Here they are. A mixed bag, which is normally the case.

  1. Any word on why Singleton was lifted for a pinch runner? Playing him only 5 innings as a precaution since it was his first game in the field maybe?

    1. I’d like to see Overbeck try the OF. He looks like a right-handed Greg Dobbs. He can play 1st, 3rd in a pinch and if he can play the OF, then let’s get him moving up.

    2. why is Overbeck playing 1st base? We desperately need depth at 3rd base and left field. the last thing we seem to need is more depth at 1st in the minors and obviously the major league level. Have the Phils determined that he cannot play 3b at the major league level?

      1. He’s a really bad 3B defensively and he cannot play it at even an acceptable level for MLB caliber defense.

  2. Santana, and Duran are improving. Mendez is a hitter. Hollands is throwing well. Knigge and Sosa are steady relievers. This will be a game Hewitt will remember with fondness. Signs of life in Lakewood.
Overbeck continues to hit for power, but then again, it is in Reading. If you don’t hit for power there, you don’t have it. I applaud Overbeck. I hope Garcia is OK. He is a true .300 hitter.
Worley did well, but Chapman had a tough intro to AAA.
May seems to hit a wall in Clearwater. I hope he overcomes these command problems that seem to crop up there.

    1. Chapman finally decided that with Lehigh’s defense the only way to get out of the inning was to strike everyone out or at least 5 of 6.

      1. starting to see why Bellard was released by the Yanks, no range. Looks like he cost Chapman a couple of runs. He can still swing the lumber a little though.

    1. You might want to consider adding Cody Overbeck to the “Others” category. He is playing out of his mind right now.

  5. Give Worley some props for once again looking like a guy that could easily be the 5th starter on our club if we needed him and would likely be a starter on at least 20 other MLB clubs at the moment.

    Like

    1. He not only could be a 5th starter, but who would you rather see come into a game in the 6th inning of a Phillies game with the Phils behind 7-5, Worley or Kyle Freaking Kendrick. Does he have pictures of Dubee and Charlie taking a shower together or something? Kendrick has no right whatsoever to be in the major leagues, and at $2.4MM, what is that about? I’d take Worley or Stutes in a heartbeat over Kendrick. One other comment, how many #3 hitters in the major leagues have ONE RBI, ONE, as in less than two and one more than ZERO. Rollins is killing us, as is Ibanez and Francisco, back to pitching, I expect to see David Herndon driving up the NE Extension any day now, maybe he’ll pass Stutes and Worley heading south! Let’s hope for the Phillies sake.

  6. Using Anthony Hewitt as a benchmark. James Murphy lower batting average-same number of strikeouts (16) . See , even player starting 3rd year at LO-A or above in tank. Aaron Altherr- 6 points higher in Batting Average- 2 fewer strikeouts. And those batting averages are relatively low(got numbers from Baseball Reference link above- hope they included last night’s action).

  7. LKW- Edgar Duran 3 for 4 with a triple, top Batting Average among regulars at .306. On my list.

  8. I know the results weren’t there for Zagurski last night, but his stuff is pretty good for a LHP reliever. He definitely has more in the tank than Romero at this point and if he can improve his command, could be a very effective reliever.

    1. They brought him in specifically to face a left-handed hitter and he WALKED him. I don’t think it gets any worse than that.

  9. RDG and LVIP options. If keeping both Rizzotti and Overbeck in lineup for their standard and above hitting, then the possibility of no-DH games against National League affiliates might derail this some. One option might be the moving of Overbeck to LF at RDG, and soft-pedaling the playing time of more active than expected Mike Spidale. Another option might be the shift of Jeff Larish to LF for LVIP, and soft pedaling the playing time of the minor league veterans with little production so far, Rich Thompson and/or Cory Sullivan. (a complication to that scenario could be if they desire to play Delwyn Young somewhere and not benching the standard and above producer Brandon Moss and neither playing CF.) Having, in that case, an opening at LVIP, they could promote Rizzotti or Overbeck and clear some logjam. I say the move of either Overbeck or Larish to LF would be a sound move, as both have played 3B, and LF is 3B,only further away. Or the straight cash sale of Larish to an organization needing such a player, always a sound option.

    Like

    1. 3B is like LF?? You must never have played. I will bet the ranch thant neither player will get moved to LF as neither can play the OF.

      Like

      1. A player that can play 2B, SS, or 3B can play LF, and if a bit of a stronger arm RF, and if born with the ability to run fast , CF as well. What does it take, some kind of athletic savant? How is catching a fly ball in LF that different from catching a foul pop up at 3B, other than judging some different angles and distances and the ability to move a bit, and people that can’t move generally don’t start off at 3B. A long list could be made of MLB LF’s that didn’t even have the athletic ability of these 2.
And in the minor leagues in a lesser defensive priority position like LF, it should be about identifying hitters and them getting the AB’s.

        Like

        1. Lots of 3B have gone on to play LF with no issues. Two guys off the top of my head would be Chipper Jones and Ryan Braun. Its not a huge transition.

    2. well thought out response. I see a pattern with Overbeck–struggle the first year at a level, crush year 2–this happened at Clearwater and now Reading. I do recall reading over the winter that somebody high in the organization said Overbeck was the best fastball hitter in the organization and there is room at the MLB level for a guy like him.

  13. Stutes not being on the 40 man roster might hurt his chances of getting to Philly quickly. Worley, however, is on the 40 man and got a little taste last year. My guess is that he’ll be next man up and with the way Herndon is pitching, it could be soon.

  16. Tyler Cloyd pitched well today with one hit over six innings. He is back to having good command, as he was before two years of losing that command. With two or three more outings like this, he may be thought of for a move to Reading by mid year.
You could almost see Lakewood’s hitters building for today, especially Santana. He looks like he is starting to feel better at the plate.
What is it with Hernandez at Clearwater and Santana at Lakewood always being thrown out at the plate. They are both blessed with speed. Is the third base coach overestimating that speed? Do they get bad jumps?

    1. Since the middle of last season Ellis has been one of the better relievers in the system. He must have picked up a favorable pitch because he used to give up a lot of hits and runs. The Phillies have always seen his strengths. He is one of the older players. He doesn’t have a lot of time to get to the majors.

      1. For relief pitchers, I don’t think age is that much of a factor. A lot of relief pitchers don’t make the majors until they are older (late 20’s) and still have solid careers. Heath Bell, John Axford, and Ryan Franklin all didn’t make their ML debuts until they were 26. There are also other guys that start to get really good later in their careers like Cliff Lee.
