Petition to put Geancarlo Mendez on the “others” list. Just playing 3rd base is about enough considering our weakness there and he’s off to a nice start too. Even if he is a little old for Lakewood.
The over/under line on Hewitt’s batting average has been set at .090. Poor guy, he’s really struggling. That Lakewood lineup is just full of free swingers…
Biddle’s stat line wasn’t as bad as it looks. There were two plays in which the ball skipped over and glanced off of Mendez’s glove plus a throwing error by Barnes to put people on. His only major mistake was the HR he gave up. He did manage to strike Harper out twice. The second of which caused Harper to through his helmet into the dugout and break his bat over his knee. Was impressed by the poise Biddle showed after giving up the homer.
Saw Buchanan pitch Friday night as well. Fastball reached low 90’s but the weather was less than perfect. Low 50’s with strong winds all night. Mendez came out of no where with his bat.
Hewitt is definitely as bad as advertised. The past couple of years I’ve managed to see him has done nothing to convince me as otherwise. Santana is starting to awake with the bat with a few hits and a HR this weekend. Almost had another one today that he took to the opposite field warning track. Collier injured himself in a SB on Friday night. Lakewood just needs time for their hitters to wake up.
Totally agree on Biddle. Read the recap for the inning where he let up 4 runs on milb.com. Bunt single, infield single, throwing error (run), wild pitch, fly out, GB single (run), HR (2 runs), K swinging, ground out to pitcher. One, maybe two balls hit hard.
A few things from the Clearwater game that doesn’t show up in the boxscore. Cosart threw 43 pitches in the first 4 innings, 30 for strikes; then 48 in his last two innings, 27 for strikes. He ran only two 3 ball counts in innings 1-4, but 4 in innings 5 and 6(including his only walk). Despite laboring in the last 2 innings, with a little luck he could have escaped with no runs allowed. The first run scored on a line drive single to center that James came in on and trapped, then he threw a frozen rope to the plate, but it short hopped Valle and he couldn’t handle it. The second run scored on a two out bloop single. Savery got 2 hits but the out he made was probably his hardest hit ball of the night. He also faced lefty reliever who threw 2 curves for strikes and then tried one more and he lined a single to right. Hernandez did single but it was a blooper, I’ve seen him play 5 games and he’s hit the ball hard only 2 times. He’s not really a big kid, he might be taller than Galvis but thinner, so he might be facing some of the same problems Freddy has been battling. Ruf looks like a right handed Rizzotti, just not as good a hitter, his double was an opposite field blast that missed going out by 2 feet. Singleton warmed up with the team but was only used as a pinch hitter, he saw 3 pitches and then Shoenberger was thrown out trying to advance on a ball that got away from the catcher for the 3rd out. Apparently Singleton can’t play defense since Gump went in to play left and Singleton never got a chance to swing the bat.
Wow, those offensive numbers in Lakewood are ugly. My favorite little surprise of the year so far is that Freddy Galvis’ numbers are creeping up–.280 is definitely entering the realm of respectability for a SS. Like a lot of folks here, I was starting to despair about him, but it seems like maybe the little improvements some of us noted in spring training may be indicators of something good happening.
I’ve scene an improvement in his confidence at the plate where he’s gotten walked and swung better at Reading this year versus last. Obviously he has a great glove seeing him range to the 2nd base side of the bag to make a grab and throw out a runner last Thursday. He was hitting around .300 for the first week and a half and dipped a little, but holding his own and hope to see him continue to improve. Maybe replace Rollins or the stop gap they sign this off season.
Im pretty sure that JRoll wont be in a phillies uniform next year. I think Valdez has earned a shot at being the stopgap with Galvis waiting in the wings.
I think that Rollins will be here, and a stop gap free agent otherwise. But predictions aside, if they really do follow your scenario, and if we take into consideration other issues with the starting 8 (uncertainty regarding Utley, aging throughout the lineup, etc.), next year’s offense could be REALLY bad.
I really have to laugh a bit at the Galvis enthusiasm. There seems to be a group of people here who think that he would be a real prospect if he could just hit .280. The only thing that would change my mind about Galvis as a prospect would be if he could either develop a little pop, or double his BB rate.
To be fair, I at least respect the arguemnt that goes a bit like this: “he’s young for his level, maybe he will learn to hit & eventually hit well enough to be a major league regular.” I don’t buy it (in the sense that I think that the chance of it happening is less than 10%), but it’s an argument. What I don’t buy is (a) the notion that all he needs to do to be a quality ML regular, with his defense, is hit in the .280 range; (b) the notion that he is someone who can be looked at as a replacement for Rollins in the next couple of years, and (c) the notion that Valdez is even a stop gap solution at short (of course he is being used as a stop gap solution at second base, even worse, but that’s out of necessity rather than design).
