  1. The pitching of Brummett this year has been outstanding. He actually shut down a good lineup last night to get his team out of a bases-loaded-no-out situation and pitch another inning. This is a very short time for this great pitching from him, but bears watching. Aaron Altherr has been hitting the ball well all year. He seems to be fulfilling his promise this season.

    1. I’d like to see Altherr with a higher walk rate, but he does seem to be getting more hits this year so hard to complain too much.

      According to firstinning.com, his BABIP is higher than in previous years without a change in his line drive rate. Hence he might be getting a tad lucky on batted balls. Then again his ground ball rate has declined.

      Anyway, it is still fairly early and it will all even out over the course of the season. All in, I’d rather see him doing what he’s doing now than what he did at LKW last year.

      1. Also, not to dwell too much on “intangibles,” but it can’t hurt a young player’s confidence, especially when repeating a level, to rack up a bunch of hits to start the year, even if some of them are merely finding the rights holes by chance.

      2. I saw an interview with him on line last week where he said he lifted really hard in the off season and is much stronger this year. He said he can tell when he hits the ball because its coming off the bat with much more power. This could be the new and improved Altherr.

  2. Aumont’s control issues (3 BB in 2/3 of an inning) are becoming troubling. The ERA of 6.00 isn’t pretty either. Hope he gets it figured out.

    And the Phils need to do Tyler Greene a favor and get him out of Lakewood before his confidence is totally shot, if it isn’t already. Three more Ks in three at-bats, and hitting .164. His K rate is amazing (in a bad way).

    1. IMO I would have informed him that once the Crosscutters start he will be playing there to finish this year, and just go out and have some fun the remaining 3 or so weeks at LKW before short-season ball begins.

    2. Aumont’s walk rate is definitely troubling but I wouldn’t read much into reliever ERA, especially this early in the year. Since relievers get so few innings, all it takes is one bad appearance and your ERA is shot for the next 2 months.

    3. The last three games for Greene reveal that he is completely overmatched and over his head in Lakewood. Last night he was 0 – 3 with a Hat Trick, on 4/30 he was 0 – 4 with 2 K’s & 3 Errors, and on 4/28 he was 0 – 5 with the Golden Sombrero. He is now batting .156 with 33 K’s in 64 AB’s with 7 Errors. Yikes!

  5. At the very least they need to give Tyler some games off and let him clear his head. 0-3 3 SO’s says he is clearly not seeing the ball….

    1. He probably has 3 weeks or so at LKW, then down to short-season at WLMSP….just tell him to go out and have fun these last 3 1/2 weeks and not worry about a thing.

  6. Is there any way to find out how Roman Quinn and Larry Greene are doing? Are they in extended spring training? Will they be in Williamsport later this year?

  7. I think that a tactical error was made by the Phillies in the game last night when they decided to use Schwimer instead of Sanches in that eighth inning. Sanches has much more experience and should have been used in that spot since it was a difficult situation to come into the game with the bases loaded and only one out with a three run lead.

    2. Hindsight is 20/20, but the bigger mistake (and I said this during the game, too) was letting Paps warm the bench YET AGAIN in high leverage situations just because it wasn’t a save situation. That being said, this is the wrong place for this conversation.

      On topic: does anyone dispute Diekman is the most deserving ‘pen pitcher to get called up assuming he sees regular time with the big club?

      1. Yes. Unless they need a super utility type pitcher in which case Raul Valdes becomes a good option. (A pitcher who can spot start, long relief, short relief or loogy from day to day.)

  8. BA had a draft chat yesterday where one of the questions was on toolsy athletes that would fit the Phils mold. It made me think about some of the ones that got away over the past few years.

    Jeff Gelalich (2009 draftee) is a junior and tearing it up for UCLA. I don’t see his name come up all that often in discussions of draft prospects. It will be interesting to see where he gets drafted.

    Jake Stewart (2009 draftee) is not doing as well as Gelalich but is also not as bad as he was in previous years. Maybe we can get a second bite at the apple!! 😉

    Daniel Palka is a sophmore and showing good pop at GA Tech. I’m still sad we didn’t get him.

    Scott Frazier (sophomore) looks ok, not great at Pepperdine.

    Brenton Allen (sophomore) is hardly playing at all at UCLA.

    A former personal favorite, Damek Tomscha, is crushing it at an Iowa junior college and is going to Auburn next year.

    Tyler Ross (sophomore) is doing very well at the plate and is the starting catcher at LSU.

    Ryan Garvey left USC and played this year at Riverside City College. His numbers look unremarkable there.

    Riley Moore is having a good freshman season at AZ.

    Brendon Hayden is doing very well at VT hitting .352 but does not seem to be pitching that much.

    Scott Tomasetti is struggling at UNLV in his freshman year.

    I’m sure you were all fascinated to know this.

    6. Love the follow up information of the guys that got away. We heard so much about them and talked a lot about how much we should give them in bonus $$$ etc. The more I follow the draft and the minors, the more it becomes apparent that the percentage return on these guys is so slim. When you get a nugget of gold, you should praise the Baseball Gods. We were spoiled by the Utley, Howard, Hamels, Rollins, Ruiz stretch. Many erroneously believe that is the norm.

  10. Can I just mention Susdorf’s name? I still think he’s the best pure hitter in the organization and that includes Brown. Last year, I would have thrown Singleton into that mix. Unfortunately, Susdorf doesn’t really have a position or a whole lot of HR power. His bat would play very well at 2B or even 3B but he doesn’t play those positions. I don’t buy into the thesis that 3rd baseman must have HR power. It just doesn’t hold water with today’s game. His bat would play pretty well in the OF if he was a plus fielder or could run like the wind. He was an Academic All-American in College and I believe he is extremely intelligent and that shows up in his hitting ability. I think I more than mentioned his name, didn’t I?

    1. It looks like he’s still getting platooned since he has only 9 ABs against lefties. Although he’s 3 for 9 off them with 2 BBs.

    2. About the 3B with power thing: you’re right, it’s not necessary for them to have power. But they should still be an offensive force. Whether that means they hit for high average with good speed, or mash 30 HR a year doesn’t particularly matter. But the position is not as important defensively as 2B/SS/C/CF, so they should ideally be better with the bat.

    3. i have been thinking the same thing about Susdorf. They froze out spidale forever, and it looks like steve is getting pushed down that same path. I would love to see Susdorf up at Lehigh Valley. I understand the need to have a good veteran backup at AAA but we have Thompson and Posednik there, why do we need Montanez as well?

  11. With Tyler Greene struggling in full-season right now, I’d like to see the Phillies consider moving Roman Quinn up to Lakewood for a few At-bats. I’d like to see them give Greene at least 100 PA’S first, but if he continues to struggle, let Quinn hit at Lakewood for about 100 PA’s, before NYPenn starts.
    I doubt it would happen, though. Altherr had over 170 PA’s before they sent him back last year, and he was almost as bad as Greene. Considering Greene is a SS, Altherr’s season was probably worse.
