‘Pigs Win Game One

Lehigh Valley jumped to a 1-0 lead in their best of five Division series against visiting Pawtucket with their 4-2 victory on Thursday evening.  As usual, Rich Thompson got things rolling for the ‘Pigs in the first inning, singling, stealing second and scoring on a Kevin Frandsen ground out to put Lehigh Valley up 1-0 early.  The ‘Pigs added a run in the 2nd inning when Erik Kratz homered.  A Brandon Moss homer, a shot that actually left Coca Cola Park put Lehigh Valley up 3-0 in the 4th and ‘Pigs starter Dave Bush was cruising along until Lars Anderson hit a solo homer for the Red Sox in the 6th to cut the lead to two runs. Bush gave way to Joe Savery in the 7th, having thrown 6.2 very effective innings, giving up just one run on 5 hits.  He walked one and struck out 6.

SS Freddy Galvis answered Anderson’s homer with one of his own to put the ‘Pigs back up by three runs, 4-1 in the 7th. On came Phillipe Aumont for Lehigh Valley in the 8th, who immediately got himself in trouble with two walks, one of whom ended up scoring on a fielder’s choice, cutting the ‘Pigs lead back to two. Ryne Sandberg called on Justin DeFratus to pitch the 9th, and DeFratus was lights out, retiring the PawSox 1-2-3 tp secure the victory.

Notes: Ryan Edell is expected to start Game Two at Coca Cola Park,  Brian Bass will get the call in Game Three in Pawtucket.

Domonic Brown returned to the lineup and went 0-3 with a walk and a stolen base.

  1. I would like to see DeFratus get a call-up after the playoffs are over for the Pigs. He seems to be putting up some good numbers ever since he has been the regular closer.

  2. Great night for LV especially since they got positive contributions from prospects(Galvis, Savery and De Fratus) and not just the AAAA guys that make up most of the roster. Reading didn’t fare as well against the Blue Jay affiliate as Gose and D’Anaud had 2 hits each in a 2-0 loss. Good game for Cloyd 6.2 inn 2ER and 8Ks.

  3. Like to see Moss get a shot after the playoffs are over. (although not on the 40-man so I guess it is pointless) Love the young bullpen too. Good stories all around to LHV

  4. Impressive win for LHV. They got a lead and maintained it with power hitting, Bush and good relief. Aumont’s walks will probably be the reason DeFratus and Schwimer will be back and forth with the Phillies and he will be at LHV to begin 2012. With better command he will be great, but he’ll have to work on it. I look for Overbeck and Brown to hit next game and take a 2-0 series lead to Pawtucket.
In the other game Cloyd pitched well, but the bats were silenced. Clevlen has carried this team lately. He didn’t tonight.

  5. I’m headed to Lehigh Valley tonight and Reading on Sunday. Glad to get one last look at the prospects this offseason.

BTW, somewhat off-topic but Harrisburg’s trip in the Eastern League playoffs has been thrown into a tailspin because of the flooding. Metro Bank Park is in unplayable condition and the entire series is being played in Richmond this weekend.
