In order to make room on the 40 man roster for the re-signed JC Romero, the Phils have designated 26 year old LHP Sergio Escalona for assignment. After showing promise in the 2009 season during which Escalona saw some time with the big club, Escalona struggled in 2010 after his demotion to Reading to begin the season. The Venezuelan native was 4-8 in 50 appearances for the RPhils with 10 saves in his 54.1 innings of work. He walked 22 and struck out 53 in his 54.1 innings, completing the year with a WHIP of 1.25.

Quite Surprised he was the choice to go.

I wasn’t terribly surprised. The Phillies imported a TON of lefty relief depth including Juan Perez, Ryan Feireabend and Dan Meyer. Escalona was obviously expendable.

Saw this coming for a while, although i’m not sure if it was the right move or not.

I would have thought Zagurski would have gone before Escalona

I thought that he was clearly the worst player on the 40 man roster. I doubt a team claims him.

I could see Escalona getting claimed. A team doesn’t have to carry him on their MLB roster or anything.

I don’t know where to put this – the Phillies sent cash to Seattle to complete the Mike Sweeney deal.

Well, a big pile of money in the batter’s box can’t possibly be less effective a hitter than Ken Griffey Jr. last season. Good trade.

Does anyone know what happened to that guy that was sent to Clearwater from the GCL as a filler and actually did good? I remember it happening last year but I forget his name and can’t find him on any rosters.

I just remembered that the guy I was thinking of was Carlos Perdomo. What happened to him? He isn’t on any of the rosters in the phillies organization.

Rosters aren’t of any significance right now, they’re not updated during the offseason and they don’t really matter anyway. Perdomo though hit .237 without an extra base hit, not terribly noteworthy. But unless he’s hit a transaction log, he’s still in the organization.

Not surprised. It’s unlikely that Escalona will ever amount to anything and, if he does, it would take enormous changes which would take years to come to fruition. They had no place for him so this move was not surprising in the least.

I think the two Drews (Carpenter and Naylor) are just as deserving of losing their 40-man spots as Escalona was but cutting him makes the most sense given the amount of lefties they’ve signed (as noted already here).

Carlos Perdomo played for the Phillies entry in LigaParalela.

There may be some new signings on there, one for sure is Jair Morelos,OF from Colombia. I have Perdomo on the Clearwater roster, if he does not appear there on the MiLB.com version it is because he was de-activated for the playoffs in favor of another player. Still around.
If a player is claimed on waivers from another team’s 40 man roster they go on that team’s 40 man roster and to send them to minors they must go through waivers again.

Another new Venezuelan signing I suspect is P Maunure Martinez as one of his sites shows him in PHILA uniform.

Maunure? I’ve heard he is the absolute s**t.

But he comes from a very fertile prospect region.

Marfis,
Isn’t there a difference if they need to add someone to the 40 man? I thought if they cleared waivers they don’t have to placed on the 40 man. I think that is what happened with Flande and Sanchez. Now if the team claimed them during the waiver period then yes that team needs to place that player on the 40 man. Like the Phils did with Carlos Rivero. They claimed him while on waivers and now he is on the 40 man.

Maunure? I heard he stinks.

Not really a loss. He basically had his chance to impress and didn’t do so.

I don’t think Drew Carpenter has done enough to warrant holding on to his roster spot, but Andrew Naylor deserves a little more slack, considering that he’s an Aussie and he hasn’t been playing Baseball as long as some others have, even when you consider that he’s getting older.

I believe that Flande and Sanchez were simply released, but it says Escalona was designated for assignment. Designated for Assignment, the meaning of which I get from Cot’s glossary, is first they must pass through waivers and if claimed like that they go on the 40 man roster. If not claimed he can be traded or released. If released he is then a free agent and can sign for what he gets, and if it’s a minor league contract , he can go to minors.
As for P Martinez, you can look at the paralela stats, I believe his first name might actually be spelled : Manaure, I think he’s on facebook or something.

I THINK Escalona could possibly be traded before he clears waivers. I’m not really clear on that.

Escalona won’t be back. He’s been passed by many pitchers and I was surprised he was kept over Sanchez. Doesn’t matter now….

Looks like Eddy Wade gave us Albert Cartwright for Escalona. A 2nd baseman who put up .294/.355/.472 in A/AA last year.

That Cartwright kid doesn’t have bad numbers either. Glad we got something out of escalona.

Cartwright isonly 23 and he did hit well in A+ before being over matched in AA. Looks like a lot of errors. Anyone know his range?

SBNation (Astros) had Cartwright listed @ 22 in the “Top 30” Compilation of 5 contributors(?) on that site. Graded C back in September 2010. Not sure of qualifications of these contributors??
