Box Score Roundup, 13 April 2011

Hey everyone. The second game just started in Lakewood, there’s no way I’ll be around to post that, so we’ll have to do without. If someone wants to add it tomorrow, that would be cool, if not, we’ll, we’ll gettem next time. Some solid performances tonight, including the continued mashing from Joe Savery, Leandro Castro continuing his hot start, and Jon Pettibone turning in another great effort. Basically the Clearwater team is awesome. Box scores are below the fold.

  1. Savery’s average plummets as his slump continues.

What’s up? All of Lakewood’s regulars are below the Mendoza Line.

  2. I like that none of you people appreciate rizzotti! You guys can keep savery. pretty funny that because your past converted BUST of a 1st round pick has a good week, that you are now all best friends with him. HA! hopefully your team trades the hometown rizzotti to the mets… you guys take more things for granted then yankee fans… by the way your boy savery is still living the good life off the signing bonus your front office gave him and doesnt care where you put him as long as the checks keep coming. HA! you guys are so funny

    1. Not sure why the Mets would want to trade for Rizzotti, when they could’ve just picked him up off of waivers.

      1. The Mets front office isn’t exactly known for their excellence.

If Eddie Wade hears that the Mets are interested he will offer Pence and Delino DeShields Jr for the Rizz and Mathieson

    2. I should ask Met fans if they want to replace Ike Davis with Reading’s first baseman. I’m guessing the answer is somewhere between “no” and “hell no.”

  3. Have to like the start from Reading so far at 5-2. Hyatt starting off 2011 like he pitched last year. Could he possibly get a shot at #5 role in Philly with Kendrick and Worley (assuming Blanton gone). The team has been hitting and Aumont with the save. Knock on wood as Aumont as started strong.

    1. Aumont’s GO/AO ratio is 5. He’s gotten 11 outs. 5 are Ks, 5 are GO and 1 FO. You have to like that. It’s early… I know.

  4. The Lakewood position prospects are really struggling. D.Santana, C.Rupp, Z.Collier, A.Altherr, J.Barnes, A.Hewitt, are all hitting below .200. In fact Hewitt has the highest BA at .154. D.Santana is already piling up the SO’s with 8 in 18 AB’s. UGLY. I had higher hopes for all of them. I would like to see M.Alvarez get some more ab’s.

    1. Interesting that Santana has the 8 Ks and no BBs. He’s always been a walk machine even in Lakewood early last year. Perdomo is 0 – 10 but has not struck out. He’s getting wood on the ball.

Luckily the pitching is very strong early (not counting Manzanillo). Four of the other starters (Buchanon, Claypool, Shreve, and Hollands) have 0.00 ERAs. Biddle’s is 1.93. When the hitting comes around — I hate to talk in terms of “if” in this case– the team could be very good.

    2. Funny but hewitt was the only guy to get on base in both games yesterday. Hopefully, the Lakewood bats will warm up as the weather gets better.

      1. I think the bats will pick up. I think with all the rain they have had it is hard to get a rythem.

  5. Its only the first couple games. Im sure some of the Lakewood hitters will get hot. Really hoping Santana, Collier, Altherr pick it up and lead the team to another title. Not that wins matter but its alot more fun that way.

  6. Congrats to Hyatt for his 2nd quality start. Hope he can stretch out to at least 7 innings. Did he touch 90 plus on his FB? His change is said to be his main weapon, but he needs some giddyup to another pitch or two to make it effective.
He has been my sleeper; too early to contemplate him for vying for the #5 role…but a continuing good Reading ’11 season and maybe a move up to LV sometime in this season would secure his bona fides.

Hoping for some good games out of Blanton on the way to the trade deadline; so far we’re seeing Blanton being Blanton. Even atheists can “pray” for better results.

With all that stuff going on at 1st base in Reading and Clwtr, it seems that both teams could move both of them up a notch sometime during the season. In ‘1o Riz hit the wall at LV in ’10. Like to see him top the wall in ’11 and become trade bait to some AL team that would like a lefty with power as a DH. If only he could find a better glove at 1st base…

Will Savery meet the test to play at Reading…well? Fielding with him is no problem at 1st.

    Interesting things to watch.

Congrats to Pettibone for another quality start. What happened to all those Ks from his first start?…Just 2 tonight.

Castro going nuts. What do we have here?…IF he continues his hitting?

  8. I like what Galvis and Garcia are doing at the top of the Reading line-up. Galvis started pretty well last season and faded down the stretch. Hopefully this year he is stronger and stays consistent all year.

    2. I always thought they were too aggressive with Galvis and his promotions. Started when he was 17 and played at Williamsport instead of GCL. This is his first time repeating a level. If he can hit .270 with a little power this year he becomes an intriguing prospect. He has not shown any power yet in the regular season, but he showed up in the Spring Training reports with a little more power.

  9. Leave Free.. alone. James is going to ban him soon anyway. Let him dig his own grave.

I like varying opinions like “1986” above. He’s calling out a bunch of guys for being on the Savery bandwagon and letting Rizz waste away. It’s a valid argument. If Savery was a right-hander, he would have been hitting 2 years ago and given up pitching. Now he’s got to perform or go home. He’s been impressive but we all know that until he does it at AA or AAA consistently, he’s not going to jump into anyone’s top 10 or even 15. Rizz is intriguing but it’s hard to project him to the Phillies. He’s got 1 position (unless you throw in DH). Savery might be able to play the OF but he’s probably blocked by Howard too. We’ll see how it all plays out.

