No time for a witty (or non-witty) intro tonight. The box scores are below the fold.

    1. Yeah, Mattair is creeping back on to my radar. If he continues to hit with some pop, and if his glove is as good as it was before his hiatus, then we got ourselves a third base prospect

      1. Of you guys that catch a game or two in C-Water, does Mattair look like he’s figured it out? Is he suddenly hitting the ball harder? Its a lot to hope for, but he’s a good kid and he just looks like he should be a great ballplayer. My fingers will remain crossed…

  1. Come on what are you nuts? Why the hell didn’t savory play? Im sorry, was his f$$$ing average dipping too low, maybe he needs to work on his swing.

      1. I believe he throws a heavy sinker…but not a splitter. Our organization doesn’t like young guys to throw splitters due to the stress on the elbow.

    1. When you comine his last 10 starts of last year with his starts so far this year, its going to b eimpossible to ignore this kid much longer. He is a legit prospect. On the other hand, I’m getting nervous that Trevor May is going the other way with his struggling control.

    1. I have never really jumped on the ‘dump on Hewitt’ bandwagon but I realize I have stopped looking him up when I check box scores. Hit K rate is so terrible which is doubly bad since I am sure it is the thing he is most being coached on above everything else.

He must be a gifted kid but he swings at everything and it does not seem like this behavior can be hammered out of him.

      1. I can say that I was a founding member of that group. His first year when they up and declared he couldn’t play SS he’s move to 3B was a sign of things to come. Firstly, it was a sign that he couldn’t play 3B either, and they moved him to the OF where the hole in his bat really became apparent and now we’re stuck with a .125 hitting corner OF who can’t play a lick of outfield.

His attitude at the end of last season sent me over the deep end when he decided he wouldn’t play fall or winter leagues instead “getting away from the game”. I guess I would too if I was striking out at a 50% clip.

I don’t care that they’ve spent $ on him, they’ve struck pay dirt on enough other guys in that draft class that they’ve gotten their monies worth. Just cut the guy – or trade him to Pittsburgh with the rest of the wash-outs.

        1. Hewitt seems to have very little talent. He is the rare ‘toolsy’ first-rounder who lacks defensive talent. As a hitter he lacks both pitch recognition and contact skills. He has no patience. He is credited with ‘raw power’ which I guess means he can swing really hard and does alright against batting practice pitching. His one skill seems to be running speed. That is a dime a dozen. He entered the draft out of high school both unusually old and unusually raw for even a ‘toolsy’ first round pick. The Phillies have made some bad, bad first round picks over the years with toolsy HS position players, but he was the worst choice of them all. He doesn’t even come close to the baseball ability of Golson, Taylor, and Jackson, our prior busts.

        2. I’m not trying to defend Hewitt, but I’m not sure why people think he’s a bad outfielder. Have you guys seen him play there? I have not. But I do not remember reading anywhere that his OF defense is poor. He certainly has tools to play good defense (speed and arm).

I wish him the best. I am truly not all that upset that he is getting ABs in low A. I don’t feel like that’s so negatively impacting our ability to generate prospects. I understand those who think Dugan should be playing, but he was a fairly high draft pick too, so the Phils must have some reason for putting him in XST.

          1. Their reasoning is that he was injured during his first 2 seasons of pro ball and needs more AB’s in the MY-Penn League. That’s fine, I just don’t want them giving his AB’s 2 months from now at Lakewood to Hewitt. He’s been given time to show something and he’s done just that. He’s shown that he can’t play.

I don’t think anyone has personal issues with the kid on here – everyone is pretty much analyzing his performances and pro career to date and it leaves something to be desired (to be nice about it). He hasn’t worked out, let’s move on.

          2. Unfortunately, when you watch Hewitt play, he just doesn’t look like a guy with baseball instincts. He runs the bases like he’s not sure what to do, he bats like he can’t recognize offspeed pitches, and he plays the outfield like a guy that can’t read fly balls. He seems like a nice guy and is strong and fast but he lacks baseball skills. Its a shame but it seems like he’s a washout.

