  1. Savery’s line looked OK in relief last night 4 innings pitched 4 hits, no runs, 4 SO’s 1 walk.
Aumont on the other hand had another self destructing outing, 2.2 innings pitched 3 earned runs, 5 walks and 2 wild pitches. Lets just hope this is a lost year for young Aumont.

  2. CLW lost 2 yesterday. They also lost 9-4.

Mayberry has been hot over his last 10 games. He hitting .385 with 8 RBIs. He’s hit in 6 straight with 4 of those being mulit-hit games. A while back he hurt his knee and he was out of sorts for a while. Hopefully, he’s back to 100%.

    Flande was very good last night. 6 1/3 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 6K, 2BBs.

Diekman’s line was worse than Aumont’s. 2/3 IP, 4 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 1K and 2 HBP. He had a bad outing but he was pretty darn good in his previous 9 games: 11 1/3 IP, 5 H, 2ER, 9K and 8 BB (4 were in his 1st outing after being promoted).

Freddy Galvis received an intentional walk last night. What’s up with that? I know… it was situational. Just weird to see a .220 hitter intentionally walked and no pitcher hitting behind him.

  3. Changing Aumont’s delivery seems to have been a giant mistake. I hope Savery carries this forward, One can only imagine the pressures he has to sleep with.

  4. Aumont seems to get a lot less leeway than Trevor May. May has turned in similar performance’s this year and it seems he doesn’t get called on it.

  5. Is Jesus Sanchez okay? Why 1.0 IP?

I think people expect more from Aumont. Given the same age, he was a level higher; came over in a high profile trade; and was touted as a better prospect.

Wow, LHV spotted a 8 run lead and won.

  6. I don’t think this is a lost year for Aumont. If he keeps working (which I expect), this can be a Halladay-like early career set back that he can draw on in the future. He’s young and inexperienced. His mechanics have been changed and he’s inconsistent.
I could be mistaken, but I don’t recall any of his bad lines not accompanying high walk totals. This may sound obvious. But when his mechanics/command are there, he doesn’t get hit, and his Ks are good.

Anyway, I say be excited by the few glimpses of dominance, and be patient with the results when his command is off. This is all part of growing up and developing.

  7. I don’t know why Savery is discussed so much. He has been on life support for two years. It’s just a matter of time before they pull the plug.

  8. Anyone know what’s up with Domingo Santana? I haven’t seen him in the box scores for the last few days.

Team top 3 AB’s leaders all featuring more walks than strikeouts.
    Eduards Tolo (SS,3B,2B)(around 20) 178 AB’s 26 BB, 9K, .281 Batting Average
    Willians Astudillo (3B,2B, C, DH) (around 19) 154 AB’s 12 BB, 4K, .331 BA
    Alexis Salazar (OF) (around 19) 140 AB’s 17BB, 12K, .279 BA

  10. Probably because Trevor May wasn’t received as part of a deal for Cliff Lee. Unfortunately and unfairly for Aumont there will alway be people around who are looking to pounce on his struggles to further justify complaining about Amaro and the FO.

  11. Clearwater- I guess an injury to Troy Hanzawa not necessitating a trip to DL, as Korby Mintken played SS in both ends of yesterday’s Double Header. Carlos Perdomo called up from GCL.

  12. When Halladay was 20, he went 2-3 with a 5.40 ERA. He gave up 46 hits and had only 30 Ks in 36 innings pitched. I wonder if some Blue Jays fan somewhere that year typed the words, ” Let’s not compare Roy Halladay to Roger Clemens. Ever.”

  13. The Phillies need to hire someone else to make their #1 draft picks

Although this are young kids , early results are not promising for :

    Biddle /Dugan / Hewitt and Savery…last 4 # 1 picks

  14. Dom, though Dugan was the Phillies’ first pick he wasn’t a first round pick and shouldn’t be compared with the rest. Either way though, I don’t think you can evaluate Dugan and Biddle with any certainty at this stage of their careers.

  15. Kendrick optioned to the minors…. Carpenter was brought up hopefully brown is up soon

  16. Happs command isnt back. Should be interesting to see what happens if Carpenter does well and Happ has a good outing.

  17. Carp is bullpen insurance until KK’s next projected start. Most likely Happ is brought up at that point. Till then, Carp can serve as a long-man if Moyer has another implosion like his last outing.

  18. I was taking a look at OF assists. We don’t often look at fielding stats and we tend to downplay them in the lower levels of the organization but I couldn’t resist looking at the OF’ers. Here’s the top players in OF assist and I put errors right next to it.

    Gose (CLW) 15A 5E
    Castro (LWD) 11A 0E
    Mitchell (CLW) 7A 1E
    Brown (Read/LHV) 5A 4E
    James (LWD) 5A 2E
    Hewitt 5A 6E

I wasn’t surprised that Gose was #1 but 15A so far. Castro was a little surprise to me especially having no errors. You’d think that a guy with a strong arm would airmail a throw or two. Mitchell was a big shock to me. He’s a converted 2B. Berry had 5 assists but he’s out of the organization.

  19. Oh happy days. They finally tired of seeing Kendrick in a major league uniform. Hope help is wrong and they intend on keeping Kendrick there until September. Let Happ take Herndon or Carpenter’s spot when he is ready.