    1. I dont think anyone gave up on Rizotti. I also dont think anyone thinks Savery is a future all star in the big leagues. Its just fun to watch and talk about a guy who struggled to the probable point of being released hit his way back into low prospect status. If Galvis hits over 300 for the next couple weeks he will be the one everyone is talking about.

  12. Looking at the Lakewood Double Header.
See they moved Barnes to 2B for both games. Batts at 3B in first game (1 for 2) and G. Mendez at 3B in 2nd game (2 for 3) and now they got a player at .333. Maybe Mendez can work at 3B regular and Batts and Perdomo can be the bench IF reserves.

Perdomo at SS in 2nd game and was pinch hit for by Duran,.

Miguel Alvarez pinch hit for Collier in last AB in first game, and in the second game Alvarez played LF and Collier at DH (Hewitt RF). Still no hits for Alvarez , however.

Maybe they start to look at new line-up combinations and alignments and such.

  13. Lot’s to be interested in both good and bad however its early and the sample sizes are small. I can’t put any stock in these batting averages until maybe June. Have to agree on Rizz (as mentioned above) he cleared waivers so no one made a mistake on his evaluation as a prospect.

The only thing I do question with him is why he started at Reading and not Lehigh.

  14. It’s early on Galvis…. way early… but he’s off to a decent start. What’s the bar for him this year? What level of production would we need to see from him before his stock really takes off?

    Like

    1. Really takes off is a relative term, but for me, if he can hit around .280 with an .OBP in the .340 range with his defensive abilities he becomes a prospect with a legitimate chance to become an everyday major league shortstop.

Since I doubt he ever shows much power and he doesn’t have elite speed, he needs to be able to get on base and handle the bat (bunt, hit-run, etc.) to become an every-day option.

  15. I agree with the assessment on Savery that if he were a righty he would have had a bat in his hand years ago. Our pitching looks to have gotten off to a real nice start, no pun intended, which has not historically been the case? I know it’s early, but definitely good to see they young arms come out firing. Especially for a guy like Aumount who might need the confidence boost at this point in his career.

  16. I definitely had Pettibone much higher on my prospect list than most after I watched him pitch late last season. Its early of course but he had two very good starts to begin the season. Any word on who gets Colvin’s next start? Someone from the bullpen, promote Shreve, or is Hernandez or Way healthy enough to start? Castro has always been a terrific hitter. His problem in the past is that he swings at bad pitches and gets himelf out. He can be a major league hitter if he can stay disciplined. Could Galvis be for real, hitting over .300?? He did look different to me and to others in spring training with a bit more muscle and purpose to his swing. If he keeps it up, I’ll be the first one to say I didn’t know he had it in him. I just saw a posting from yesterday from someone at EST who said that Dugan has only been playing OF. If true, and I assume it is, that means he was passed by all the OFers on the L Wood roster.

    1. I saw Galvis in one ST game. He took an easy swing and nearly popped the ball out of the park. I saw him at the tail end of the season 2 years ago and he had 2 hits that dribbled through the infield hitting rocks and twigs along the way. Definately the kids grown up some. He’s so young that he barely shaves. I think he can finally legally have a beer.

  17. Not surprised that Hyatt remains one of the most consistent pitchers in the organization with a 2-0 record and 1.80 ERA start. I guess his age is no longer a problem ? If he continues his success , I see him with the big club as a middle reliever in 2 yrs .

    Like

    1. He turns 25 next month and this is his first season in AA. His age is still an issue. However, like Diane Lane, age is only a number and if he can continue to get people out at a good rate in the minors he will get a chance in the majors at some point. Go Austin!

    1. Who knows what her opinion really is but it appears that Halladay, Lee, and a few other players don’t agree with that assessment since they specifically stated that they WANTED to be in Philly even with other options available.

Most players leave in the off-season because they have homes elsewhere. Many live in Florida (no state income tax might have something to do with that).

  19. IT’s funny how people will spin around a story, Most leave for tax reason? yes they want to play for a winner, but we don’t know there real feelings? unless your a mind reader. I kind of think she is referring to constant bothering by people when they are out. i worked in restaurants and a lot of people are ignorant. bothering them when they are trying to have dinner. but that is a guess by me. I know one thing as much as I like philly, wouldnt mind leaving in the winter for warmer weather myself. Just wondering how the fans will react to this story.

    Like

    1. Intelligent fans know that Madson doesn’t hate Philly, otherwise he wouldn’t be in Phillly. He signed a contract that kept him in Philly beyond team control. No player that really hates a city would do that.

She may hate Philly, but that has absolutely nothing to do with why they leave Philly in the winter. Every active player worth a damn goes to warm weather climates to work out.

    2. its funny how people are unable to comprehend comments. I believe the comment was the most leave because they have homes elsewhere. But if you think professional athletes don’t take into consideration the tax structures of the states where they choose to declare their primary residence you’re mistaken.

I believe it was estimated that Lebron James will save about $25m over the term of his contract by choosing to play for Miami rather than NY. Don’t you think his agent and/or the Miami Heat pointed this out during negotiations?
