I have box scores. I’ll share them with you below the fold.

  1. Lakewood almost did it again, but was foiled by their new problem — men being thrown out at the plate. Now Barnes seems to be coming out of it. His old problem — another error — allowed a run.
Rodriguez threw well again, but they really follow his pitch count closely. I guess his age has to do with it. I sometimes forget how young he is.
I thought Derrick Mitchell could break out this year at Reading because the park is made for power. So far he has shown little power. His two strikeouts with plenty of runners on base did not help the Reading Phils tonight. He is not hitting as well as he did at the lower level.

    1. Mtchell made 5 outs in 4 ABs. He struck out 3 times and hit into a DP. Hewitt had two assists. Maybe he’s been reading here about his poor defense. Singleton had his 1st error but also had an assist.

  2. A little of topic but Yohan Flande is doing pretty good as a reliever for the Braves AAA team and Jesus Sanchez is doing pretty good as a starter on the Brewers AA team.

  3. Kissock is not going to be a starter. I was surprised he was even in the roatation at Reading. I’m assuming he’s keeping the starter spot warm for one of the CLW guys. They’re just waiting to see which guy should move up. Before the start of the season, my guess was May would move up early but he hasn’t gotten himself under control yet.

Rosy and Aumont had good outings.

  4. Why is Savery still in Clearwater ? He needs to play LF or RF at AA and not DH to see if he has a future as a corner outfielder and major league hitter since 1st base is blocked . Its not like he just came out of high school .

    1. I think it’s likely we’ll see promotions in May for both Rizz and Savery if they continue to hit anywhere near their current pace.

Hewitt has no chance. Guys with that kind of strikeout ratio year over year aren’t going to simply bring it all together one season. Was hoping to see some moderate improvement this year, but 19k’s in 43PA’s against 3 walks so far in 2011. Ouch.

Would love to see either of Altherr or James getting it going.

  5. Two questions:

    1. Stephen Batts, is he anything remotely close to a prospect or is it a case of an older guy beating up on young pitching

    2. Sonar, what happened to it?

    Like

    1. 1. Batts was a 19th rounder in 2009 out of East Carolina University. At 25, he’s years older than most of his competition and is a fringe prospect at best.

  6. If Savery has any speed at all, he could be a fine 2nd hole hitter. Polanco can’t last forever. Can he?????

    Like

    1. Speed isn’t really a prerequisite for batting in the 2 hole. Honestly, you dont even really need a speedster at the top of the lineup either. As long as a guy has decent non base clogging speed and very good OBP, you’re golden. An optimal lineup construction has your best two hitters batting 2nd and 4th with your worst two 3rd and 7th IIRC. I know it sounds odd but they did a huge statistical study on it once a upon a time.

      1. Actually, it’s common baseball knowledge that your 3 hitter is your most well rounded hitter (read: best).

        Like

      2. The authors of The Book found that the 4 hole hitter had the most RBI opportunities, followed by 2, 3, and 5, in that order. So the optimal lineup would have your best hitters at 4, 2, 3, then 5, in that order, with the highest-OBP guy (who doesn’t necessarily need to be fast) at 1. The worst hitter is supposed to be 8, which explains why LaRussa bats his pitcher there.

This link explains it in detail:

  7. i would be totally satisfied if savery becomes the next ross gload and overbeck becomes the 2008 version of greg dobbs. i would consider both a sucess if that happens. so what if savery isnt going to be a #2 or #3 starter. being a contributing piece on the 25 man especially on a contending team is huge.

    1. If Savery ever even gets a cup of coffee in the Majors, I’ll be completely satisfied. Even that is such a long-shot of happening.

    1. The ERA for Mathieson the last few days has been incorrect. It’s 2.70 not 4.93 as reported in the daily roundup. I assume this is a copy-paste function and something that just got missed in gkketch’s daily roundup.

      1. Yeah, I missed a day last week and didn’t update the pitchers that worked that day. Should be correct after today.

  9. Funny to see Golson’s name made it into the line (HBP from Grilli) also funny to think that it was he and Austin Jackson tearing up the Eastern League a few years ago then the Yanks decide to trade Jackson and a year after that they pick up Golson.

Also need to give Props to Phillipe who pitched an inning allowing no hits, and no walks and still carrying a 0 ERA

  10. Hard to believe that Julio Rodriguez and Jonathan Pettibone have out pitched Cosart, May and Colvin. In his last two starts J-Rod has been almost unhittable in the first five innings in each of his last two starts giving up only two hits and striking out 10 over those 10 innings. But he has walked five and hit a batter during the same time so he will get only better.

  11. Rodriguez pitched well tonight except it took a lot of pitches 95(56 strikes). his toughest inning was the 4th, after a leadoff triple(poorly played by Castro) he stranded him but walked 2 others having to throw 26(12 strikes) pitches. Still he bounced back with a good 5th before he was removed. Singleton misplayed a line drive that was hit right at him for an error, then he started a 7-6-5 to get him at third. Video of Rodriguez is at youtube at: Thegkita (Threshers 5).

  12. Can you believe Anthony Gose is hitting a buck 89 and Travis d’Arnaud a buck 90 at AA. Glad the Blue Jays did not demand today’s R- Phils starting centerfielder Derrick Mitchell who is hitting .263 instead and who is out producing both of them so far this season in just about every offensive category in the Eastern League.

        1. Mitch went 4 for 7 today to move close to .300 as Reading took two from Akron and Travis Mattair homered and hit a sac fly to move into second place in the FSL rbi race. See both of them as two of the 7 or 8 Phils representatives in the Arizona Fall League come mid October and in the major league camp next spring..

    1. I would trade 3 Derrick Mitchells for either of those guys. Very small sample size so far for both Gose and D’Arnaud. Look at their ages.