Duke,
I’m with Larry on this one. I think the Phils can work something out with JRoll for 2 years, maybe 3, at a reasonable number for him to stay. Of course if someone comes in with a stupid offer around the 4 or 5 year range then that’s another thing, but his slash numbers since ’07 haven’t been the kind to warrant that type of deal.
As for Galvis, I’m again with Larry – I’m none too impressed with a SS who hits below the Mendoza line several years in a row in the minors. Are we suddenly expecting him tobe able to hit the ball out of the infield? I think Galvis as an everyday player is a pipe dream. Our SS of the future more than likely isn’t in the organization yet.
The back end of the doubleheader pitchers couldn’t get it going. Zeid and Shreve were smacked around. Ramirez pitched well. That’s 2 quality starts. I like that. Galvis is holding his own but we all know that he can be streaky. There were times last year when we’d say that he’d turned the corner. He have a 10 game stretch when he tore the cover off the ball but then be go 0 for his next 5 games. If he can build some consistency and hit in the .270 range, he will move up on the prospect list. If-If-If, time to show the money.
I too am trying to temper my enthusiasm over Galvis after only 40 plate appearances. Still, I am higher on him than most, so it is hard not to get excited.
Galvis will be 21 this entire season in AA. He is 11 months younger than anyone else on the roster (Aumont is next youngest, having turned 22 in January). He is the youngest IF on the roster by a year and a half (Rivero turns 23 in late May). He is far far away from show the money time.
The wind was blowing straight out at times in Reading. JC Ramirez throwing ground balls was definitely impressive. A couple of the home runs were helped by the wind.
Rizzotti did not look comfortable at all against LH pitching.
Yeah this is a little odd. He got a lot of grounders yesterday too, I wonder if he’s throwing a sinker or something. Either way, it’s good for his confidence and all but he’ll need to start getting a few K’s too.
Or he is destined for the bullpen role he excelled in last year. The Phillies really should have moved him up last year to Clearwater as I think they wanted to keep Lakewood together for the playoffs. His stuff definitely was a little better in shorter stints last year as well.
First of all Zeid was and is projected as a reliever in the future. However, for now the idea was to get him innings and more experience which is exactly what is happening. His control hasn’t been good enough and he’s been hurt by it. He was double bumped and he’s learning what all pitchers learn in AA and that is that control really matters there. Hang in there with him.
what is going on in Lakewood? Hitting under .200 as a team is embarrassing and ridiculous. I hope some one can pull a Singleton like last season to save that offense.
Did any one else notice Reading announced on Saturday they will be hosting the 2012 Eastern League All-Star Game. Their remodeled stadium is solid and is over due for a mid-season showcase.
Impressed early with Aumont, Galvis, Pettis and Overbeck. How is Overbeck’s defense at 1st? He can hit so does the change of position give him another crack at prospect staus?
Rich Thompson seems to be playing regularly at LVIP, Maybe one of Sandberg’s guys. Also OF of Sullivan in LF, Moss in RF, usually, of maybe a platoon with few LHP’s seen. Delwyn Young and M. Miller on bench. Pinch HR for Delwyn Young in above game. Larish hitting for LVIP, may be up for a straight cash sale for some needy team at the MLB or minor level, to clear some logjam.
R-Phils- Galvis in bottom of 1st- ground single to RF, Garcia follows with ground single to RF- Galvis to 3rd. Double steal Garcia/Galvis- Galvis scores. Any more particulars on that? The can’t run thing- maybe oversold.
Rich Thompson should be playing regularly, He is very tough to keep out of the lineup the way he consistenly has played in LV. Larish, “straight up cash sale”….Marfis you never fail to provide the humor.
With Reading’s center fielders hurt and Jiwan James needing reps in Clearwater, hard to envision Thompson not playing. His defense is terrific, and that’s a spot where a veteran really helps prospects. Far easier to improve when your fly balls are caught rather than constantly falling in front of the project you’ve got.
Another good thing you can take from Biddle and Cosart is they combined for 11 innings 12 strikeouts and what I liked was only 1 walk, free passes will kill you.
Lakewood lineup through 9 innings- 18 K one short of franchise record set in ’09. Game still scoreless opposition with 1 H 2 BB’s through 8 innings. Leadoff hit in 9th.
Lakewood: Wow, 18 Ks, that’s tough to do. Remember that Barnes and Murphy are there to stablize a young lineup and both are sub 200 as well. On the good side, their pitching continues to be pretty good. Plenty of prospects are doing well while others are struggling mightily. Very interesting box score reading each day. As for the comments that Rollins won’t be back next year and Valdez will replace him, I would be stunned if that happened and find it very unlikely.
Maybe Truby needs some more hitting talent on his team as you can only work with what you have. Dugan will join Lakewood sometime and some reassignments could help the hitting.
Schlitter- returned to Cubs because he was placed on waivers without being recovered from an injury by Cubs. Waiver claim by Yankees and then by the Phillies was cancelled.

