clearwater is bad news for the Phillies, I am pretty excited about the possibility that one night in the next few weeks, the Threshers may have a chance to run out a lineup with 1,078 career major league home runs. Some 20-year-old righthander is going to get a baptism of fire.

      1. Thome’s going to be in MLB by then. He’s going to DH the AL Games this week.

  6. Has anyone heard anything about Kevin Walter’s rehab? Any chance he gets started soon?

    1. I hope he’s joking about preferring Tocci over Harper …

Interesting that Larry Greene’s driving the ball to the opposite field. You’d think a big slugging kid would be pull happy.

  7. Don’t know if this was mentioned somewhere else, but Jorge Soler has been declared a free agent by mlb. I would love it if they signed him…not my money, but I don’t think the Phils will sign him because he may command a major league contract and the phils are trying to avoid the luxury tax. I have read that he could get 30 million over 5 yrs.

  8. I haven’t seen it posted here, but Jorge Soler was declared a free agent over the weekend. Discuss.

  9. at the phillies game saturday, howard was taking swings during bp and utley was shagging in right. chase seemed to be just fine as he was chasing fly balls but howard was swinging with what i would say was 30% effort.

  10. I wonder… could the Chase Utley to third base conversion be a possibility again? He’s always going to struggle with his throw but if he could be slightly below average defensively, he’d be fine.

He’s matured as a ballplayer since the last time they tried it.

  11. Holy Jerry Martin! Where the hell was Mayberry. JP has done better in LF than he ever did in center but I knew he hated fences why did Cholly. You know when thing are going wrong bad s.. will happen. So JP was up first next inning big deal.
I felt for Lee who made one exhausted pitch and couldn’t get a little help.
Ty is killing the team.. Time to make some kind of change. Thome, Nix or Martinez coming back will only make it worse//

  12. So Galvis – I like him, I was in favor of plugging him into second while Utley was out, and he has to some extent vindicated that decision.

But let’s be honest here – despite some surprising pop, he has been a horrible hitter over all. Compare him to Rollins, who everyone seems to agree is ready for the scrap heap. Rollins has a better BA, much better OBP, and only slightly worse SLG%. And IMO Rollins is likely to hit better for the rest of the season that he has so far, whereas Galvis, though certainly likely to improve as a hitter in future years, seems to me to be likely to end up about where he is this year.

And Rollins is still as good a fielder as Galvis, and a better base runner.

    1. Galvis mistakes overall maybe 1. Rollins maybe 25. the rest of the team about 111.
Larry give the freken kid a chance to adjust PLEASE
