Romero to the DL, Zagurski Called Up

The Phils placed LHP JC Romero on the 15 disabled list with a calf strain and called up LHP Mike Zagurski from AAA Lehigh Valley. Zagurski, 28, was the Phils 12th round selection in the 2005 draft and has spent parts of two seasons with the big club.  In the early going for Lehigh Valley, Zagurski has appeared in three games, without allowing an earned run in 3.2 innings. He has walked one, struck out 7 and earned one save.

Called up to take Zagurski’s spot in the Lehigh Valley ‘pen is RHP Chance Chapman. Chapman, 27, was the Phils 8th round pick of the 2007 draft. In 29 appearances for Reading last year, Chapman was 2-3 with a 5.36 ERA in 50.1 IP.  He walked 22, struck out 27 and had a WHIP of 1.45. Chapman has been impressive in the early going this year, with three scoreless appearances, allowing just a lone hit in 3.2 innings.

  1. A quick glance at our upper minors depth shows we are really thin on left handed relief. I actually think Zags could be as good or better than Romero at this point but beyond that we are really thin. Not sure I want to see Juan Perez on an emergency callup and Sergio Escalona has moved on to the Astros organization.

    1. That is true but 3 LHP relievers for 1 or 2 spots really isn’t too bad. Also, the only NL lineup really necessitating the use of multiple lefties is the Phillies so the Phils could go with 1 LHP reliever and be ok in my opinion.

  2. Zagurski earned a callup in his brief LHV stint this season. 13 batters faced, seven strikeouts. His one walk was issued intentionally. Good luck to Mike, as realistically this may be make or break for him in the majors.

  3. I don’t this as a make-or-break opportunity for Zagurski. He’s a solid guy, and a good lefty option. Injuries set him back, but he’s worked hard to get back to this point. He had a good season last year at LHV and had a tremendous spring with the big club. Mike is going to pitch in the big leagues and, my bet, is that someday he is a serviceable lefty setup type.

  4. Watched Diekman strike out the side on Sunday. Only the second time I ever saw him make an appearance and not walk a batter. Each pitch was at the knees and on one of the corners. He was brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

  5. I saw Diekman pitch last night, and he just reminds me a lot of German, the guy they had last year (Who I think is in XST this year).

  6. Kendrick, Baez and now Zagurski in the same bullpen. Hopefully they don’t have to use any of them for the next couple days in a close game.

    1. My patience has officially expired with Kendrick and Baez. Time to inject some young talent to replace these two.

  7. Since Zags had appeared close to MLB and in the times we’ve seen him, he has been the gasoline brought in to flare the other team’s fire. He can’t throw strikes in MLB, and I wonder how people here can find him worthy to pitch in the bigs.

He could help at AAA where he doesn’t get scared by MLB hitters, but not at the MLB level.

Award for the least successful relief lefty in the top of the system.

  8. Another fine Herndon outing. Its 9-0 ninth inning and unless I am wrong Raul is still in the game.

Any word on the Harold Garcia injury?

      1. Agreed, his stuff was much better than I thought it would be. His fastball was 90-93 and his slider has a real sharp bite on it. His command was a little off but that’s to be expected for a guy making his first appearance, in my opinion. Let’s see how he does the next time out.

  9. Let’s pretend Chance Chapman goes on to have a great year. Is this how it works? Someone who’s been middling for a while has a great year and essentially never looks back?

  10. I wouldn’t dismiss Chapman right away. Really had one bad season last year. Decent peripherals, very stingy in allowing the home run ball (13 career in 350 IP). Relievers do often put everything together late and several all stars did not debut until 27-later.

  11. Really hard for me to believe that the phillies, if the oportunity comes wont spend money on a righthanded bat, I Know they have spent a ton on salary, but if it would help put them over the top,no way theydont do it in my opinion

      1. Wright would be interesting, but there is absolutely no way that the Mets trade him to the Phillies. When was the last time those two teams made a trade of any significance? Lenny Dykstra?

    1. McCutcheon is cost controlled. You’d have to back the Brinks truck up to get him. I’d obviously take him, but I view Wright’s cost as a lot lower plus he can hit in the heart of the lineup, not sure if McCutcheon can yet.

  13. The Phillies don’t (nor anyone else outside of KC) have enough prospects to trade for McCutcheon. Wright could be traded at the deadline, but the Mets would fold before trading him to the Phillies.
If the Tigers are out of it, Magglio Ordonez would probably be the type the Phillies could get.

    1. I agree that, if the Phillies make a move later in the season, Ordonez is the kind of player they should go after. Hopefully, with Brown ready later this season and Singleton a couple of years later, the Phils need only a short-term fix for the outfield.

The infield presents a more difficult problem to solve. The days of the Phils’ getting exceptional power from their middle infield are coming to a close. At some point, I’d like to see the Phils pick up a traditional power-hitting 3B who bats right. Preferably, they can draft such a player.