          3. Except, he was drafted as an infielder and evaluated pre-drafted based upon his IF defense skills. He is in the OF now, because he flunked out as a defensive 3B. I’ve never heard him mentioned among our plus defensive OF. He may well be adequate, but his value was predicated upon playing SS/3B and he showed he could play neither. Now, he is simply one of our poorest offensive OF and not a defensive standout.

  2. On the plus side, Cesar Hernandez has 2 hits. He has 7 hits in 11 games and 5 of them were in just two of those games. Hyatt had another nice outing fanning 7 in six innings and giving up 5 hits and a run. Mattair continues to impress but a telling sign for me is that he doesn’t have a BB yet. He was a walk machine 2 years ago. I’d say pitchers are challenging him instead of nibbling on the corners. When pitchers start respecting him a bit, he’ll see less good pitches to hit. That’s when we’ll see if he’s for real or not. for now I cheering him on.

On the down side, Aumont took the loss in the Reading game giving up 4 unearned runs. 4 errors in the 9th sealed the deal including one by Aumont. Even Galvis had an error and then was thrown out of the game for arguing a call. That 9th must have been ugly. How bad can the Lakewood lineup get? There are some talented guys in that lineup. They need a good butt whoopin’ by a leader on that team. Goosfraba.

    1. Interesting interp on the no walks by Mattair. My guess is that he’s trying to be much more aggressive and hit strikes early in the count. I agree that he’ll need to let more bad pitches go by if he continues to hit and that will be a great tell on how he’s really doing.

    2. Aumont outing was the biggest eye-opener for me. First I saw he got the loss, bad. 2nd I see 4 runs in the last inning, really bad. Then I look at his pitching line and see 4 runs, NONE earned and I figure he just imploded after an error, not good. Then I see he only let up two baserunners (1 hit, 1 walk) and I wonder there were even 4 runners around to score. Very weird.

Then I read that Galvis had one of the errors. I hope it is a good mental test for Aumont to come back strong in his next appearance.

  3. I was at the Reading game last night. Some quick notes –

Hyatt sat between 86-88 on his FB (once or twice rearing back and hitting 90-91) with his offspeed offerings in the low 80’s. Showed pretty good command of the FB, but not so much with the offspeed stuff. Overall, he pitched pretty well, and bore down in the 6th to get through the inning.

Rosenberg looked pretty good as well, and appeared to be a bit disappointed coming out of the game with 2 outs in the 8th and a runner on second (at which time they brought in Aumont). It appeared that Parent really wanted to win this game.

Boy oh boy, the 9th inning was a disaster. I won’t recap the entire inning as the play-by-play pretty much does that for you, but Rizotti is a real butcher out there. Howard’esque with his throws. Bad night all around for him – he looked lost against a really good pitching prospect in Turner (the #1 guy in the Tigers org according to BA), who was dealing all night.

Offensively, nobody looked too impressive last night, and Galvis looked really overmatched against Turner. Gosewhich had a nice AB late in the game, fouling off multiple pitches, eventually hitting a 2 out game tieing double.

    1. I actually think the Reading stadium gun is 2-3 mph slow. JC Ramirez was reading 88-89 and touching 91, and his opponent was registering 83-84. Neither of those felt right at all.

      Like

      1. You’re right, the Reading gun has seen its better days. When Ramirez was pitching at Dunedin in a spring training game he was sitting at 93-94 on the scoreboard gun there.

        Like

        1. That could be the case. The flip side is the guy they were facing (Turner – the #1 prospect in the Tigers org), was sitting around 91-92 most of the game and was very impressive.

      2. Yeah, last season the Reading gun was 3 MPH slow. Good to hear that Hyatt’s fastball was looking well. If he can maintain a good fastball to go with his changeup, he’ll play in the major leagues.

          1. Honestly, if D Brown can play everyday in RF, that might not be a bad idea. Platoon them and get something out of them.

            Like

  4. Brown will get an opportunity w/ the big club if he starts out hot. the outfielders are floundering. What is the deal with Lakewood? Altherr and Santana hit the ball all spring and now they can’t buy a good night.

  5. Mathieson 61 pitches has to be the most he has thrown in a game in along time. 4 walks though. I guess he was effectively wild.