  20. KK has been the best of the 3 (Moyer, Blanton, KK) since May 1st.

    Per Matt Gelb: “since May 1: Moyer (7-7, 4.78), Blanton (3-5, 6.21), Kendrick (5-3, 4.04).”

    Like

  21. Yeah, Blanton blew chunks when he first came back. May 1 is too big of a window. In his last 6 he has 4 quality starts, two trainwrecks, and an average of 7+ innings in those quality starts. Kendrick has 3 quality starts in that time. Moyer has 4 quality starts as well. And Kendrick can’t possibly be average MLB pitcher, Heavy B has the skills to be one

  22. So does anyone actually think Carpenter will get a chance to start? I mean if Happ has a poor outing tonight, do they keep him in AAA and give Carpenter an opportunity? At least for a week or so, nothing seriously long-term.

  23. Altherr walked twice and got a hit. Great to see.
Duffy was a monster today. Three hits and three walks, including a HR. I don’t understand why a college senior was sent to GCL. He should be in NYPenn.

  24. Why wouldn’t Carpenter get a chance to start? He’s pitched as well in AAA as Happ ever did. Its about time he got a chance to show what he has.

  25. Really bizarre game for the GCL today. First 3 guys walk and then Duffy hits a GS to go up 4-0 after 4 batters. Bonilla has a nice outing giving up 4 R but only 1 earned as there were 3 errors behind him. Gotta love 8Ks and 0BB.

  26. Why would a college senior who If I am not wrong was a spike award finalist, sent to play gcl

  27. Please, God, no Mayberry. Guys, he is not a good player and one hot week does not change that. Ben Francisco is better than Mayberry and Ben’s not that great.

  28. Not sure why Duffy is in GCL, but it’s not as if he’s tearing it up. He’s only hitting .264. I’m guessing the organization doesn’t think too highly of him as a prospect.

  29. Where else would you suggest Duffy go? And whatever team you pick, explain why Duffy is better than their DH/1b?

  30. Lenny,

I wouldn’t go as far as to say Carpenter has done as much as Happ ever did. Happ put up some really good strikeout numbers in AAA to prove that he has major league stuff. That being said I think Carpenter is more than capable of being a 5th starter in this league and I do hope he gets at least one start if Happ doesn’t impress tonight.

  31. I believe Carpenter is trade bait. He has 3 starts to show what he’s got for someone. Oakland?? Toronto??

  32. They are paying Blanton 8m per year probably all guaranteed ..thats why KK went down . Carpenter will pitch middle relief according to Amaro

They are hoping Happ pitches well tonight so they can bring him up

  33. And Blanton has a track record of success and a big league arm. Kendrick is worthless. Whoever wants Kendrick over Blanton is just Palin level stupid

  34. Gotta love Rizzo tonight. The Erie pitcher intentionally walks him with two out and Garcia at second in the first inning? Then he hits him in his second at bat and Matt responds with yet another three run homer in his third at bat to tie the game at 6. This guy is something special.

  35. If they call Happ up to take Kendrick’s spot in the rotation on Saturday, they’ll still need someone to take Moyer’s spot on Sunday. Right?

  36. The Phillies may be forced into recalling Kendrick if Moyer goes on the DL because otherwise Kendrick would have to spend 10 days in the minors. But if he replaces an injured player he would not have to spend the 10 days in the minors. The Phillies would then recall Happ to replace Carpenter on saturday.

If the Phillies recall Happ to replace Moyer then they could not recall Kendrick to replace Carpenter for at least 10 days.

  37. Christopher Duffy (which is what First Inning refers to him now- to distinguish from LVIP’s Chris Duffy) finally has a good game and now he should be promoted? His .264 something BA referred to above was bolstered by yesterday’s 3 for 3 and most of the season he was right around .230 or below. A few of the experts on here have complained on and on about the other 1B in GCL, Patrick Murray, as in why was he ever signed to be in GCL at 23. Duffy is almost exactly one year younger than Murray, is significantly older than most on team, and Murray has a far superior rate of production being around .330 for the season. So why not campaign for Murray? Neither of those would be more highly regarded than Cusick, who is defensively well regarded, capable of playing 3B, and production has been limited by some minor injuries so far, but not going to GCL. Also if Kelly Dugan ever returns from injury he should play over the lot, because the OF is full with team’s best players Miguel Alvarez and Domingo Santana, and either Kyrell Hudson steps up a bit or they try Altherr in CF, then they eventually hopefully they use Dugan and Cusick at 1B/DH , and in the meantime they fill with the higher drafted Jake Smith who seems to be behind at 3B and has not excelled, but he can fill at 1B in the meantime anyway, so there will be no room at the Inn for Duffy. Also no one ever satisfactorily anwered about the Golden Spikes Award, whether the NCAA mandates representatives from every Conference, and Duffy was placed there as Conference USA’s representative.

    Like

  38. There are 5 finalists for the Golden Spikes Award. Duffy was one of them, along with Bryce Harper (who won), Yasmani Grandal (C) from Miami, Drew Pomeranz (P) from Mississippi, and Chris Sale (P) from Florida Gulf Coast. That is not every conference, although the watchlists have people from most every conference. In fact no one from the Pac-10 or Big XII was a finalist. Hitting .447 with 21 HR, 81 RBI and a .850 Slg. % is why Duffy was on there.

Duffy has not been tearing it up in the GCL though, you are right about that. Where he starts next year will probably show you more about where the Phillies view him.
