  1. Nice outing by Aumont.

If the defense is that bad at GCL it is possible a lot of “earned runs” may be questionable.

  2. Aumont had 4 walks in 5 innings that is hardly a nice outing but considering where he came from he is starting to improve.

  3. Nowheels, you’re right about the earned runs. Like I’ve written before, the GCL is almost an entirely different brand of baseball. The elements of pitching independent of defense are most important. When I look at a pitcher’s GCL stat line, I look at almost nothing besides innings, walks and strikeouts.

  4. Biddle- seems like the plan is around a 3 inning stint every 5th day. 7 runs but only 1 earned, team had 2 errors by SS Steven Malcolm, and one each from 1B Carlos Perdomo, and 3B Maikel Franco. Jesse Biddle in this game had 1BB and 4 K’s. For season. 13.1 IP and 13 K.

Quinton Berry claimed on waivers by San Diego Padres, who shipped him to AA, so there’s an opening when things resume, perhaps. So you can scratch him off the list.

Those who have “complained” over the loss of Jason Jaramillo may be encouraged by the news that the Pirates shipped him (and his .161 BA) to AAA , to the benefit of Allentown’s own Eric Kratz.

Alot of the most used Williamsport pitchers are averaging around a Strikeout an Innning or more, including yesterday’s starter Mario Hollands who got off to a slow start and was not reputed to be known for that. Closer Juan Sosa off to good start , now, when I seen him MPH indicator ranged from 94 down to 76, 5th in IP- also a good K rate. Good Hitting, so far, from Cesar Hernandez(2B), Miguel Alvarez (LF) and Michael Dabbs (DH). C Jeff Lanning hitting some also and looks he will share the Catching with Cameron Rupp, now comparitively that much older as the 8th round choice from HS around 3 years back. Recent Draftee James Klocke will have to try to pick up some AB’s as 3rd Catcher for now.

  5. Seems like Donald is holding his own in Cleveland. Sometimes for no reason you fall in love with a player and root for him, donald was one I always followed, hope he has a nice career. Guys like Biddle, will they go to instructional league to pitch more in the fall? work on pitches. or will they limit his innings first year.

  6. Biddle is struggling a little wih hits allowed but the K rate is a agood sign. yes, I’m sure he’ll go to the Instructional league if he’s still feeling healthy. Being from the NE, he really hasn’t thrown that mnay innings. A guy to keep an eye on is Diekman. He’s only thrown 9 innings so far in Clearwater but he hasn’t given up a hit yet to a lefty and he didn’t allow a walk (his biggest problem) in his last 4 appearances. Also, Lugo continues to make me think he has a major league arm. For those of you who haven’t seen him, he just looks and throws like a late game pitcher. The Phillies should have cheap bullpen arms for several years with all the good arms in the minors right now who could be major league relievers (Bastardo, Matheson, Schwimer, Stutes, Rosenberg ?, DeFratus, Aumont?, Sanchez, Ellis, Diekman, Lugo, Wertz) . Its a long list and if only half make it, that’s still not bad and they’re at various levels which should the stream going for several years.

  7. Curious why you list Sanchez as a reliever. He’s had really good success as a starter. I’ve heard others mention this as well, just no one ever offered an explanation as to why.

    Thanks.

  8. I never like seeing alot of unearned runs because it feels like a pitcher is losing his composure when faced with adversity. However, there were 5 errors last night, so I think it is fair to say that 5 fielding errors can result in 6 unearned runs.

  9. I hope Aumont isn’t as confused as I am by how the Phils org. intends to use him. Reliever? Starter? Reliever? Starter? Anyway, despite some lingering control issues, an encouraging turn-around by Philippe.

  10. I don’t think the organization knows yet how it will use Aumont and I believe that they still might not know next year. However, they want to use him as a starter because: (a) they made a huge trade for him and do not want to limit his upside yet; (b) if he starts, he can build stamina and develop all of his pitches; and (c) due to all the screwing around with his delivery, they want and need him to get as much repetition as possible with a comfortable motion and arm release (the team is now silent on exactly how they are tell him to pitch – right now, I don’t think they are saying much to him – they probably want him to find his own comfort zone).

Given how badly he got his brains bashed in earlier this year, I think he’s making a nice little recovery. But I don’t know how hard or well he is really throwing – can anyone shed some light on that? Is he back to his old 93-97 range? By the way, if you look at his numbers in the AFL, you will be shocked. He was regularly rearing back and throwing in the high 90s last fall and there’s nothing to indicate that he is or was hurt. This kid has an arm and he has good breaking stuff – he’s just got to get everything under control, including his emotions.

  11. The Recliner GM article is very thorough and the analysis generally appears to be spot on. You can quibble with this ranking or that ranking, but it’s pretty damned close to the lists that have been generated on our site.

  12. So when will we get to see updated sonar scores? I’m curious what Brown, Cosart, Singleton and Colvin’s scores are after their breakout campaigns

  13. Recliner list is reasonable. I’d probably move a few around and replace a few but its not bad. Btw, I think Sanchez will ultimately be a reliever in the majors because I can see him as a terrific ground ball reliever that you bring in with men on in the 6th or 7th innings. I think there will be better starters although I’m not sure because I am very impressed with his results.

  14. Naylor seemed to be overthrowing last night. His fastball which normally sit at 87-88 was up in the zone at 89-90. Both home runs were hit on what appeared to be 81 and 82 mph belt high change ups . He could not get his curve over for strikes.

Rizzotti was a gem to watch. He was all ramped up for the home run hitting contest. Even went down to the batting cages for few warmup swings but he still just kept hitting line drives up the middle. Even if he tried to change his approach for the contest every time the balls he hit went up the middle of the field including his first swing of the contest which he lined right back at the pitcher’s screen. His longest shot was a drive about 400ft to the right of dead center which a 15ft wall stands 410 ft at an angle from home plate. His first at bat in the game was a line drive single to center off a lefty and he was one of the only hitter to work a 3-2 walk in the All Star game. He also fielded a hard hit ground ball to his left flawlessly.

  16. Who ever complained about losing Jason Jaramillo….the only complaint was getting zero for him. The Phils would love to have Jaramillo back.

  18. Don’t know if this was already posted and I missed it, but Riley Cooper finally signed with Philly- the Eagles. He was a 15th round draft choice in 2006 and the Phillies offered him 1st round money to sign, but he decided to pursue football at the U. of Miami.

  19. MLL never heard they offered him first round money, wow and he didnt sign, went to college and never hit much, but still got 250,000 last year to play baseball from texas I think was the team.

  22. I thought that the Riley Cooper contract with Texas was contingent upon him reporting to the minors and playing baseball, which he will not do , because he will be in the NFL.

People complain about the loss of Jaramillo all the time on here. They did not get nothing for him, they got Ronnie Paulino. If you claim they prefer Jaramillo to either Carlos Ruiz or Brian Schneider I think that claim is off base. If there is a claim that someone with Jason Jaramillo’s level of experience should be stashed at AAA for a September call up, that role would not see much of an upgrade over A) Dane Sardinha or B) Paul Hoover, if there is any at all. Jaramillo got somewhat significant playing time as Pittsburgh’s only back-up Catcher and, as above, hit around .161 with numerous fielding miscues inluding I have seen , in my limited Pirates viewing, him just plain whiff on relatively high pitches 3 times, and a recent dropping of a foul pop up after which the batter hit a game winning HR. That was probably was got him replaced, before that maybe he had pictures. He does , however , have a great throwing arm, and is good throwing to bases. The assertion that Philly would love to have him back, seems to indicate there will still be wails on here about the great loss.
