Milb.com published their list of the Phillies Organizational All Stars last evening, with some notable comments by Chuck LaMar, which I have attached after each listing. Check out the full article at http://www.milb.com .
C Sebastian Valle-“He had a good year and improved in all facets of the game…His receiving, his throwing and his ability to see the whole field and his power is unquestioned. He has improved immensely and definitely a Major League prospect for us.” Honorable Mentions” Joel Naughton, Tim Kennelly
1B: Matt Rizzotti:”He had a tremendous year and that is the reason he got his promotions…He has gotta continue to improve defensively and he’s gotta hit. We expect him to start the year in Lehigh Valley.” Honorable mention: Andy Tracy, Jonathan Singleton
2B; Harold Garcia: “He is an outstanding worker. Truly, his work ethic is one of the best in our Minor League system and he has made himself into a prospect. If he doesn’t make it as a second baseman, he can move up quick as a utility guy.” Honorable mention: Cesar Hernandez.
SS: Freddy Galvis: “He has got to put the bat on the ball and he has got to do the little things, but he is in the lineup for the runs he saves us defensively…He is an outstanding defender, he could definitely play defensively in the Majors tonight, but he has got to put the ball in play and use the whole field.”
3B: Cody Overbeck: “He had an outstanding year at both levels and he was coming off of hip surgery, so it is great to see him healthy. He is a guy who need to improve defensively. He is an outstanding fastball hitter and there is room on this team for someone who can hit the fastball. Cody can do that.” Honorable Mention: Cody Ransom
OF: Domonic Brown: “It’s pretty obvious that he has a chance to be a regular player in the future and have an impact. He started his year in Major League camp, he came in in shape, and he was determined to show the staff that he was capable of playing at that level….He did everything we asked him to do and held his own in the Majors.”
John Mayberry: “It is time for him to become a Major Leaguer. His development in the Minors is just about over. I think he will come into camp and depending on how Charlie and I feel, he has a chance to make our club as an extra outfielder. It is time for him to get an opportunity to play at the major league level.”
Leandro Castro: “He is extremely aggressive in all phases of the game, he loves to play. He will move up as far as his bat will take him. His running and throwing skills are good enough. We will keep moving him up and challenging him, and so far he has responded at each level.” Honorable Mentions in the OF: Rich Thompson, Derrick Mitchell, Jiwan James, Mike SPidale, Steve Susdorf, and Miguel Alvarez.
DH: Tagg Bozied:”He went and had a heck of a year. He has played at AAA and been to the Majors, so he knows what it takes. He has done everything we have asked of him. He is a leader offensively and in the clubhouse.”
RHP: Austin Hyatt: “He has an outstanding changeup and his velocity and command of his fastball are good enough. He has got to improve his control of his off speed pitches and that could be the difference. But we expect him to progress and start out in AA.”
LHP: Brian Mazone: “He has done everything we ask and he is great to have on the club. He takes the ball and he is great with the prospects. He never complains, he is a professional.”
RP: Scott Mathieson: “Great arm…we had him throwing up to 99mph a couple of times. He is coming off of arm problems and he bounced back. He is an outstanding competitor. He has thrived and he will compete for a job this Spring. It is time for him to prove he can pitch at the Major League level. He has had a couple of short looks, but he will get a long look this Spring.”
The statement regarding Mayberry speaks volumes. It is put up or shut up time as he approaches 27 years of age.
Galvis progress next year will determine the future of Rollins. But I am apprehensive to lose such a vocal team leader. The highest paid guys on the team are not very vocal, sometimes it is required.

This list is ridiculous. Hyatt over Colvin? Rizzotti over Singleton? Mathieson over DeFratus? I guess maybe statistically speaking, guys like Tagg Bozied are all-stars..but c’mon

Baxter: It’s unclear from the write-up here, but the whole point of the MiLB list is to list the top players from last season at each position, regardless of prospect status. They explicitly state that it’s NOT a prospect list–it’s a write-up of the best guys at each position in the organization last year. Thus, the Organizational All-Star Team.

The comments on Mayberry sure sound like he will have a good shot to win that last bench spot. With my expectation that Dom plays at least a few months in LHV to start the year, I’m now thinking that the Phils might just look for an outfielder who bats lefty (Hawpe, Church, etc) who would share RF with Francisco (with Mayberry then being the righty bat on the bench) until Dom is called up and that they won’t spend big. That would leave Valdez as the only infield backup though. If they were to sign a right handed hitting OF, Mayberry wouldn’t be needed.

This is Mayberry’s last year of control in the minors so, yes he has to prove he is a major leaguer for the Phillies to keep beyond this season. He may have a tough time as a bench player since he was normally considered a star and has always had lots of at-bats. I would certainly like to see him as a right handed platoon for Ibanez if Franscico/Gload are in RF before Brown.
That Mazone was the best lefty is scary.
Cesar Hernandez appears to be getting fast tracked. Protected though he was in Rookie ball (could a team really stash him on their roster for a year?) and mentioned in this list as well.

Remember the 93 Phils outfield – Inky / Milt platoon in left and Eisenreich / Chamberlain in right? The ’11 team could look very similar with platoons in the OF – I could see a Mayberry / Ibanez platoon in left where Ibanez plays most of the time because there are mostly RH starters. In right, it could be either a Gload / Francisco platoon or a Brown / Francisco platoon. I also think it’s very likely that they sign a non-tender type RH OF rather than using Mayberry and trade him during ST to a second division type team for a Mayberry type player who happens to be a utility IF type. Basically the same guy at the same point in their career but at a position the Phils need. Or possibly a relief pitcher type – think Geoff Geary or Chad Durbin 3 years ago.