  6. Good to see Dom is back on the field. ST gave me hope Francisco might catch lightning in a bottle but last night he was pathetic. Makes me wonder if they have a target or some targets they would like to go after to secure some MLB pop.

I wonder what it would take to get a guy like Carlos Quentin from the ChiSOX? I think we are starting to see the holes in the line-up many predicted half way through ST.

    Like

    1. Why do we need to think of trading for an OF bat at this point with Domonic on the way? I am not totally giving up on Ibanez but with Brown in the mix we probably have enough offense to win the division assuming the starting pitching stays relatively healthy.

Maybe we rethink this after the All-Star break, but why panic now? With Brown up we might be able to go to two different L/R platoons with Mayberry also in a role. I am surprised they have not given him a start or two for Raul, who is at an age where he should be rested once or twice a week anyway.

      Like

      1. Andy I’m totally with you there. If I have one complaint about Charlie it’s his unwillingness to rest his core starters. Mayberry should be starting every game in LF vs. LHP at this point.

        Like

          1. Exactly. You can’t give him 5 PA’s a week then complain that he’s not sharp b/c you’re not giving him opportunities! It’s a viscious cycle!!!

      2. Absolutely. I’m not panicing just thinking ahead. I don’t think the GM’s in the league sit around and wait for problems to become real. I have to believe they envision certain scenarios and how they may address them down the road.

Would you not agree that offense continues to be a problem? At the very least I agree with you Charlie should be going into full time platoon strategy in LF RF and 2B with Mayberry, Gload and Orr.

That is unless the full time guy gets really hot then you ride with that. It bugs me that Blanton can get you to the 7th with 2 runs and you don’t come away with a win.

        Like

        1. What is “really hot”? First 0’fer and back to the bench? Whichever PH gets a hit gets the start tomorrow?

I actually wanted Dobbs and Francisco to start more than once a week last season to give the starters a rest. The lineup would be fine with the replacement guy batting 7th. Then Dobbs forgot how to hit and was unplayable in the field and Francisco just did not seem to get the opportunity.

The starters have earned their positions over the years. I agree with Ibanez getting some time off, and if the Phillies had a good backup INF then resting Utley, Polanco, and Rollins about once every two weeks. Like to see Garcia have a good year to fill that role next season.

      3. Trading for an OF makes sense when you realize we need 2 good OFs not just 1 rookie prospect.

BenFran and Ibanez are both brutal.

        Like

        1. But we are still 10-5 with that brutal OF offense. Add Brown and we may have enough offense. Add Utley and you may not need to think about a deal.

There are many reasons to let this play out till after the All Star break when you have a better idea of how much offense you need and what the team’s record is.

          1. Enough offense for what, to win the N.L. East?

            They already have.

What about the post-season? I thought the Phillies were about winning the World Series? Does that look like a World Series lineup to you? Watch the Yankees for a few games before you answer, or even the Rangers.

            1. or the SF Giants…
whose best hitter last season was a career year by castaway Huff. The Giants had a bunch of “once good” hitters (bench of Sandoval, Rowand, Renteria, DeRosa, …) and they got enough hits to win.

    2. Carlos Quentin’s lifetime OPS vs. LH is only .777….we need someone who is more effective against lefties.

  7. Why is Mathieson going 3 innings and throwing 60 pitches? Are they grooming him to be a long man for the big club? Seems like his arm might fall off with that much work…

    1. We were running out of pitchers last night with the doubleheader. Zagurski was pulled from his turn because of the Romero injury. Grilli pitched in both games. We were down to position players pitching had SWB tied it up in the seventh (per Ryno).

Scotty said something like, he’s got no problem going three innings, but would prefer to do it in less than 60 pitches (something to that effect).

  8. Pettibone. I think its time to get excited. BA was high on him coming into the season. I think we could see him bumped to Reading before anyone else. His secondary stuff is advanced.

    Like

    1. Bob, where did you see that his secondary stuff is advanced? I thought the knock on him was that he had little in the way of good secondary stuff. It would be pretty good to hear that his secondaries are good because his fastball is supposed to have good movement on it.

