Box Score Roundup, 14 April 2011

Not a banner night down on the farm, as the Phillies four affiliates went 1-4. The Lakewood team may never hit. Stutes gave up a run. Darkness washed over this site. But after you regain your composure, check below the fold for the rundown.

  1. I have tickets for Hagerstown home opener tomorrow and Sunday against Lakewood. Any idea what to look for besides Bryce Harper? Hopefully I get to see Biddle for one game.

    1. How about hitting coach Marlon Anderson?

Hagerstown’s prospects look somewhat barren outside of Harper. Adrian Sanchez is their #17 prospect, Jason Martinson is #22. They also have an outfielder named Michael Taylor.

  2. Look at the averages in tonight’s Lakewood boxscore. That’s pretty historic ineptitude. Who would have thought that Edgar Duran would be their best hitter at this point? I think they’ll hit eventually, but they need to get it kick-started somehow.

  3. Savery and Rizzotti at combined average of 1069. Tonights entire lakewood lineup after the game 1196. If Savery would snap out of his slump they might of had them beat.

    1. Savory is clearly really good. He is batting better than 70 over any other player in any other league. And I dont see any slowing down.

    1. It’s the minor leagues. If pitchers are losing 1-0 games, it isn’t going to impact their status. Hollands’ line for last nights loss was as good as his opening day win.

  4. Too soon to panic on May? 4IP and 4BB. Hopefully he turns it on soon but this is his second stint in clearwater.

    1. I think May is always going to be a pitcher who will have starts where he’s wild. The question is are they sporadic or are they normal? Will need to see how his next start is.

      1. Yeah he did pretty well in his first start and I think only walked 1, so its too early to think it’ll be a repeat of his last time in Clearwater.

  5. I really hope we pick up some hitters in this years draft and im not talking about highly athletic outfeilders who cant play baseball. After D.Brown graduates the only true hitter we have in our entire minor leagues is J.Singleton. After him whos next S.Valle? M.Rizzoti? J.Savery? Thats not good. Lets get some hitters into our org. Guys who can play the infield would be a plus.

  7. On the bright side, James had a really nice night and Worley was solid in his second start.

Also, Hollands seems interesting as a lefty. Anyone know what he hits on the gun?

  8. Gotta love the EL schedule maker. Reading pulls in from Manchester New Hampshire in the Iron Lung at 5:00 in the morning for the 7:00 pm home opener and are expected to be sharp and ready to play.

  9. It seems like Neris was less nervous. I had hope the Lehigh hitters wouldn’t look like a trash pile again but they do. Soon they have to move the Riz and Overbeck up just to make it look respectable at least. The people of the Lehigh Valley deserve much better.
    GO Rosie!

    1. Larish is one of the few people doing the hitting. Belliard leads the team in OPS at 3B (and granted this is after 6 games). Unless either Rizzotti or Overbeck can play short or catch, they can’t make the Ironpigs much better.

It’s early yet though, and offenses all over are struggling. The league OPS in the IL right now is .700, and the OPS in the Eastern League is a paltry .641. It is .697 in the Sally League. It is rather early to start making judgments on hitters.

        1. Yeah, I gotta disagree as well. There is no reason to have both Overbeck and Rizz on the same team. No offense to Larish, but Rizz and Beck are prospects and should be getting full time play at first so they can work on defense and maximize their value.

    1. Big Joe’s got a .429 BABIP against, which is pretty absurd. If a few more of those grounders find gloves he’ll be fine.

          1. His putrid ones have come from not pitching well when guys get on base. He’s been bad but the stats suggest that he’ll get better when he figures out his mechanical issue from the stretch.

    1. I think they said he’d be back in 4-6 weeks (or 6-8 or something like that), which seemed crazy to me. Most guys I read about who have a problem with their hamate bone take a very long time to recover back to normal.

  10. I was at Reading last night sadly. Edell was amazing for a pitcher that tops out at 83 mph. Other than him the only highlight was Kane Kalas singing the national anthem.

  11. Let’s see. 3 hits for LVIP in first game, 2 for Reading, 3 for Lakewood. Maybe some of it is weather related.

Looks like good pitching by Ryan Edell at Reading, though not remarked on much, also a somewhat competent start by Ryan Fierabend, since MLB candidates are supposed to be the currency, maybe these 2 should be rated more since they are LH’ers at the high levels of the system. Also , a save by Mike Zagurski for LVIP, 3 batters , 3 strikeouts.

