  1. I voted Leandro Castro this time. I know a lot of evaluators have him a lot higher, but he really didn’t have that good a 2010 offensively, especially for a guy who’s limited to corner OF. A good chance to rebound with the bat in 2011.

  2. Age aside. I’ve got Mathieson’s back here. ROY eligible, I expect him to have an impact in the big leagues this season, in Philadelphia or Houston (sorry, Ed Wade, I couldn’t help take a jab). Mathieson has been forced to reinvent himself as a reliever and aside from Jonathan Abaladejo was the most dominant closer in the IL last season.

  3. Castro, since he was my original #19.
I’m beginning to think I may have under rated Cameron Rupp, by leaving him off my original, personal, top 30. I think I compared him too his teammate J Lanning, which was unfair. Rupp showed patience and power. Over 10% walk rate and 50% of his hits were for extra bases. If he hadn’t made like 6 errors the first 3 or 4 games of the season, his d line wouldn’t look so bad.

  4. In other news according to baseballamerica the phillies have finally released Mike Durant and Mauricio Romero.

    1. It seems like Durant sucked but Romero actually had pretty good numbers when he played. Why hasn’t he played in such a long time?

  5. Voted Rupp – When he and Eldemire light it up this year, it will be nice to read all of those posts saying, “Wow, Jeff nailed that one.” Conversely, if I’m wrong, I guess I’ll have to read a bunch of posts saying, “What a moron!” Regardless, I stand by my choice.

  6. Mathieson is on this list & is ROY eligible, but what about Bastardo? He was around top ten on PP, Readers & BA lists last yr., but not even on listed as a choice this yr.? Not rookie eligible? Was this discussed before? I probably missed it. Please advise…

      1. I believe that Bastardo was on the Phillies roster for most of the year (when he wasn’t injured). ROY eligibility I believe is 45 days on the major league roster. He had 25 appearances last year, which is more than I thought

  7. Going for Rupp here. Gotta like what he brings to the table as a catcher assuming the scouting reports have been accurate.

  8. Garner.

Castro doesn’t have a shot to play corner OF in the big leagues IMHO. He’s a nice minor league body, that’s about it. He’s 5’11”, maybe 180 lbs. He’s really not patient at all. His OPS ceiling is probably around 800, and he’ll need about 900 OPS points to catch someone’s eye at his size and given his average-at-best defense.

With Rupp, Garner, Franco, Alvarez, Pettis and Way still on the board, I can’t see voting him in the top 30.

Look at it this way–Alvarez plays the same position, is a much better defender, and just posted a +800 OPS in WMPT which included a .329 BA (although he needs to learn the strike zone, too). He looks like a much better prospect than Castro, and almost no one’s voting for him.

    1. I don’t get why no one is voting for Alvarez. I have him at #21 above Rizzotti, Hyatt, Garcia, Schwimer, Zeid, and Shreve.

    2. Agreed, Alvarez belongs on any list of the top 30 prospects. But so does Castillo. Caution against dismissing him because of his off-year in 2010. The year before, at a youthful 19, he had an OBP of about 870 playing just about every game for Williamsport. He makes good contact, has a good arm, runs well, has 20 HR, 30 SB potential..and this assessment of his defensive skills is probably far too negative.

What I find most surprising is the absence of Lendy Castillo from this list–especially when guys like Shreve, Zeid, Schwimmer, Stutes, Way, Garner are on the list or potential additions for the last few slots. After the brief period of normal transition to pitching, Castillo was simply dominant. IMO he will be the closer for either Clearwater or Lakewood (maybe for the latter first, then high A) in 2011. The other strange omission is Ebelin Lugo, who I guess will be a crucial part of the Reading bullpen before the season is over.

I understand that the fan base naturally has less familiarity with the Latin players in the Class A & short season/rookie leagues (see the criticisms & doubts expressed on the forums when young Cesar Hernandez, the next Phillies 2B, was added to the 40 man roster–or how little recognition he got in this poll. Or compare the voting here to that for the much hyped Santana, basically because of the scale of the bonus money paid out).

    3. Castro outperformed Alvarez in WMPT when he was a year younger.

Castro at 19 in WMPT: .316/.351/.512
Alvarez at 20 in WMPT: .326/.358/.450

I think Castro is a much better prospect than Alvarez.

  9. I went with Rupp…but I’m shocked that Castro has dropped like this.

Its a tribute to our solid system.

  10. Speaking of under-appreciated Latin-American pitchers in our system, here’s a guy who may not be top 30-40 now but could be a sleeper next season:

    RHP Juary Gomez
30 IP, mostly at GCL, but had a .60 ERA, 30Ks, and a .165 average against as a 20 year old. Probably not a big prospect, but it’s refreshing to see nice numbers like that in a system where we obviously have a lot of depth hidden beneath the surface.

    1. Slasher, he was almost my main sleeper choice this year, but then I realized he was 20 in the GCL and he was a reliever. That’s not usually the profile of someone to get excited about.

  11. Voted for Cody Overbeck. I know he’s old and not consistent and a not the best fielder, but for some reason I like what he did last year at Clearwater.

Also I as long as the list of candidates is so large now can Jeremy Barnes be added.

  12. Castro and Alvarez are similar offensively, and have been the same age at GCL and WMPT. The big difference I see is that Castro is a singles hitter at a power position (LF) and Alvarez will likely be able to stay in CF. The offensive production were talking about plays much better in CF than it does in Left.

  13. One of the guys I want to keep an eye on in the minor league camp in March is leftfielder Geancarlo Mendez. He led the GCL in rbi’s and was third in slugging playing a key role in the GCL Phils winning the championship last year.
