  1. That’s a shame. Is it cold-hearted to so immediately ask who gets his spot on the 40-man? Or do they leave it open for now?

    1. Garcia will retain the 40 man roster spot. In order for the Phillies to DL him they would have to promote him, and he would accrue service time. The Phillies will almost certainly call up Garcia on August 31st however. They will immediately put him on the 60 day DL. That move will give them flexibility with their postseason roster (assuming they get there of course).

  2. I wonder who will play second on Reading. Either Cartwright gets activated from the DL (sometimes minor league DL doesn’t really mean they are injured), Hanzawa, or Jeremy Barnes. Hanzawa has done nothing to deserve a promotion so I would like to see Barnes get a shot.

    1. WHat has Barnes done to deserve a promotion? He is hitting .243 in Lakewood, 2 levels below Reading

  3. As long as Garcia rehabs diligently and spends the winter in the batting cage, he can go to LV next spring and lose relatively little development time.

Very tough break for him. Best of luck with the surgery and rehab.

  4. We have pretty good organizational depth at second base – could go with Sandberg, Samuel, or Morandini.

  5. Really hurting at second in the organization. Schoey’s been playing second for Cesar Hernandez at A+. Guess they could always resign guys they released like Mintken or McConnell or get Peyton from XST to fill at lower levels. Should move Barnes to Reading. At 24 he is ready to move up. His bat and power would play well in the Reading Stadium’s friendly confines.

  6. Let’s put Rizzotti or Savery at 2B ha. Not sure where to put it, but there are two solid articles on the minors earlier today on philly.com, one full article on Rizzotti and the second hit on a number of players including Pettibone, Hyatt, and Hewitt.

  7. Not sure where to mention this, but does anyone have any info on Diomedes Mateo LHP? If you look at Transactions for GCL Phillies he was signed on April 4th? Is this a miss print?

    1. It is a misprint, he is a Pirate and can be found on Pirates GCL roster (or one of them, like that).

  8. Garcia should be recalled immediately and placed on the 60 day DL, and thus open up a spot on the 40 man roster. Service time should not be an issue. Not every player they have in minors is a candidate to break the bank in arbitration or strike it rich in Free Agency when their time has accrued. That theory is similar to the “they are holding back Mathieson so they delay his arbitration clock” theory. Or on second thought they should move him when they need to add a player to 40 man roster.

    1. If they really need a 40 man spot, they can just move a guy like Naylor off. Didn’t they just open up a spot with Schlitter going back to Chicago anyway?

          1. What about Naylor, if they put Garcia on the MLB 60 day DL , that automatically will open up a spot on the 40 man roster. Then they can retain him and everybody else they have also. Naylor is also on the DL, for the season so far, and there is no indication he , or any of the other injured players will be out for the season as Garcia reportedly is.

    2. I would be less worried about arbitration and more with using up Garcia’s options. It would be nice to have a young middle infielder that could bounce back and forth to AAA as needed.
However, as the Phillies have proven there are a bunch of AAAA vets that can be moved off and on the 40-man as needed for the same reason, like Valdez was last season.

  9. How about some international free agent middle infielders? Time to dip into our considerable resources. We’ve already lost a lot of ground by not doing so earlier. Draft bonuses are a relative bargain and there is a huge opportunity cost to not utilizing our resources in that manner. There is absolutely no benefit to sticking to slot and you’re actually losing a lot of money by signing lesser prospects for half the cost of a better one, especially for a club who so often trades prospects for veterans. If we shelled out money for Susac or paid extra to sign a better prospect than Hewitt or Hudson, we’d easily have the resources to swing a deal to solidify holes in the big league roster. When you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse, because other teams are using the opportunity to improve. There’s essentially an inflationary aspect to the MLB draft; if you’re building a long-term contender and don’t have one of the top 8 drafts every year, you’re losing significant ground. When other clubs are adding 5 top prospects and you add one, it will inevitably cost you long-term.

    1. They added a couple of International Free Agent SS’s this offseason, then they found their ages were falsified (MLB did) and one they did not retain and the other it is believed he is 21 instead of 16 (like that). That is a possibility down there, and the really good ones will cost in excess of what a serviceable MLB player would. As far as the draft goes, Philly does not draft till 39 and then 66 (now that that is figured out) so forget a really top prospect, and people who want to be paid a king’s ransom to forgoe College, I say forget them also. Susac and the like , there is no guarantee for their success, and the cost would exceed the cost of numerous MLB players.

  10. Clubs willing to spend extra on bonuses can hedge their risk, much like rich people can mitigate risk with a hedge fund. We can and must find middle infielders in this draft. Wong from Hawaii would be an outstanding pick if he drops. A guy like that could be MLB ready in two years. Likewise, an older international FA middle infielder, like say a Cuban refugee, could be a very solid investment so long as his true age is factored into his price. Prep middle infielders and 16 year old Dominicans don’t help us when Rollins and Utley are on their last legs. We should’ve signed those guys 3-4 years ago.

  11. Speaking lies (from BA)
“Known as Luis Valdez when last he pitched for the Braves in ’09, Jairo Asencio spent all of the ’10 season on the restricted list after an identity investigation turned up his new name and age, precluding him from acquiring a work visa.”

  12. Very unfortunate for him and for the Phillies. With a good season he could have been a Sept callup and a better hitter and runner than Valdez. Does this make Martinez more likely to stay?