Lakewood- looks like Jeremy Barnes continues at 2B, maybe that keeps up. Thought they would have stuck with Geancarlo Mendez at 3B, but they went with Steven Batts, so it could be they alternate there, and they back off Carlos Perdomo from a couple of games for perspective or he goes into bench player role.

  12. Given Freddy’s track record i’m hesitant to get on this band waggon… if he’s still over .300 by the all star break i’ll re-evaluate.

As to Savery… i don’t even know what to say at this point. What he is doing is other-worldly. The logic in me says he’ll do well enough to get bumped to AA this year and I’ll be happy if he achieves a more realistic .300 ave / .900 ops. But the phillies fan in me says he’ll hit .400 with a 1.1 ops mostly in AA, do it in the outfield and turn into a legit prospect. 🙂

  13. Just some random thoughts:

Galvis’ batting average and slugging average are the same right now. I’m hoping he improves with the bat somewhat, but I still think we’re looking at Rey Ordonez 2.0

Savery is still really freaking hot right now – he could hit .200 over his next 70abs, and still be a .320 hitter. He’s going to cool off (similar to Singleton last year) but I think he’s certainly re-earning his prospect status.

Speaking or re-earning prospect status, I’d say that Mattair is not doing such. I used to be a huge booster of his, but I don’t see him as ever amounting to much more than a .250 hitter with no power and a decent glove.

And I think I could probably get a win against Lakewood’s lineup at this point – baffling them with my knuckler and occasionally touching 55 on the radar gun (and we all know that Lakewood’s gun is slow)

  15. I think the decision to develop Joe Savery as a pitcher when he was drafted was a harder decision than many people here might remember. It was, however, one that Joe was in agreement on. That he’s adapting so well is not a surprise to me.
He will obviously be a late bloomer but I still think he’ll play in the majors at some point. Where is anybody’s guess.

    1. Yeah, Joe wpiuld not give up the dream of pitching for the longest time. I think he went a year or so too far before switching. I don’t think he’ll hit .400 (as said above somewhere). He just needs to keep staying within himself, stroking line drives, singles, gappers, down the liners, catching one good now and then for a HR.I’d like to see him mash over .340 or so in Clearwater for 2 months and then hit .300 or thereabouts at Reading. That positions him to pick up next spring training where he left off and compete for a call-up in Sept 2012, if not before. His history DHing and pinch hitting suggests he is a natural hitter (good fundamentals and hitting intuitions built in), so that he could have success as a pinch hitter. That seems like an optimistic but achievable view of his progression–if pitchers do not expose some fundamental flaw in the next month or so.

Crazy, wild, unreal projection? The next Tony Gwynn. Kidding, but he looks like that style of hitter (not saying that good). Squares up real well, lots of line drives, good patience and pitch recognition, moderate power, etc. If he can hit a consistent .290-.310 in majors, with his athleticism and above avg fielding ability (Silver Glove 1B in college), he can be a regular.

      1. Another year, another 2-week star getting the big league call next year. I would suggest slowing down a little and waiting a few months before deciding if Savery is truly a hitting prospect or not.

I saw he got caught stealing and then Alvarez came in. Santana with a few hits…Cloyd pitched well tonight as Clearwater came back…Mattair with the big hit…Reading wins…well the Riz is the Riz…double and HR…Rivero hit a HR…Cisco and Aumont pitched well in relief..oh and I see Schwimer just closed it out for Lehigh Valley 9-4.

  19. I think we all know what Rizz can do at AA now. I don’t even really look at his numbers in the boxscore anymore. If he was sent to AA because he came in out of shape, how long would you suppose they’ll keep him there? And is there any proof that that’s why he’s back in Reading?

    1. Hey, I remember a time many years ago when we had a fat guy who started out at 1B and somehow ended up in LF and we won a World Series with him as our starting LF. He turned out to be a great player for many years. If a guy can flat out hit (I am not saying that is the case with Rizzotti, but it sure likes like it may be the case), how can you NOT find a spot for him at the MLB level? If I am not mistaken, our well built LF is batting about .230 or so and sucks IMO. Obviously I’m not suggesting moving him now, I am just saying, if a guy proves that he can flat out hit, has a high OBP, and doesn’t kill you in the field, how do you NOT find a place for him. Just ask Greg Luzinski, maybe he can give him a few pointers on how to patrol LF. It’s been done before, if the Rizz keeps hitting and hitting, do it again!

  20. Let Rizzotti build up his numbers in AA. Maybe the next time he gets waived somebody will pick him up.
