Understood. Hewitt is not on a positive trajectory at this time, but Savery is 4 1/2 years older. I just can’t write Hewitt off at this point the same way I can with Savery.
Can anyone figure out Julian Sampson, one game he is awful then good then awful and last night his numbers looked very good, 5k’s in 3.2 although he did give up 4 baserunners, no runs.
It is not like the Iron Pigs are so loaded with prospects that we just dump Savery although I concede that he is certainly struggling.
Those Williamsport averages make Hewitt look like Babe Ruth.
Any explanation for all of Villar/Villan accumulating so many errors. Throws?
Most Low A younger shortstops make lots of errors. There are very few Freddy Galvis types that make few errors from the beginning. I think Derek Jeter made 57 errors in the South Atlantic League at age 19. Then followed that up with 73 errors for 3 teams (A+, AA, AAA) the next season at age 20. Of course he also hit .344 and stole 50 bases that 73 error year.
Main point is really young SS make errors. The good ones decrease those errors as they mature. Jeter made 21 errors in AAA the next year at age 21 and then 22, 18, and 9 his first 3 full seasons in the majors. If Villar is still making lots of errors in 3 years then it is a problem. But as long as he seems to have the range for SS, I am OK with a few extra errors along with decent offense.
Really, other than Biddle, the whole 2010 draft class is off to an exceptionally disappointing start. On the other hand, at least with respect to the college pitchers, I guess this is to be expected since they were toolsy but with average results in college.
I figure Savery to be around 3 1/2 years younger than Hewitt, but who’s counting. Savery still is around 24 and in AAA, so , age, in and of itself shouldn’t apply. For Savery to have any utility he should continue pitching, perhaps as a long reliever, then he can relieve once every 4 days or so in out of control games, and then he can work in more hitting in AAA and such, and when he develops hitting and such, he can be the last guy in the bullpen and an option for pinch-hitting and pinch-running. It would not shock me if they tried him in that MLB role, starting on September 1. If they don’t do that, then he likely goes up for the Rule 5 Draft, and then it is goodbye for a former 1st round pick, if he is selected ,or shown to be on the outs ,if not. I don’t think he was an experiment as he was drafted as a pitcher and that’s where they tried him, results – you decide.
Williamsport squad results lack the semi-positive numbers of Cesar Hernandez and Miguel Alvarez. It is mostly guys from the recent draft who comprise the list. Rupp, despite lacking results, seems to have improved lately and is rounding into the process. I think Hudson and Santana can round into the good side, in addition to C. Hernandez and Alvarez. Duran can at least be a good fielding, light hitting type. The guys from the recent draft comprise the rest of the list and are lagging, but some did not expect much I would say. It could be , for the most part, the recent draft may be starting to look like a train wreck.
Andyb, you’re double counting errors for Jeter and adding multiple seasons to come up with 73. 56 errors is correct for his season in the Sally League, but he then had 25 across three levels in ’94 and 29 in a full season in AAA.
You’re right about the fielding percentages being lower though. Actually if you looked at league fielding percentages you’d probably be able to graph a straight line of them increasing from youth baseball all the way up to the majors. The league fielding percentage for the NY-Penn League this season is .966, about where it was last year as well. By comparison, the MLB fielding percentage is .983. And having witnessed NY-Penn League games in person, I can attest that the overall play is much sloppier than at higher levels.
It’s also worth noting that the NY-Penn League is an EXTREMELY poor hitters league. The league average batting average is .246 and the average OPS is .687. Oddly, they score 4.7 runs a game and that’s likely due to the poor fielding and team speed. Watching a NY-Penn League game is like watching an ’80s baseball game on real grass.
Marfis, what MLB team would keep Joe savery on their big league roster for a full season? He’s a bad pitcher in AAA and a hitter with a very little amount ab’s in the minors.
My bad on Jeter. Read the wrong column on that 3-level year. He did make 56 errors the SAL year (not 57).
The high error totals for middle infielders are a combination of bad fields and lack of repetition. Even major league rookies tend to make lots of errors their first year or two. Ian Desmond is already over 20 for the Nats, though he still has pretty good range. We are a little spoiled by Jimmy Rollins who has always had pretty good hands. Though most fielding metrics usually have Rollins in the middle on range.
We are really spoiled with Jimmy Rollins. His bat may run hot and cold but he plays good D all the time. It is a crazy luxury not to have to worry about SS for the last 9 years.
If Savery was taken in the Rule 5 draft, he wouldn’t make it on a big league roster but the Phils probably wouldn’t take him back. That’s my negative comment.
I’ve always supported Savery. He’s always been in my top 30, until this year. I want him to succeed but I don’t think it will be in the Phillies organization. I think a change of scenery might be best for him.
I was at the Cutters game last night and here are some thoughts on what I saw. First of all, it was about 94 degrees with no wind so the bats were pretty quiet. Both teams looked beat down out there from the heat so it wasn’t a hit fest by any means.
On Domingo Santana: I was not all that impressed with him. He’s very passive at the plate…has a long swing and looks like he’d be overwhelmed by more advanced pitching (as he was in Lakewood). He’s very patient. He takes a lot of pitches but he seemed to have trouble making contact even when he had good pitches to swing at. Its tough to gauge a guy on one outing. I really wish I could have made the other two games but real life intruded. Physically, its hard to believe he’s just 17. He’s a big kid who really looks like he’s gonna bulk out a bunch as he matures. He looks like a 1B/LF type more than anything. Just on his size, not girth. He’s not out of shape by any means.
Also, Cameron Rupp has a brutal metal bat swing at the moment…scouting reports from the draft on him were quite accurate on that. It might go far if he makes contact but contact isn’t a common thing for him with a wooden bat. Behind the plate, he’s nothing special. Not bad, not good. Nowhere close to where D’Arnaud was at the same level. He needs time to adjust to wooden bats…a lot of time.
I know Raul has hit a little bit better lately, but at some point dont we have to bring up DBrown? Witht he lineup struggling and probably unwilling to make a trade we have to do something dont we?

Cosart Sidelined
In a more serious piece of Phillies news, righthander Jarred Cosart will be shut down for at least the next three weeks with elbow soreness. The 20-year-old was 7-3, 3.79 in 71 1/3 innings for low Class A Lakewood, but he hasn’t pitched since June 26, when he had to come out in the first inning of a start at Delmarva. A 38th round pick in 2008 who signed with the Phillies as a summer follow, Cosart has been held back by injuries before as his 2009 pro debut was delayed by shoulder soreness. He went on to go 2-2, 2.22 in 24 innings in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League last year and was one of the best pitching prospects in the organization coming into the season thanks to his low to mid 90s fastball and a curveball with plus potential.
From John Sickels of SBN’s MLB Bonus Baby re: Rizzotti:
Oh, he’s a legit prospect….but his season is rather out of context with the rest of his career, and as a first baseman who is 24 in DoubleA he has to stay this hot to get noticed. I’d say C+
I have been silent on this issue for a long time, but the Joe Savery experiment is just sad. The guy just can’t get it done. Time to move on.
