Around the System, Bottom Half

A look at the bottom half of the system, with a good deal of talent to talk about.

Lakewood

Brody Colvin, 19, 17 games, 5-6 with a 3.87 ERA; 93 IP 82H 31BB 80K, 1.21 WHIP, .234 opp. avg., 1.11 GO/AO; .217 vs. LH, .245 vs. RH, .209 with RISP. Colvin may be the biggest bright spot among the pitchers in the organization since May. Since May 1, he is 4-3 with a 2.43 ERA in 13 starts, walking 22 and striking out 71 in 77.2 innings of work.

Trevor May, 20, 16 games in Clearwater, 5-5 with a 5.01 ERA; 70 IP 53H 61BB 90K; .212 opp. avg., 0.76 GO/AO, 1.63 WHIP. Has made two starts in Lakewood with a line of: 11IP 11H 7ER 5BB 13K. May’s problems are well documented as his control.  He has as much talent as anyone in the organization but needs to find the plate. He is currently averaging 7.33 BB/9, while also averaging 11.44 K/9.

Colby Shreve, 22, 16 games (11 starts); 5-4 with a 3.33 ERA; 75.2 IP 60H 23BB 50K, 1.09 WHIP; 0.87 GO/AO; .217 opp. avg., .193 vs. LH, .236 vs. RH, .317 with RISP.  The Phils 6th round pick in the ’08 draft, Shreve has pitched well fairly consistently after missing much of ’08 and ’09 after TJ surgery.

Jonathan Pettibone, 20, 14 games, 3-3 with a 4.48 ERA; 68.1 IP 60H 7HR allowed, 29BB 47K, 1.30 WHIP; .241 opp.avg.,1.81 GO/AO; .215 vs. LH, .256 vs. RH, .194 with RISP; Pettibone struggled through June, but two very nice early July starts may have gotten him on track.

Josh Zeid, 23, 31 games, 3 starts, 5-3 with a 3.21 ERA; 53.1 IP 47H 16BB 53K, 1.18 WHIP; .239 opp. avg., 1.33 GO/AO; .210 vs. LH, .259 vs. RH; .196 opp. avg as a starter. After a dominant April in the bullpen, Zeid struggled in May and was transitioned into the rotation, where he spent his college career in late June.  Zeid has a very nice arm, it is the psycological battle to be perfect he seems to battle with.

Jared Cosart, 20, 14 starts, 7-3 with a 3.79 ERA; 71.1 IP 60H 16BB 77K, 1.06 WHIP; .224 opp. avg., 1.93 GO/AO; .234 vs. LH, .218 vs. RH, .314 with RISP. Cosart continues to show great promise and his health remains the biggest question mark.  He has currently been on the DL for about 2 weeks with a flare up of elbow pain.

Nick Hernandez, 21, 8 starts, 3-1 with a 1.61 ERA. 56 IP 38H 8BB 52K, 0.82 WHIP; 0.93 GO/AO, .192 opp. avg.  The big lefty has been on the DL for almost two months now, slowing his great start.

Williamsport

Kevin Angelle, 22, 5 starts, 3-0 with a 0.61 ERA; 29.1 IP 15H 10BB 29K, 0.85 WHIP; .152 opp. avg., 1.80 GO/AO;  The Phils 32nd round pick in the ’09 draft, Angelle was very good in ’09 in the GCL and has followed that up with a great start for the Crosscutters.

Percy Garner, 21, 2 starts, 0-2 with a 18.00 ERA; 4IP 8H 1BB 1K. The 77th overall pick in the 2010 draft, Garner struggled in each of his outings early on.  Garner was the #2 starter on the Ball State team, and went 5-3 with a 4.62 ERA in 17 games with Ball State.

Mario Hollands, 21, 4 starts, 1-1 with a 6.19 ERA; 16IP 21H 3BB 16K; 1.50 WHIP; .328 opp. avg., 0.71 GO/AO. Hollands, the Phils 10th round pick out of UC-Santa Barbera has struggled out of the gate.  Hollands comes into this season with Williamsport having started 14 games at UCSB, going 5-5 with a 3.77 ERA in 98IP.

Eric Pettis, 22, 5 starts, 4-0 with a 1.16 ERA; 31IP 18H 2BB 28K, 0.65 WHIP; .161 opp. avg., 1.14 GO/AO.  This years 35th round pick out of UC-Irvine has been dominant in his first 4 starts.  Alot to like with Pettis who was the Big West Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2009. Pettis was the closer for UC Irvine in 2008 and 2009, earning 17 saves each year and was moved into the rotation in 2010, going 9-5 with a 3.62 ERA.

