  1. Cloyd needs to be a starter!

Great to see Santana getting into a groove. I need one of these projectable outfielders to develop.

      1. I’m happy to see him draw his first walk of the season. Also glad to see Mattair drawing a walk. These guys just aren’t going to advance swinging at everything.

      1. That Hewitt looked bad against higher competition at showcases was written about before the draft, and BA also predicted the Phillies as drafting Hewitt as well. Usually they’re wrong, but just our luck they called it right that year.

        All the way around.

But hey, Hewitt wasn’t a “tough sign” ($$$) and he damn sure wasn’t represented by Scott Boras, and that’s what’s important. If you don’t believe me just ask Dave Montgomery.

  2. You know if the Lakewood boys ate pancakes or something before that game, then it will be pancakes today and maybe longer. I bet it was great fun for them.
Has the Tyson Brummett light gone on????

  3. CLW outhit the opponent 15 – 6 and lost 5-4. That’s hard to do. Lakewood was 10 – 20 with RISP. Even Hewitt had 2 hits. We’d be remiss to not mention Batts 2 HR and 5 RBIs. For Hewitt that would be a season.

    1. Followup: The sad thing is that it was actually close:

      First 12 games: 25 runs
      Yesterday: 18 runs

If you take Tues into account, its even worse:

      First 11 games: 21 runs
      Last 2 games: 22 runs

Reversion to the norm is fun, eh?

      1. That’s not how regression works, it doesn’t compensate for previous events but simply guarantees that going _forward_ the team performance will resemble the expected mean.

        Like

        1. Of course, to resemble the expected mean, we need to expect performances greater than the mean…

          1. I expect continued Mendoza line hitting. Though I’d like to see Mendez get more time at 3B.

  4. Hopefully, Colvin’s injury isn’t serious and he’ll be back very soon. It will be interesting to see if they just put Cloyd back into the pen at C Water or if they at least move him up to Reading’s pen where we all agree he should be.

  6. Is Edgar Duran a SS we can be excited about? Savery is half way to 100AB’s with a 510 avg. and 1.21 OPS. I say another 50 AB’s at close to the same numbers and he goes right to Lehigh.

    1. One thing to be concerned about on Savery…most of his hits are singles. He’s not hitting for a lot of power. That makes me think that he’s simply killing younger competition but won’t transition all that well to AA & AAA.

      Like

      1. Yes, most of his hits are singles. Most of anybody’s hits are singles. The most often hit in baseball is … a single. He has a .163 ISO. Let’s give him some credit. He’s hitting the ball well and he’s hitting for decent power right now.

        Like

        1. I definitely give him a ton of credit but it stood out a bit to me. A guy hitting .500 should probably have a higher ISO than that is all. Hopefully they kick him up to AA soon so we can see if this is real or not.

          1. Just as a point of reference (I realize that this is not an apples to apples comparison) but the average NL 1B has a .136 ISO so far in 2011. They range from .020 (Carlos Pena) to .235 (Prince Fielder). 10/16 NL 1B have an ISO of less than .163, with Ike Davis of the Mets being closest at .162.

            Like

            1. The point of ISO is to remove batting average from the equation. A .500 batting average doesn’t make an ISO of .163 any more or less impressive than if the batter hit .250.

      2. Savery didn’t show any real power swinging aluminum in college. He was drafted as a pitcher, always seen as a pitching prospect at Rice, while getting a lot of AB as a two way player.

He’s a failed, ridiculously bad 1st round pick. The Phils are simply trying to salvage something. Savery is not going to be a .900 OPS corner outfielder. Just purge the thought from your mind(s).

        1. That whole “he never had real power” argument isn’t really fair. He slugged .559 his sophomore year at Rice with an OPS of 1.030. He’s always been a good hitter, and in developmental terms he’s crushing the competition at nearly his level.

          1. Andrew Susac was slugging .614 when he broke his hamate bone a couple weeks ago.

$$$ didn’t think he was was worth paying and getting Bud Selig upset.

Hey Skunky, can you get me Pepe Le Pew’s autograph?

    2. He(Duran) is getting pretty lucky with his batting average on balls in play. Not to be a downer, but so is Domingo.

      Like

      1. If his BA is going to be above .150, doesn’t Domingo have to have a super high BABIP? He K’s about half the time.

Hopefully his K’s will come down, BB will go up, and he will continue to pound the pitches he does hit. The talent seems to be there but can he put it together consistently?

  7. Anyone thinking that were gonna be seeing D’Arby break out soon? The 2/4 yesterday is encouraging and I feel like he might have an outfield assist or two by this point in the season.

    Like

    1. He does have an outfield assist or two and has a higher percentage of walks and if given the opportunity to play in atleast 5 consistent games, I think there will be a break out. But sometimes when you come in the 9th to hit or play in and out of so many different games it makes it hard to break out.

  8. not sure if anyone noticed it, but phoulballz is reporting that Hernandez went under the knife yesterday for his labrum and should be out all year.

    Like

    1. Not much of a shock. Last year they said they caught it ‘just before’ his labrum tore… Well a frayed or slightly frayed labrum doesn’t magically heal itself back.

Labrum injuries are about 1000x scarier than Tommy John surgery. Pretty much all pitchers recover from TJ surgery nowadays, where-as labrum surgery is a crap-shoot at best.

  9. I saw a few games so far this year. The Lakewood BlueClaws have some great pitching with Biddle there this year, but we gotta keep those bats swinging to get us through and take some pressure off our pitchers and bullpen. Go BlueClaws

  10. One guy that I’m keeping an eye is Morgado. So far so good with him.

Only 2 walks, in 8 innings, not striking out tons of batters. But the fact that he’s throwing strikes makes me happy. Lefties with good velocity can do some damage in the big leagues.

    Brummett from LHV

Drops: Gordon off the DL to LHV
