  1. I voted for Miguel Alvarez. He will be starting at Lakewood next year and I think he can hit over .300 again and move up on the prospect list to around top #15 maybe even top #10. I currently have him as #21 on my list and I have a feeling I will be voting for him until this is over.

    1. Are you sure that he’ll be starting? It will depend on what happens with Eldemire, Dugan, Collier, and Santana who are all arguagly higher rated prsopects in the Phillies’ eyes. We know that Hewitt will be there.

      1. I agree with Brandon.
I have Alvarez in LF, Altherr in CF and Eldemire in RF. I have Hewitt as 4th OF, and Santana and Collier in Extended spring. Dugan and Duffy as 1B/DH.

      1. 3 in the top 51. Not bad considering all the talent we’ve traded away in the last two years. The guy noone talks about that I think we’ll miss the most is Knapp and not Drabek. Ridiculous strikeout numbers.

On the top 50 show John Hart said Drabek projects as a 3 or a 4, I was surprised with such a poor projection for such a highly ranked prospect.

  2. I think Castro makes the most sense here, but would not be disappointed with any of Zeid, Garner, or Walter. I think Nunez should be in this group too.

    OTHER: Miguel Nunez

    1. On second thought, I did place Collier #30 in my personal top 30, but behind Castro, Zeid, and Mathieson.

      Like

  3. Garner then Castro. Zeid is nice, but he is still far away and, it would seem, being tracked for the pen. I have to wonder what distinguishes him from Mathieson in that regard. Mathieson has shown potential at higher levels of play than Zeid. Is it just the question about eligibility? He’s on the poll here and is considered a prospect, though he’s not technically a rookie. That’s a rule for an award (and possibly for union purposes to distinguish him from true first year guys – don’t know on that score), and has nothing to do with his status as a prospect.

  4. went with Garner again for the 4th time. Also in the consideration for me are Eldemire, Walther, Pointer, Franco, Nunez

As you can see im a big proponent of filling out the list with potential instead of established mediocrity.

  5. Other: Darin Ruf
He did enough to see his name in print. I suspect a big year coming to complicate the first base picture even more.

    1. I was wondering when Ruf would get mentioned. At 23 he was old for Lakewood and Clearwater but he ate them up. He finished 4th of all Phillie minor leaguers in Total Bases. Only Overbeck, Rizz and Bozied had more. He’s a guy that Philly has no room for because he plays 1st base. I think he should open the season in Reading. Let’s see what he has.

Another productive guy who we don’t talk about much is Steve Susdorf. He’s a lot like Jeremy Slayden. With Jeremy we would say, he’ll never play in the majors but he’s a great professional and provides leadership and maturity. There are minor league roster spots for guys like this. Susdorf and Ruf just aren’t top 30 prospects.

      1. Ruf will most likely start the year back in Clearwater with Savery playing 1st at Reading. i read some comments from him that he expected to start back there but hoped to finish at Reading which is reasonable. Its just so hard to be a 1st base propect unless you hit with power which Huf doesn’t do.

        Like

      2. Ruf didn’t get enough ABs at Lakewood to merit a double jump to Reading. Bozied, Savery or Overbeck will play 1B at Reading.

  6. Voting for Galvis again because… what? He got picked?…… uhhhh, umm, hrrr uhhhhhhhhhhhh Cameron Rupp? Sounds good. Carmeron Rupp. A catcher with some power potential who’s solid defensively. He slightly edges out Walter and Garner for me.

  7. I can’t believe more people aren’t voting for Matt Way. Kid is a beast and should start the year in Clearwater and possibly end in Reading. Back spasms kept him from dominating Clearwater and landing on the DL.

    Like

    1. Agree Way is underrated. As I said before, guys who don’t have the big arms seem to get over looked. I have Way at about 20.

      Like

    2. Way is a bit older so I actually think he’s going to be the primary beneficiary of losing Sanchez. I think he could be the #5 starter at Reading to start the year. Unfortunately, he’s a slow tosser and needs to be perfect to be good. We’ll see.

  8. After some consideration, I am going to vote for Garner. The potential is enough to nudge him slightly ahead of Zeid and Stutes, both of whom will end up being major league pitchers.

  9. Castro again, he’s definitely the best player left although others are good also and some could be better than good but we just don’t know yet.

  10. castro!
zeid has put up good numbers but he was a 23 year old in A-. Dont see why he should be top 30… Definitely not above Castro. Or the 2010 picks such as Poynter, Perci, Walter, Rupp

  11. Regarding the rankings of our players globally, the fact that cosart was 51 lends to a really nice set next year. I suspect if last years stars can continue with that this year, we could have as many as 4 top 50 players (not including DB). Colvin Cosart Singleton May. Though I think May may have a difficult time making the top 50 due to his demotion this past year and his age. While his numbers in repeating lakewood look artifically equal, the fact is his command improved significantly (or is it control… i don’t remember which is which, but he walked half as many batters per 9). This will be a big test for him this year in A+ as his previous failures there lead to concern.

I think the likely result will be 3 players making the top 50, and 4-5 in the top 100. That would be awesome.

    1. Young guys with big upside like Biddle or Santana or even Gillies can quickly jump into that top 50-100 with a big year. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if one of them had a big breakout.

  12. I vote Cameron Rupp. (I say only remaining position player capable of a starting role)

The remaining pitchers at this point are consisting of the non-descipt, the quickly advancing to minor league veteran types, those with no professional experience to speak of, and the usual assortment of the sick, lame, and lazy and/or crazy.
Except for an oversight, so if there is still time:

OTHER: Ervis Manzanillo (looking for somebody to vote for, compare and contrast to Jesse Biddle, what is the slam dunk sure thing that says he can’t be as good ? ERA? Pfffft.