Julio Rodriguez, 19, In Lakewood: 4 games, 2-0 with a 3.12 ERA; 17.1 IP 13H 10BB 22K, 1.32 WHIP; .200 opp. avg., 1.07 GO/AO. In Williamsport: 5 starts, 1-2 with a 3.33 ERA; 27 IP 20H 13BB 26K; 1.22 WHIP; .202 opp. avg., 1.16 GO/AO. TOTALS: 9 games (8 starts); 3-2 with a 3.25 ERA; 44.1 IP 33H 23BB 48K, 1.26 WHIP, 1.13 Go/AO; .201 opp. avg. Rodriguez has pitched well at both Lakewood and Williamsport. The home run ball has been one of his few problems.

GCL

Jesse Biddle, 18, 3 starts, 0-0 with a 7.45 ERA; 9.2 IP 11H 5BB 9K, .289 opp. avg., 1.00 Go/AO.

Lisalberto Bonilla, 20, 4 starts, 1-1 with a 2.01 ERA; 22.1IP 21H 4BB 25K, .241 opp. avg., 1.79 GO/AO

Colin Kleven, 19, 3 starts, 0-2 with a 11.70 ERA; 10 IP 15H 5BB 5K, 2.00 WHIP, .341 opp. avg., 0.71 GO/AO.

Ervis Manzanillo, 20, 4 starts, 0-0 with a 2.76 ERA; 16.1 IP 13H 6BB 17K, 1.16 WHIP, .224 opp. avg., 1.55 GO/AO.

Lino Martinez, 18, 3 starts, 0-2 with a 6.17 ERA; 11.2 IP 17H 5BB 8K, 1.89 WHIP, .347 opp. avg., 1.50 GO/AO.

  1. While I’m excited about many of these guys, I wondered if anyone had updates on Hernandez who looked real good before the injury.

  2. That list includes an awful lot of talent and quite a few guys that will pitch regularly in the majors if they stay healthy.

  3. Thanks for the update.
It SEEMS that despite the loss via trades of about 7 prospects in trades, the system is building once again into a superior group of prospects. Plaudits to the scouts and cross-checkers, as well as the front office.

Now…can we sign some of those draft picks still remaining?

  4. Nice Job gregg! I think you’ve said it all. As I said on another thread, I wish our pitching prospects were better spaced out among the levels. There are a few guys in the South American leagues that are pitching well too. Having lots of pitching talent in the lower levels of the organization is a good problem to have.

  5. Need to see what Angelle and Pettis can do at an age appropriate level before getting too excited about them. Hopefully they move to Lakewood soon to start a tandem starter/reliever process like they did with Hyatt last year. I’d imagine they want to watch the IP for guys like Colvin and Shreve.

  6. is there anywhere to follow up on what some of the HS kids they drafted are doing in summer leagues? My mind can’t even figure out how to look for stuff like that.

  7. Dear Wayne, In addition to Tom’s suggestion- you can go to Gulf Coast Phillies. This page has rosters & statistics for the team.

  8. ah, thanks. No, I was talking more about guys like Frazier or any of the other unsigned guys that james targeted in his reviews.

  9. Ah ok. If you know the actual Summer league they are in, try their official web sites. The Cape Cod league actually keeps decent statistics I see. I’m not terribly aware of the other leagues though.

  10. James got that hitting streak up to 20 games today. Singleton still looking confused in recent at bats. I talked to Mark Parent after the game and he seems to think all the attention has gotten to Singleton. He also likes James better as a leadoff man, after trying Villar there for a bit when the 2nd half began.

  11. After getting yanked in yesterday’s game for not running out a pop up sacrifice bunt attempt which was turned into a double play, Anthony Gose is riding the pines in tonight’s game at Brighthouse. Looks like attitude is holding him back.

  12. It is great that there are almost too many good pitchers to fill out the low level rotations. Since percentages say many of these guys will stall out it would be much better if this kind of quality made its way to AA.

Concerning Gose: I think it is a worthwhile lesson. Even Rollins had a benching for not hustling stint.

Concerning Innings: Would it be better to go more days rest and longer outings or shorter outings on standard rest? I would think the latter. Without anyone in Lakewood needing a promotion (young guys or guys who need more starts) will Shreve and Colvin just be shut down heading into a playoff? Or maybe they become half game type relievers every fifth day, like Tom suggested?

  14. Hopefully, the Cosart visit is just a follow up on his first visit and not because of new pain or recurring pain.

  15. regarding Costart amd not sure if there was an additional visit but this was posted on my fantasy web site….He got a clean bill of health,” said Phillies assistant general manager Chuck LaMar. “Dr. Andrews said it was nothing major. He felt Jarred was fine. We just didn’t want to take any chances. Jarred is back in Florida ready to begin his throwing program.” Cosart, 20, is 7-3 with a 3.79 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 14 starts with Single-A Lakewood this season, averaging 9.7 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9. He was ranked as the organization’s No. 8 prospect by Baseball America over the winter, but his stock has increased greatly this season. Source: CSNPhilly.com Jul. 12 – 9:06 pm et