  9. I think they should bump Hewitt up to Reading. He honestly can’t do worse then he is doing at Lakewood.

    1. Not big on Rivero at third in Reading. Seems lackadaisical in his demeanor but looked great in BP . My man Moose is now fourth in runs batted in the FSL after another game winner last night. Give him shot at Reading sometime this season. Should be there anyway if he had not repeated Lakewood one season and retired the next.

      Like

      1. Rickey, I like the idea of Moose too but he has not produced at all, ever. He will have to sustain this level for a meaningful period of time to get a bump to AA. He has been scorching the last six games after doing nada the first six games. Let’s hope he continues his hot streak. It’s early yet.

  10. I know this is about the “Phuture Phils”, but with all the talk about the current Phils, I want to add my two cents. I agree, Mayberry should at the least be platooning with Ibanez, who can’t hit RH pitching anymore, how is going to hit LHs. Also, Gload & Fransisco make a lot of sense. Fransisco is falling off the charts. And, if Pete Orr can field, he has always been a decent hitter. Give him some ABs somewhere, although Valdez is hitting a lot better than I expected. BTW – How can you hit 3rd behind Victorino and Polanco and have ONE RBI after 15 games, ONE!! That blows my mind! Stick a fork in that man, he is done!

    Like

    1. Pete Orr has a lifetime OPS of .630 in the majors and .687 in the minors…that’s not a decent hitter IMO.

      Like

    2. I couldn’t agree more, there is no reason to believe a pair of platoons wouldn’t be more effective. Or, if that is not Charlie’s preference, Mayberry at least deserves some time in RF if not LF.

  11. Good Article in the Philly Daily News today on the minors . They list Hyatt’s career numbers with the organization 17-5 won /lost with an ERA of 2.64 with 286 K in 221 innings.
Maybe this will get him the respect he deserves and a higher rating in the top 30 next year ?

  12. I could see Belliard helping the big club soon. He’s hitting well for LV. He’s always been a professional hitter that gives you good at bats and sees pitches. Charlie apparently doesn’t trust Martinez to hit yet and they can’t stash him all year on the bench so he can pinch run occasionally. Belliard can fill in at 2nd and/or 3rd right now and be a reliable PH if/when Chase returns.

    Like

    1. Yea, I don’t like Martinez that much. If they are keeping him on the roster just for the sake of not losing him, I think they should just trade for him and then send him to AAA.

      Like

      1. Why? He’s not a kid anymore. He is what he is. If you’re going to just send him to AAA, just give him back instead. He’s not going to suddenly become better with another season in the minors.

  13. A few questions…what happened to the Altherr 3B experiment? Can Savery really play OF? Having seen him in person numerous times- he seems like he can’t move very well or not well enough to cover much ground. How does he do running the bases? I have seen him pitch before but never hit or run.

    Like

    1. If you go to the blog PhoulBalz ,or something, they have an interview with Altherr. He said they tried him at 3rd for a time, and then they told him to concentrate on OF. So the Altherr to 3rd experiment looks like a no go. And if you check the stats, the Altherr in the OF at LO-A , doesn’t look so hot , right now, either.

  14. I’d be excited about Pettibone if he had more strikeouts. Hard to see him advancing to the next level with so few K.

I have fingers on both hands crossed that this isn’t Mattair’s hottest month of the season. If he put himself in play as a real prospect that would make up for a lot of egregious failings currently materializing before our eyes.

Guantlett Eldemire, Brian Pointer, and Kelly Dugan are in XST. If Lakewood’s outfield numbers look the same in two weeks those three will have to be their new outfield.

    They couldn’t do any worse.

    Like

    1. I agree on Pettibone. Though, his high GB rate makes up for it a little I’d still like to see some more K’s.

I also really want to see what Pointer and Eldemire can do but I don’t think we’ll see them until Williamsport. Dugan should probably be in Lakewood.

      Like

      1. Gauntlett Eldemire is 22 years old. He should be in Clearwater. If he can’t hit enough to stay in Lakewood – especially with what is not going on there – then he’s no prospect.

And Dugan falls into that category as well. He’s 20.
