Nick Hernandez started his rehab in the GCL. It’s nice to see that. Two of the younger pitchers on the squad pitched very well after that. Miguel Nunez, a 17 year old from the DR, pitched 3 innings of 1 hit, 2 K ball. Lino Martinez, an 18 year old from VZ, pitched 2 innings of 1 H ball. Aaron Altherr didn’t get caught up in the Bellman jinx and went 2-4 with a 2B and a RBI. Whenever I write something about a guy, he always seems to slump after that.
Kyrell Hudson must have heard Altherr breathing down his neck. He went 3 – 4 with a @B and RBI. He was on an 8 game hitless drought prior to last night. He was on an 0-30 bender and was hitless in July. Let’s hope he builds on that. Mario Hollands has impressed. After two lousy outings to start his pro career, he’s had 4 solid outings.
I;m sure AndyB won’t mind if I throw out a few names from below the border. In the DSL: Adrian Sierra, a 19 year old 5’11” lefty, has been very good. He’s Bastardo size but he’s given up 9 runs in 47 IP and 5 of those came in his only bad outing. Delvi Francisco, a 6’1″ 17 year old, has 2HRs and a .284 BA. The HRs don’t sound like much but they are so few and far between in the DSL that he might be a power guy.
In the VSL: Rosmel Fajardo has caught my eye. He’s a 6’2″ 17 year old with a .317 BA. He looks like he’s a speedy CF’er with little power so far. Willians Astudillo is a 5’9″ fireplug wi8th a .327 BA and a .400 OBP. He has no position to speak of. He has tons of errors and has played C, 2B and 3B in his 44 games. He might have even played 1B. It was tough to find a young pitching prospect so I chose 20 year old Ely Izturriaga. He’s another Bastardo clone (5’11” lefty). He played well last year in the VSL and was promoted mid-season to the GCL. Now he’s back in the VSL, it appears they are trying him as a closer. He has 4 saves and 24Ks in 22 IP. He has a 2.01 ERA.
The GCL is played I believe in the B fields of the Spring Training complexes. Combine the Florida weather with the usual short season hitting/pitching and it is another extreme pitchers’ league. 20 games into the season and the Red Sox lead the league in HRs with just 13. Interestingly, in the GCL there are twice as many stolen bases as there are home runs.
Nice site changes, all good. Biddle has pitched poorly his last two times out. Let’s hop ethat Hudson can build on his good game yesterday. Lots of GCL stolen bases come from lots of pitchers learning how to throw off speed pitches and catchers having no shot.
Looks like Morgado’s living up to his billing in the early going: power stuff, but definitely needs to harness it (8:6 K:BB in 5.2 IP thus far). I think I’m right in stating that the organization usually waits until the offseason to make any major mechanical changes with college guys, and I wonder if they’ll wind up tweaking Morgado’s mechanics in an attempt to improve his command.
Just for something to discuss. Seeing Scott Rolen, Michael Bourne and Marlon Byrd in the All Star Game got me thinking about how you could basically field an entire team of above average major league position players just of guys drafted and developed by the Phillies.
1B. Ryan Howard
2B. Chase Utley
SS. Jimmy Rollins
3B. Scott Rolen
RF. Marlon Bryd
CF. Michael Bourne
LF. Pat Burrell (or Dominic Brown if you think he’s ready)
C. Carlos Ruiz
Now that offense would stack up with any team in the majors. Unfortunately you couldn’t say the same about the Phillies Pitching. Cole Hammels is very good. J.A. Happ was very good last year but doesn’t have a big enough body of work to really judge him yet. Gavin Floyd and Brett Myers have been very good at times but never consistently so. And our development of relief pitching has been pretty sub standard any way you slice it.

Hudson must get great jumps on fly balls to his left and right in center. His outfield play running down two long fly balls in the 9th inning won praise from the Cutters broadcast crew last night.
Nowheels, The lack of homers in the SA leagues is just an observation. I guess if Santana played there instead of coming straight to the States, he might have put up big HR numbers. Maybe it’s just that the best prospects don’t even go to the VSL or DSL?
Save yourself some time and effort. NBC Sports/Circling the Bases did this last year in a series called Restoring the Roster (by players drafted, anyway):
The lack of homers in the DSL/VSL is probably due to the size of the fields. If they are similar to Spring Training complex fields in FL and AZ they are generally a little bigger than typical parks – maybe 340-360 down the lines and 420 to CF. These fields are used for practice as well as games and with no stands around most of the field I think one of the goals is to not lose a huge number of baseballs. I am sure there are exceptions but most of these fields are a little larger than average. Probably lots of weather like Florida also where heavy humidity makes the ball carry less.
Awwww . . . you guys are no fun. I know Dykstra was in the Mets’ system – I’m from New York and followed the team at that time – I even know Dykstra hit like .358 for the Mets’ single A team. I was trying to figure out, however, which prior Phillie was in, shall we say, a less evolved state of human development . . . Dykstra was the first guy who came to mind, but, of course, there’s always Ugeth Urbina, the famous “felon to be named later” in the Polanco trade.
I always thought toolsy meant. the guy had the potential to develop his raw tools as a hitter. far as running, arm. he already had those. and hopefully he will learn to hit. That why I would never say howard was toolsy, he had one major tool already power . but would he hit for average. like gose we all knew he had speed, arm, but would he be able to hit for average or power or both , he was a pitcher in high school and question remain about his ability to hit. so in essents he had two tools coming out arm and speed.Which I always believe was two things toolsy guys had. but maybe I am way off base
I always thought “Toolsy” merely meant that a player has an impressive set of raw athletic skills that translate well to baseball but, over time, this phrase has often come to mean “athletically talented but with unproven baseball skills.”
biddle got lit up. This kid I Would love to see make it to big leagues, he was so excited to be drafted by the phillies. didnt care about the bonus, just wanted to sign and start. nice story if he makes it to philly.
According to BlueClaws Blog, Quinton Berry was claimed off waivers by the Padres. Hopefully the change of scenery gives him a fighting chance to sniff the majors, because it wasn’t happening here.
I like the site enhancements.

Why are homeruns scarce. Is just the youth of the players. Or……..

I like the re-design of the blogsite. However, I am trying to determine which of the primate characters on the home page is Lenny Dykstra.

I think one of the characters hunched over would be Dykstra. He had that stonosis issue.

You could probably do that with most good teams.

None of them is Dykstra because he wasn’t developed in the Phillies system.

Yankees and Sox are close.
1B. Nick Johnson
2B. Cano
SS. Jeter
3B. Soriano?(probably needs to play in the OF at this point)
RF. Melky
CF. Brett Gardner
LF. ?
C. Posada
1B. ?
2B. Pedroia
SS. Hanley
3B. Youkilis
RF. ?
CF. Ellsbury
LF. ?
C. Varitek
I’d take the Phills offense for sure, but their Picthing depth would crush ours.
