LHP Yohan Flande signed a minor league deal with Atlanta yesterday that came with an invite to Spring Training. The 24 year old Dominican native was a member of the Phils 40 man roster until he was recently removed to clear space for the Rule 5 draft. The Phils were hoping to resign Flande who went 10-8 with a 4.38 ERA in 27 starts for AA Reading last year. Flande’s career in the Phils organization stalled in AA after seeing a good deal of success of High A Clearwater. Over two seasons, FLande made 40 starts in AA and went 14-12 with a 4.44 ERA. His WHIP stood at 1.42.

The test he had to pass was to see if his fastball could break a pane of glass.

Now that Yohan is officially out no need to hold a spot on the top 30 list. Maybe the organization did not rate him that high. Since the Braves signed to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training, suppose not really release worthy either, as had been claimed. The Jesus Sanchez disposition awaits.

The ST invite was the incentive for him to sign with the Braves. No doubt he will be sent to the Minor league camp within the first couple of weeks.
He has shown himself to be a solid, unspectacular AA pitcher without a pitch in his arsenal that indicates the ability to advance much further.

I love Flande. It’s the perfect mix of jello and pudding.

His numbers don’t look spectacular. No harm done. He was bad in winter ball this year too.

… so my guess is he eventually comes back and kills us at some point as a LOOGY. Nothing special in his repertoire right now that suggests he can, but it just seems to be the way it will turn out.

I had Flande outside my top 30. He’s probably closer to Fabio Castro in ability than a real prospect. A 4.8 K/9 in AA at the age of 24 certainly isn’t worth getting excited about.

“And here’s the pitch….swing and a miss, struck him out! That’s strikeout number 17 for the young lefty phenom Johan Flande. The Phillies have been baffled by his repertoire all night. Flande is perfect through 8 and 2/3 innings. Veteran second baseman Chase Utley will be the Phillies final shot to break up what has been a historic performance here at Turner Field.”

The guy has Hall of Fame written all over him. Perhaps they can trade Oswalt and Lee for his rights.

@Nepp – Chase Utley’s hitting ninth in this odd scenario?

I’m guessing he got the day off against the tough left-hander but has to for the pitcher in the bottom of the ninth because they are so lefty dominant off the bench!!

Flande had no shot at the top 30 here. On the other hand, Jesus Sanchez does. Anyone hear anything on whether they’ve resigned him? He was already in major league camp last ST and did very well as I recall. I thought he was the perfect guy for multiple inning middle relief in another year or two.

It was his day off and he was part of a PH/double switch.

Back in the mid to late 90s we’d all be talking about Flande like he was a real prospect (the left-handed Elizardo Ramirez). My oh my, how the times have changed.

Flande never raised an eyebrow, and he will probably be done with proffesional baseball by 2013.

I don’t think Utley will be doing any rehabs in Allentown or Reading.

He is certainly among the list of major disappointments from last year’s top 30. His year didn’t disappoint in Aumont, Gillies, or Savery fashion, but was just dreary and very mediocre. Sometimes it’s as interesting to look at the major flops as the guys who have asserted themselves and elbowed their way onto or higher up the top 30 list. So, subbing in Aumont, Gillies, and Ramirez for those departing via last winters’ trades from BA’s top 31 for 2010, here are my disappointments. Note: to say a guy badly disappointed last season is not to say his career is toast, although in some cases that seems to be exactly what it says.
The biggest disappointments:
Aumont
Gillies
Kyrell Hudson
Flande
Savery
Rosenberg
Ed Garcia
Correa
We could have almost a bottom 10 list here. If I had to fill it out to 10, I’d add Galvis and Collier. For some to get to move up, others must move down.

I’d have to add hewitt and santana to your list as well. Hewitt will probably bounce back, Hewitt; i’d be surprised.

Maybe it’s just because I saw him pitch live, but I always liked Flande. I saw him pitch against Trenton not long after he was called up to AA and he did pretty well, actually got a lot of funky swings against his changeup, but I guess the hitters just eventually figured him out. This doesn’t seem like any big loss, but Jesus Sanchez seems like a legit prospect and I’d be a little peeved if they let him get away.

I’d call Jesus Sanchez “solid borderline,” if that makes any sense. Solid performance, good but borderline ability, compared to some of our higher ceiling guys. Agree with above he is a decent long relief candidate, maybe a little like Durbin in terms of his role. Hope they sign him. His type has some value.

Above- thought it was off , so looked it up. Flande signed as a professional in 2004, I believe he signed at 19, so don’t know what he was doing in mid to late ’90’s.

My biggest disappointment from last season was definitely Gillies. After watching him in ST, I expected a lot more from him. I haven’t given up though. The other guy I was very disappointed in was Kyrell Hudson. I really thought he had talent (but I liked Mattair so what do I know..) and he really played poorly. As for Hewitt, he just isn’t that good and he could be released, or more likely traded, this season if he doesn’t play well with all their outfield competition.

I guess we need to trust the front office on this one but I don’t like seeing Sanchez get away. I would have released numerous guys (Bocock, Rivero, Escalona, Naylor, and maybe even Carpenter) before getting rid of Sanchez. Oh well, a World Series trophy next year and we’ll call it even.

The reality of the Phillies system is that neither Flande nor Sanchez were among the better of the Phillies pitching prospects and neither had much, if any, chance of ever making the Phillies or providing much return in a trade. Whether there were others that we should have rather dropped from the 40 man is speculative, and I, too, feel that the Phillies’ talent evaluators have a better handle on that question than any of us. That being said, while I am not sorry to lose Flande, I am a bit sorry to lose Sanchez.

Since this is a Yohan Flande thread, like to point out that article by David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal the other day in an offseason outlook now kind of article has a large paragraph on Flande with a nice big picture. Says he is scheduled to be one of the starters at AAA for Braves. Good about Flande: looks like a top level pitcher, doesn’t panic though lots of baserunners and often gets out of it, good at holding runners with good pick-off move, fast runner.

“The 1 and 2 pitch…Utley swings and a long drive…Heyward back…he leaps…that ball’s GONE (can’t say ‘outta heeere!’ for obvious reasons)! And the Phils have dramatically tied this game, spoiling Flande’s perfect game bid with one out to go!”
