Friday–Lehigh Valley lost their second straight game, post All Star break, this time 7-3 to Louisville. An RBI single by Domonic Brown got the ‘Pigs on the board in the first inning and they then added 2 more in the 4th on a Paul Hoover RBI single and a Brian Bocock Sac Fly, making it 3-0. Louisville began chipping away and before Lehigh Valley turned around, Louisville scored 7 unanswered for the victory. Drew Carpenter started and was adequate, going 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits. He walked one and struck out 4. Oscar Villarreal (1-3) took the loss in relief. John Mayberry had his 2nd consecutive three hit game, while Paul Hoover added 2 hits of his own. Aroldis CHapman got the win in relief for Lousiville, striking out all four Lehigh Valley hitters he faced.
Saturday–A nice effort Saturday evening in the 5-1 Lehigh Valley win. After Luisville scored their lone run in the 2nd inning, Brandon Duckworth (4-3) and four Lehigh Valley relievers shut Louisville down for the next seven innings. Duckworth went 5.2 giving up just the lone run on 3 hits. The offense came from the least likely source, in the form of two solo homers by Brian Bocock (2,3) as well as a solo pinch hit homer by Joe Savery. John Mayberry chipped in as well with an RBI single.
Sunday–Yet another one run loss on Sunday, 5-4 to Louisville. Brian Mazone (5-10) came off the DL to get the start and gave up a four spot in the first inning, before settling down to go six innings, giving up 5 runs ( 3 earned) on seven hits. He walked one and struck out three. Costly errors by Ozzie Chavez and Paul Hoover led to two Louisville runs. An RBI double by Chris Duffy and an RBI single by DOmonic Brown cut the lead to 4-2 in the 4th, and Lehigh Valley added another two runs in the 8th, the big hit being an RBI double by John Mayberry. The ‘Pigs came up short however, going down in order in the 9th.
Notes: Andy Tracy left the game Saturday evening, struggling with his sore shoulder.
–Between Reading and Lehigh Valley, Domonic Brown has combined to hit in 28 of his last 32 games, hitting over .350 during that stretch with 9 HR and 28 RBI.
–In his last 6 games, John Mayberry is 10-21 with 6 RBI’s.
–Reliever Mike Stutes has not allowed an earned run in his last 5 outings, spanning 6 innings.
–In his last eight games between Reading and Lehigh Valley, Michael Schwimer has thrown 8.1 scoreless with 4 saves and a WHIP of 0.39.
–The multi homer game by Brian Bocock was the first of his career.
Transactions: Making room on the roster for Antonio Bastardo, who was optioned to Lehigh Valley, the ‘Pigs released pitcher Ryan Vogelsong. Vogelsong was 2-5 with a 4.91 ERA in 25 games (7 starts) and most importantly, walked 40 batters in his 58 innings of work.
–Infielder Melvin Dorta was placed on the DL with a finger sprain. Taking his place on the roster is Infielder Keoni DeRenne, who was promoted from Reading to Lehigh Valley on Sunday. This will be his second stint of the season for the IronPigs, having hit .250 the first time around. He had been hitting .231 in limited at bats in Reading.
–Pitcher Brian Mazone was activated from the DL to pitch on SUnday when his case of left turf toe apparantly cleared up. Coming down with a similar case of left turf toe was pitcher Ty Taubenheim who was placed on the DL to make room for Mazone.
The Phillies should bite the long-term implications bullet and call up Dom Brown NOW!
With Tracy out, is there any chance of a Rizzotti callup? I know his ABs are limited but he simply hasn’t cooled off at Reading.

It is so obvious that the Phillies should call up Brown, particularly with their offensive struggles. I’ll live with the occasionally questionable running routes to balls – the guy is a stud.

I think Rizzotti could be called up in September. Why not have a super-hot hitter in your back pocket for early innings against RH pitching, so you save Dobbs and Gload for the 8th and 9th. Also gives Phils a chance to evaluate him in BP, makeup in clubhouse, etc., to see if they want to keep or trade him.

DiamondDerby, even though Rizzotti will have to be put on the 40 man in December, I seriously doubt he will be called up in September. The Phillies have no history of calling up hitters that have spent no time at AAA. Mayberry is the likely call in September.