What is he Japanese problem with Ham anyway? What did Ham do to them?

LA Phils Phan, I like your platoon idea a lot. It makes sense and would alleviate a lot of the problems a heavy left-handed line up presents. In addition, they may have the kind of utility guy that you mention already in the organization with Harold Garcia, and he doesn’t seem that far way from the Bigs.

I noticed that SS had Freddy Galvis and no others. No honorable menton. Is there another SS in the whole system? When Villar was traded, the Short stops mentioned were in the GCL, DSL and VSL. That’s a long way away.

Even the veteran SS’s were awful. Bocock had a .608 OPS. Hanzawa had a .538 OPS in Clearwater. Alan Schoenberger had a decent year taking over for Villar, but he played more games overall at second base.

Two questions: 1) Although I don’t disagree with its merits, has anyone ever seen Charley platoon any position in all the time he has managed? He likes the idea of starters and bench players all knowing their different roles. 2) If we didn’t know Raul’s age, based on his performance after the all star beak, would we be thinking he needed to be platooned?

It is a company name – “Nippon Ham” is a meatpacking company. They are the Japanese baseball version of the Green Bay Packers (another team name that is derived from a corporate name). It’s nice that U.S. pro teams do not include corporate names in their team names. But I don’t rule out the possibilty that Chase Utley could one day be inducted into the Hall of Fame for the “Citzens’ Bankers”.

1. Yes, frequently at third base with Dobbs. Sometimes lefty/righty, but often offense/defense depending on if the Phillies have a lefty like Jamie Moyer on the mound. Werth was also platooned with Geoff Jenkins in the first half of 2008, before Werth stepped up and earned the job full time.
2. I’m loathe to look at first and second half splits. I suspect without knowing age we’d look at Ibanez’s 112 OPS+ and either hope for a rebound, or look at it as an area of possible improvement. But I don’t trust a half season of at bats either way.

I don’t necessarily think Ibanez “needs” to be platooned but I think playing a Francisco or Mayberry twice a week against lefties helps balance the lineup, keeps Ibanez fresher late in the season (not because of his age but it helps most guys), and gives us a look at another player to either play more of successful or increase trade value. If Mayberry or Francisco would light it up, they would get more AB’s. If they go the other way, Raul does.

No Defratus as honorable mention? I’m hoping both he and Mathiason land on the big club this year.

Can someone tell Chuck LaMar that Tagg Bozied hasn’t played in the majors in his entire career unless he’s counting spring training.

Can Konerko play LF or is he purely a 1B/DH type?

1B only. And honestly, I’d be wary of adding a 34 year old player with Konerko’s 2007-09 production. 2010 was an outlier.

I noted in another comment section that today is the non-tender deadline. Kendrick was tendered for 2011. Matt Diaz was non-tendered by the Braves, I wonder if the Phillies will make an inquiry there.

I read somewehere that Charlie Maneul himself is pushing to acquire Matt Diaz. I think Maneul’s son is best friends with Diaz or something and they live near to one another. Diaz kills left-handed pitching and he said that he likes Philadelphia fans when they showed appreciation for tripping the red man field intruder.

I like Matt Diaz. I especially like that he can hit left-handed pitching with authority. He would probably command a 2-year deal in the 4-7 million range (just a guess). If the Phils don’t re-sign Werth, they are probably going to want to go into the season with a lot of options. Diaz helps with that equation and makes a very nice right-handed compliment as pinch hitter. Very good fit and takes some pressure off of Dom Brown, Ben Francisco and helps lighten the load and provide other options in left. Diaz has three times hit over .300 in the majors in years where he has had significant at bats. If Werth does not sign, I would guess Diaz is the most likely signing and would represent a very good value – much like the guys the Giants signed last year.

love the idea of signing Diaz. It gives brown the chance to develop without a lot of pressure. Also gives us more right handed options in the of.

I believe Diaz and Manual are neighbors in Florida and I also agree he would be a nice addition as the 4th OF on the Phillies roster.

If the Phils sign Diaz to a two-year deal, if Ibanez is gone in 2012, and if Brown is the full-time RF by the start of 2012, who plays LF against righties in 2012?

Along with Diaz, Lastings Milledge and Josh Fields were also non-tendered. Both might be worth an NRI. Milledge has been poor but he’s played for teams with poor records of developing talent. Fields suffered injuries last year but he’s a 4C guy with right handed pop.

Mayberry is not a major league caliber outfielder.
Between his, at times, loping after the ball while taking a horrible angle defense to his swinging at anything he can reach with a boat oar plate discipline he is AAA filler and no more.
Striking out 100+ times while only hitting in the low teens in the homer department is not going to cut it in The Show. I’ve seen every home game of his in ’09 and ’10 and I would argue that offensively he actually regressed significantly last year over the year prior.
As a prior poster said, if he doesn’t figure it out this year then he’s done with the organization. The Phillies would be foolish to have him anywhere but in the OF at AAA in ’11.

Limited power, poor 2010 hits lefties well (when he plays a lot?). I can’t go with him because he never heard of a walk and doesn’t his enough HR’s to offset. But damn if he is Cholly’s buddy ,what the hell.
