Seven More Invites to Major League Spring Training

Seven more players were invited to the Phils major league spring training camp the Phils announced today.  In alphabetical order, Pitcher Brian Bass, Catcher Tuffy Gosewisch, C Joel Naughton, INF Robb Quinlan, RHP Michael Schwimer, RHP Mike Stutes, and INF/OF Delwyn Young all received invites.

Delwyn Young is an interesting name to add to the mix as the 28 year old finished third in major league baseball with 16 pinch hits in 2010.  During his major league career, Young is a .258 hitter with 17 HR and 81 RBI in parts of five seasons between the Pirates and the Dodgers. He started games at 3B, 2B and in the OF for Pittsburgh last year.

  1. i actually said this in other topic…sorry for jumping the gun but i love the delwyn young invite….i think he will battle mike martinez and josh barfield for the last bench spot…i think bench looks like schneider, gload, valdez, mayberry and one of the other 3…this will get brown plenty of time to get used to playing everday again…i see no need to rush him unless either ibanez or fransico totally stinks it up…also i dont want durbin although i think he has done well but i want a young guy in there…cant wait for season!

  2. I like the Young signing. Also, the Romero deal is a one year deal for $1.35 million. I think that is a good signing.

  3. With the Romero signing becoming official, that puts the 40-man roster at 41. Who will be the odd man out?

  4. Is Lastings available or has he signed? Kind of surprised he hasn’t signed by now, or that the Phils don’t have more interest…

  5. I would think the odd man out is going to be one of these:

    Brian Bocock
    Sergio Escalona
    Drew Naylor

    My guess would be Escalona.

  6. Young could be an interesting extra bench player if the team decides to only go with 11 pitchers (and thus 6 bench players).

Schneider, Valdez, Gload, Francisco, Mayberry, Young (assuming Brown and Ibanez start). There are still offensive questions in the outfield, but the added flexibility of another bat would be good, especially if we are essentially platooning at two outfield positions (Francisco definitely, Mayberry once a week for Ibanez).

Resting Jimmy, Placido and Chase once a week especially early in the year would probably be a good thing and Valdez is better getting 200 AB than 400. If the top 4 starters are healthy we do not need as many bullpen pitchers.

  7. Young is an okay choice for an invitation due to hit pinch hit and position flexibility. He seems like an okay 25th man but appears to do nothing well enough to fill in as a starter. I am guessing that he has an ‘out’ clause if not on the roster by a certain date.

Not sure how many of the other invitees have signed full season minor league deals but with Valdez as the middle infielder backup I think the Phillies can choose any type of player for their last bench spot.
I only see one open spot open. C = Schnieder, PH = Gload, INF = Valdez, OF = Brown/Mayberry (Francisco as starter since he will definitely be on the roster)
Other/PH = Young, Quinlan, Larish, Martinez, Barfield

  8. Martinez can hit from the right side and plays 6 positions. Orr is lefty, Phillies need righties, and plays 2b, 3b, and the corner outfield spots. I thnk the Phils like Martinez because he can play CF if they need to give Victorino a rest. I do like some of the invites to camp like Barfield, Orr, Larish, Moss, Quinlan, and now Young.
