Sunday Snippet

Just a brief note that Lakewood closer Jordan Ellis, 24 was promoted to High A Clearwater.  Ellis although old for the league has pitched very well, going 3-3 with a 2.47 ERA in 33 games to go along with 11 saves.  In his 43.2 innings of work, Ellis has allowed 31 hits, walked 17 and struck out 55.  Opponents were hitting just .200 against him, and his WHIP in Lakewood stood at 1.09. Going to Clearwater along with Ellis is Catcher Torre Langley, 22.

New faces on the Lakewood roster are Catcher David Doss along with LHP Kyle Carr who was the Twins 12th Round pick in the ’08 draft.

  1. Colby Shreve had a nice outing last night. He is not listed in the breath as Cosart, Colvin and May. I’ve seen him in action and consider him another one of Lakewood”s studs

  2. Got to see Mathieson throw a dominant two innings last night for save No. 16. The guy can bring it, and complements 95-98 heat with a very good change-up and a hard slider.

  3. I agree I don’t know what Luke Wertz has to do to get called up. I would really like to see what he can do against some tougher competition.

  4. Can’t remember if someone else noted this elsewhere, but Jiwan James, who had fallen off my personal radar screen, had a very good June and has kept it up in July. Let’s hope all that promise that everyone saw in him from Instructs is coming out now.

  5. Anthony Gose was taken out of the Thresher-D-Cubs game today for not hustling. In the bottom of the 5th Gose popped up a bunt with a runner on first. The Cubs pitcher saw he was not running it out and let the ball drop for a 1-6-3 double play. Daytona Cubs radio.

  6. Tim Kennelly just put one up on the burm in left at Brighthouse for a two run homer to tie up the Thresher- Cubs game at 7-7 after 8. He has driven in 5 runs in the game and is now 15 for 37 (.405) over his last 10 games. Give him a shot at AA.

  7. Kennelly was actually in AA last year, was really surprised to see him start in A+ again this year. Glad to see him picking up.

  8. Wertz probably hasn’t been moved up cause Lakewood hasn’t found a suitable closer yet, which is now Wertz. Maybe Lugo will be the guy, or someone from Williamsport later on. I wouldn’t worry about it though, as Wertz could skip High-A and pitch in Reading all of next year. Same objective, different path.

  9. Nice to see Ellis get moved up. Wertz will get some shots closing with Zeid starting but Lugo will get his share too because the kid has a real arm and a very bright future. Im not sure why Patrick Murphy is in the GCL at 23, he’s too good for that level and Angelle needs to get challenged in Lakewood to see if he’s for real because he’s 22.

  10. Ellis is 9 days older than Wertz. Maybe that’s why he got the nod (you know I’m just kidding, right?). I think Ellis got the call because Wertz was injured earlier and has played in 1/3 less games. Ellis became the closer while Wertz was out. He’s pitched in more games and has 11 saves so up he goes. Wertz is deserving though.

How about Pettis again in the NY-Penn? He’s 4 – 0 in 5 games. He pitched 31 innings, 18 hits, 4 ER, 28Ks and 2 (count ’em) walks. I’m also a big Angelle supporter. Too many guys pitching well and not enough slots for them. Too bad they aren’t spread out more around the levels. A couple at LHV, some at Reading, more at CLW, throw some in Lakewood and the rest fighting it out in the lower levels. Unfortunately, there’s a logjam in the A level teams and not much at the higher levels.

And I’m not bashing the Phils for any trades. It is what it is.

  11. Is Pettis’ 5 game dominance worthy of a bump? Then again, where could he go in “A” ball that doesn’t already have a logjam of pitchers?

  12. Looking over the NY-Penn, the best pitchers start getting called up after 7-8 starts. So it seems reasonable to me that if he still looks like this in two weeks, call him up.

