  2. If you click on the boxscore it comes up as a good size. No need to delete, people just need to click each image which only takes an extra 3 seconds.

  3. 10 for 12 is just ridiculous. I’d like to see Savery stick in Clearwater at least 6-8 weeks. Give him at bats, give the league a chance to get a book on him and see how he responds.

  4. So who’s job is under assault? If Savery forces his way to Reading in a month, that means he will force Overbeck or Rizzotti up to LV. That would send Bozied, or one of those two, to the bench.

    1. Speculation is that he might be able to play LF, which means Spidale’s job might be the one in jeopardy (which wouldn’t hurt my feelings).

    2. If Savery continues to hit like Singleton hit last year, Overbeck and Bozied are non-factors. Those two will not be in the same prospect level as Savery and will have to find their ABs as they can. Rizz still has a chance to hit and have some value despite reporting out of shape. So they will need to juggle Savery and Rizz for ABs. Overbeck can get ABs at 3B. To me Bozied needs to be in AAA. He is a masher and could help Phils at some point if they can find the right role for him. For all these reasons, I think Savery stays in A+ for at least two months. They will look for an injury or promotion situation to move people up while minimizing impact on other hitters’ ABs.

        Ya think?

Right now Rizzotti is a better hitter than James Loney.

Who is going to play 1B for St. Louis next year after Pujols leaves? In Milwaukee after Fielder signs with the Nats? Tampa couldn’t use an .850 OPS bat at 1B or DH who makes the minimum? There are a pile of other teams that could be listed.

        1. The Phillies left Rizzotti unprotected and none of those teams claimed him. If those teams thought he was a possible replacement (for the likes of Fielder and Pujols) as a starting 1B, it would seem that they would have found a spot on their 40 man for him.

          1. On a semi-related note, what kind of numbers does Rizzotti need to put up to get people to believe he’s a “real” prospect? Thanks.

            1. Has ANYONE connected with the organization said he’s come to camp out of shape or is that just your personal opinion? I saw him in spring training. To me, he didn’t look more or less out of shape than he’s always looked.

            1. It’s called irrevocable waivers, genius. Any team could have claimed Rizzotti for 20k (or less than half of what the Phillies paid to get Michael Martinez).
Seems that Milwaukee would have paid that amount and released the worst player on their 40 man roster to make space, if Rizzotti had the value you believe.
Think about it. The Brewers claimed Jesus Sanchez from the Phillies when he was removed from the 40 man, but they ignored Matt Rizzotti.

            2. Well, all you can do is shake your head in wonder then.

How does Johan Santana become a Rule 5? Dan Uggla? And the Marlins could have had Santana too but made a deal with the Twins to let them have him!

              Boggles the mind.

Now we have Mike Rizzotti, sitting there for anyone to grab and they don’t

Great future trivia question for Wheels.

            3. It only boggles the mind if you believe a 25 year old AA 1B, who has never hit 18 HRs, is a uber prospect.

        2. That’s not the most ridiculous think I’ve ever heard or anything.

I doubt any of those teams would want the great Matt Rizzotti and there is no way in hell Rizzotti would post an .850 OPS in the Majors over the course of a full season. He’s a 25 year old repeating AA.

          1. So if no team would ever want him, and he’s not a real prospect, what’s the point of him being in our organization?

            1. Mayberry Jr is actually a good defensive OF at all 3 OF positions. Rizzotti is a poor defensive 1B.

You do get that there’s a difference there, right?

      2. Parent was praising Overbeck’s work at first base today. Think they finally realize if Cody is going to make it to the final level it won’t be at third base. Savery is hitting the ball all over the field if you read where his hits have gone so far. They let Rizzo have a little over 100 at bats at Clearwater before they moved him to Reading last year. I suspect they will let Savery do the same this year before moving him.

  5. Considering Savery played LF at Rice, shouldn’t be that crazy to see him try LF at this point, even if in the middle of the season.

  6. Only saw a few innings of the Clearwater game, Colvin left after really struggling in the second. Couldn’t tell if there was an injury but you can see video of that last inning at “Threshers 4” on youtube.

    1. Maybe they didn’t like what they saw mechanics wise and pulled him. They’ve been known to do that before with top arms when they’re struggling early.

      Hopefully that all it was.

  7. It looks like Lehigh Valley could use Rizzotti, they used Frandsen at 1b today. I think they are taking this obsession with stocking 2nd basemen because of Utley too far and really hurting their offense. Today they played Frandsen, Barfield, Belliard and Hudson in the infield, all middle infielders who hit like middle infielders. They need to make a decision on these guys and then get Rizzotti and Bozied in the line-up together for some offense.

  8. The Phillies must be really high on Chris Kissock, last year they sent him to the Arizona Fall league and this year put him in the Reading rotation bumping out Mike Cisco. Well Kissock got off to a nice start by throwing what appears to be 6 solid if not spectacular innings in today’s Reading loss. Maybe he’s a late bloomer. Poor Jesse Biddle, first his opening start gets postponed and today, scheduled to go in game 2 the 1st game is in the 15th inning. He must think he’ll never get to pitch!

  9. Where, someone tell me where the rumor that Rizzotti came in out of shape to camp?

I don’t care for the guy, but if you guys are starting false rumor, it ain’t helpful.

      1. The article doesn’t say what you are asserting it says. It says he was sent to Reading because “The Phillies’ brass felt there weren’t enough at-bats for him at Lehigh Valley, where Tagg Bozied, who begins the season on the disabled list, and Jeff Larish will see time at first base.”

Now, they also say Rizzotti needs to work on his defense and getting in better shape, but no where does it say he was sent down because he was out of shape. In fact, it gives a specific reason he was sent to Reading, and it ain’t his shape.

  10. Look, this guy (Rizz) has one job and there is really only one thing he has to do in the off season – work out. This organization obviously can’t use him right now at 1B so he has two options – First, put himself in a situation where maybe he could play LF. Second, come in to camp and kick as* to the point that other teams want him or an injury to Howard leads to a chance for him.

The fact that it is not OBVIOUS to everyone that he worked his as* off all off season says enough to me. I don’t care if the people saying he’s out of shape are right or wrong. What’s wrong is that he didn’t come in to camp in the best shape of his life and it being noticeable to everyone, particularly other teams’ scouts.

    1. Yeah, I have to say that I agree. Not coming into camp in fantastic shape in what clearly was the most important offseason of his career is puzzling and slightly disturbing. If he were my kid, the conversation would begin with the words “listen, dumb ass . . . ”

And don’t get me wrong, I like Matt Rizzotti a lot, but still . . .

      Like

  11. I see the main issue with Rizzotti is that his best case is an slightly below average fielding 1B. So in order to get a full time job he needs to hit at an extremely high level or have a team face multiple injuries.

In my opinion his outstanding Reading season showed he could hit for power and average. (He was hurt at AAA and hit well in AZ Fall also.) He was a college kid (senior I think) so he would be a bit older than other prospects. And he was not a bad hitter (still good walk rate) in previous seasons. I felt I could make an argument that he finally ‘got it’, though I figured his chances of reaching his 2010 seasonal stat line would be 10%. For me that was enough to rank him in the Top30.

To answer the question as to what he would need to do be valuable prospect: near 1.000 OPS at AAA. With .900 I could see him being a useful Sept pinch hitter type. But his lack of positional flexibility really hurts him as a bench player. I beleive that is why no team picked him from waivers.