So we had a stolen base of home (Galvis) and a pitcher with a run and RBI (Stutes). Interesting Sunday indeed.

You got it Alan.

LKW- Mendez though hitless in DH, collected 3 walks, for the walks overall thing.
Lakewood is playing right now, and if you have a subscription to MiLB.com or something , you can watch it live, as it happens.
Mendez not starting, Barnes moved from 2B to 3B, Carlos Perdomo starting at 2B. Ervis Manzanillo pitching , it says.

3 inning report- 6 K’s for Lakewood offensive lineup. Manzanillo struck out Bryce Harper, maybe problem with LHP’ s early , something to look for.

5 inning report- 11 K’s for Lakewood offensive lineup. Manzanillo 1 H o R in 4 innings.

And it is finished. Hagerstown scores in bottom of 9th with sacrifice fly, win with 2 hits for game.

18 Ks by Lakewood hitters (and I use that term loosely).

Hewitt 0-3 3ks. Yep, sounds like a normal game for him.

Honestly its gotten pathetic that we’re wasting AB’s on him. Any warm body from the crowd would be better served hitting in his spot.
Can’t hit, can’t catch, can’t throw. Other than that, he’s an excellent first round pick.

Picking nits, but I actually think he can catch and throw. Not in the infield, but yes in the outfield.

Jim Murphy: 0-4, 4ks. He’s 25 years old in Low A. Put him out of his misery and call up Chris Duffy or Dugan.

Anon, shouldn’t Dugan be getting Hewitt’s AB’s at this point?

Since you asked. No.
Jim Murphy’s presence on any roster, serves no purpose. He can’t play. He didn’t get a bonus they need to try to recoup.

so at what point do u have to start looking at truby and the rest of the coaching staff?

Maybe Truby needs some more hitting talent on his team as you can only work with what you have. Dugan will join Lakewood sometime and some reassignments could help the hitting.

Also, Brian Schlitter was returned to the Cubs. I really don’t understand why but here is a link:

Interesting inning for Aumont tonight. Looks like his D let him down with three errors and Freddy Galvis got ejected. Sounds like fun.

Schlitter- returned to Cubs because he was placed on waivers without being recovered from an injury by Cubs. Waiver claim by Yankees and then by the Phillies was cancelled.