Shall now depart from upbeat, positive message, to issue some “on the other hands” to assorted remaining denizens of the candidates.

Leandro Castro/Miguel Alvarez- I shall vote these guys in in a couple of spots, but really they should be voted in in tandem because they are the same guy. The same model re-issued a couple of years later. To reproduce their minor league production they would need to gain status as MLB starters, But, I say they may grow to 4th OF status, because though they do everything sort of well, they don’t do anything well enough to gain MLB starter status.

Joshua Zeid- It is odd that some will decry the tendency of some to cast aside promising younger players in favor of more advanced in age type who did well against LO-A competition, and then announce plans to vote in Zeid who is 24 or so, just coming out of LO-A , and touted by many, and by implication team personnel, as a relief pitcher, after downgrading the status of relievers, starting with DeFratus.

Nicholas Hernandez- yeah, nice stats before injury, but did get injured with reported tear in throwing shoulder, which few regain effectiveness after, and after returning from said injury, pitched only scantly and to little effect, so return to effectiveness a question mark.

Eric Pettis- see above under nondescript.

Zach Collier- did not play at all last season due to injury, and played with substandard output the season before. If you’re counting that’s 2 seasons without effective play or a good rythm. C’MON MAN.

Ebelin Lugo- yeah, maybe,, but has been basically a minor league middle reliever so far.

Michael Stutes- see above under nondescript.

Gauntlett Eldemire- did not play the entire last season due to injury, and has not actually appeared in a professional game. C’MON MAN.

As to others above who though having made a token appearance, it is really not much to speak of,, I think not.

  13. Came off Eldmire for now and went Castro. That MLB top 50 is a joke they had Sale at 25? That kids stuff is every bit as good as Chapman’s and demostrated at the MLB level with better command.

Brown at 4 is a bit generous considering Drabek is sitting at 12. Not for nothing but if a guy got a call up and finsihed the year out on his big club he shouldn’t even be in that list. I’m talking about guys like Hellickson, Sale, Chapman, Freeman etc…I would move these guys into a rookie class.

Wondering what you guys think. I think a prospect list should be exclusive to guys with no significant Games, ABS, or Innings at the MLB level.

    1. I actually don’t agree with you. Here’s why… injury replacements. Sometimes a team will prematurely call up a player, only to send him back down (which would have happened with brown had rosters not expanded to include him without penalty), and further, september callups rarely get ample playing time to justify calling them non-rookies. I understand why MLB does rookie eligibility the way it does and am actually quite happy with it. In light of that fact that there is a possibility brown will start the year in AAA, AND he’s rookie eligible, he deserves to be included in all top prospect lists.

      Like

    2. Drabek was a Sept callup during expanded rosters…

If you’ll recall, Dom Brown was called up even earlier than that and is obviously still on the list too.

  14. Darin Ruf- Ruf did not have enough AB’s in Lakewood because he was promoted to Clearwater at mid-season and did well there, so he would not be double jumped to Reading at all, and he should play at Reading and alternate from 1B to DH with Savery. And that is where he should go, because I look for Michael Durant and James Murphy to be out by the end of Spring Training, and there will really be no other options there, and Steven Batts should start in Clearwater, and they will have alot of options at Lakewood.

    Like

    1. Durant has been released but they should give big Jim Murphy some work at third base in the minor league camp. His bat has some pop. He looked OK in a game he played third with Clearwater in the final week of last season.

  15. Just wanted to add that Keith Law, the noted Phillie pharm system detractor, just released his MLB minor league system evaluations and the Phillies came in…5th! He extolled the virtues of Lakewood and felt the Phils system was quite deep, especially in the lower minors.

This tends to justify the belief that this system arguably has about 50 prospects that could easily make a Top 30 list, as this interesting current debate does show. I also find this interesting…many suggested that the Phils got “nothing” in the deal for Cliff Lee. That was the exact word. There were some of us who felt that Amaro did quite well in bringing back 3 prospects.

Now, if this list means anything, 3 of the top 16 prospects in a system that Law considers the 5th best in baseball made the list. I find that very impressive and also suspect that Gillies will move up even more this year.

Not too bad on both counts…the deal for Lee and Law’s present comments.

  16. Almost 4 years ago to the day Law ranked us 29th. We’ve come a long way in 4 years and traded a lot of talent away to improve the big club. This is truly the golden age!

    1. I attribute the system’s improvement directly to the popularity of this site and how it takes the system to task. 🙂

  18. KLaw ranks us 5th and we don’t even have a SS or 3B propsect on the list other than Galvis at #25. The reality is we have lots of pitchers and they won’t all make the majors and they certainly won’t make it at the same time. I fully expect that one of our big three minor league pitchers will get traded for a SS or 3B in the next year. Hopefully, Dom wins the RF job and we handle LF in a year from within or with a cheap FA while we wait for someone from within. But either the SS or 3B will have to come from a trade while the other maybe comes from a FA (but not both, too expensive).

    1. I think that Ibanez plays this year, then next year, they can sign a cheap free agent to play or maybe gillies if he starts doing good again. than after that, maybe singleton will be ready if he keeps hitting.

      Like

      1. I suspect the replace Ibanez Cheaply from internally.

Gillies, Francisco (Brown will be FT in RF by then), or even Mayberry. But It could be a very cheap RF.

With Lee’s Contract jumping a huge amount in 2012, they will need to save somewhere and Ibby’s contract is the most likely place unless Ozzie opts out and we can’t resign him.

My guess, however, is that Gillies does indeed turn it around and will be out there in 2012 to some degree.