  13. That’s the issue, there are no starting spots for these succussful college guys like Pettis and Angelle. My guess is you will see them move up and do what Hyatt did last year, pitch in relief 3-5 innings at a time. It’s also a way to lower the workload of the current starters. Could see them doing this with someone like Colvin and Shreve, and even others coming back from injuries (Cosart/Hernandez). And then come playoff time, go with the hot hand as the starter as they did with Hyatt as well.

  14. Honestly, if he can be had at a reasonable price, I have no problem whatsoever with us getting Corey Hart, particularly if we think Werth may not sign next year. Hart is probably not as good as Werth (although he may be better this year), but he’s under contract for a couple of years and he’s the closest thing to Jayson Werth in baseball right now – damn, he even looks like, and is the same size as, Jayson Werth. Unfortunately, I think the price will be too high.

  15. Just read catch he is available and his numbers are good, I Believe milk, might move him because they seems not to be able to sign him. It’s kind of what I got out of the article, they are looking for pitching I know that, what they would take is another story.

  16. Hart is nothing like Werth. Werth is a disciplined athlete with baseball skills. Hart is a free swinger who is relatively poor in other aspects of the game.

  17. I didn’t say he was a good as Werth (although he probably has been this year) – Werth is a more disciplined hitter and a player I’d much rather have. But Hart is fast, is younger than Werth and has legitimate power. We may need a replacement rightfielder for a year if Werth leaves – we could do a hell of lot worse than Corey Hart. I also like the idea of another righty bat for a strech run and to platoon with Raul.

As for fielding/throwing skills, I just haven’t seen Hart enough to comment – not agreeing or disagreeing, I honestly don’t know. Obviously, Werth has a nice arm and is a pretty good (albeit not great) fielder – I don’t dispute he’s a better athlete than Hart.

  18. It will be interesting to see what Lakewood does with all their pitchers. Hernandez is due back in another week or two and Cosart possibly another couple of weeks after that and they will be added to the rotation. Add in the two W-Port starters that are older and have been lights out so far (Angelle and Petis) and you have lots of pitchers. I assumed May wouldn’t be there long if he pitched well but he’s been only fair so far. I guess I could see Hyatt getting a promotion to Reading and Correa getting shoved the bullpen to allow Hernandez and Cosart to go up late in the year after showing that they’re healthy. Having both missing some time will actually allow them to pitch later in the year while a guy like Colvin could get shut down early. Shreve and Pettibone both missed time earlier also. These are all GREAT problems for an organization to have.

  19. Murray- I think Shreve gets shut down early or converted to the pen to limit his innings. He’s already pitched 75. That, along with your above scenario, would make room for a promotion for Angelle by early august if he is still bullying kids that are 3 years younger.

  20. A guy I’m starting to pay attention to more and more is Aaron Altherr … he’s similar in size to Dom Brown at 6’5″ and 190 lbs. With todays 3-7 performance, he’s up to .291 after 75 ABs. Not showing much power, but when you look at Dom Brown’s GCL figures (.214/.292/.265 in 117 ABs), it can put it into a whole new context. He’s only got 1 walk, but is 8-9 in Stolen Bases. Dom Brown played his GCL year as an 18 year old while Altherr is 19. So I will be following him very closely this year and into the future.

  21. Corey Hart- MLBTR today says San Francisco wanted Hart, and Milwaukee wanted Jonathon Sanchez or Madison Baumgartner. True that price may be high.

Murray_ (also MkeMike from previous stuff) I see complaints on the 1B in GCL, and his name is Patrick Murray, not Murphy, think you’ be able to remember that one. Though he has done well, so far, he is a 23 year old College signee, and I doubt they move him to WPT because of the more highly rated Draftee, Jeffrey Cusick, not to mention if Kelly Dugan ever returns from injury he may move to 1B there, and the GCL situation may be upturned by the signings of several HS draft choices for OF , maybe 1B , 3B , etc. And if they push him up and Cusick up to Lakewood, they run into the whole “promote Singleton ” issue , and even if they went that route they run into logjam at Clearwater with Darin Ruf who I say is above the 2 draftees from this season, and another overage 1B signee from years past, James Murphy.
