Around the SYstem–OF

A look at the Outfield throughout the system, as the Phils monitor both development and who may be expendable for the right player.

Lehigh Valley

Chris Aguila,31,  7 at bats thus far, 2 hits.

Domonic Brown, 22, Reading: 236 AB’s; .318/.391/.602; 15 HR 47 RBI; 12 SB, 6 CS; Lehigh Valley: 28 AB’s; .429/.467/.714; 2HR 6 RBI; 1 SB, 1 CS; TOTALS: 264 AB’s, .330/.399/.614; 17 HR 53 RBI; 13 SB, 7 CS; 11% BB rate, 19% k rate.  69 games in the OF, 3 assists, 4 errors. Not much more to say that hasn’t been said already.

Chris Duffy, 30, 250 AB’s; .248/.313/.372; 4 HR 29 RBI; 10 SB 4 CS; .347 vs. LH, .224 vs. RH; .385 with RISP; .257 in June; 8% bb rate; 23% k rate. 66 games, 2 assists, 1 error. Striking out too much for a guy at the top of the order.

John Mayberry, 26, 272 AB’s; .246/.311/.419; 10 HR 41 RBI; 7 SB 0CS; .241 vs. LH, .248 vs. RH, .230 with RISP; .187 in June; 7% bb rate, 24% K rate. 69 games, 1 assist, 0 errors. Has struggled mightily over the last month, diminishing what trade value he has.

Reading

Quintin Berry, 25, 212 AB’s; .208/.317/.288; 2HR 19 RBI; 21 SB 6 CS; .237 vs. RH, .201 vs. LH; .250 with RISP; .245 in June; 13% bb rate, 18% k rate. 60 games, 4 assists, 3 errors. Berry is using his speed well, however must pick it up at the plate or his 40 man spot is in jeopardy.

Tyson Gillies, 21, 105 AB’s; .238/.286/.333; 2 HR 6 RBI; 2 SB 2CS; .174 vs. LH, .256 vs. RH; .182 with RISP; 5% bb rate, 22% k rate. Has been on DL since June 20. 26 games in the OF, 3 assists, 1 error. Gillies is on the DL with a persistent hamstring problem that has set back his development this year.

Mike Spidale, 28, 242 AB’s; .302/.350/..405; 3 HR 28 RBI; 17 SB 7 CS; .279 vs. LH, .309 vs. RH, .294 with RISP; 7% bb rate, 12% k rate; .348 in June. 67 games in the OF, 2 errors, 2 assists. SPidale is doing simply everything he should be doing at this level.  He is a guy that has floated around for several years now, and its fairly obvious the role the Phils see him in.

Rich Thompson, 31, Lehigh Valley: 203 AB’s, .286/.339/.369; 2HR 17 RBI; 17 SB 3 CS; Reading: Hitting .091 in 22 AB’s.  TOTALS: 225 AB’s; .267/.328/..342 ; 2 HR 18 RBI; 18 SB, 3 CS; 8% bb rate, 14% k rate. 45 games in the OF; 1 assist, 1 error.

Clearwater

Anthony Gose, 19, 323 AB’s; .276/.333/.412; 4 HR 18 RBI; 28 SB 22 CS; .264 vs. LH, .281 vs. RH, .200 with RISP; .308 in June; 7% bb rate, 23 % k rate. 78 games in CF, 12 OF assists, 3 errors, 2.71 R/F. An impressive season for Gose, who should be looking at a move to Reading to start next season.

Derrick Mitchell, 23, 190 AB’s; .247/.321/.442; 7 HR 26 RBI; 15 SB 1 SB; .316 vs. LH, .218 vs. RH; .241 in June, .250 with RISP; 8% bb rate, 20% k rate. 56 games in the OF, 4 assists, 1 error, 1.57 R/F. Mitchell continues middle of the road production.  Must pick it up.

D’Arby Myers, 21, 126 ab’s; .262/.301/.325; 1 HR 12 RBI; 10 SB 2 CS: .250 vs. LH, .268 vs. RH; .257 with RISP; .269 in June; 5% bb rate; 25% k rate. 35 games in the OF, 2 assists, 1 error. What is striking is Myers batting eye.  For a guy with his speed, he has gotta work the count more.

Steve Susdorf, 24, 259 AB’s; .282/.354/.409; 6 HR 44 RBI; 4 SB 3 CS; .225 vs. LH, .307 vs. RH; .317 in June; .371 with RISP; 10% bb rate, 21% k rate. Very productive June for Susdorf.

Lakewood

Leandro Castro, 21, 300 AB’s; .263/.308/.437; 6 HR 50 RBI; 10 SB 7 CS; .250 vs. LH, .270 vs. RH; .286 in June, .260 with RISP; 6% bb rate, 17% rate. 9 OF assists; 0 errors, 1.81 RF.  Alot to like when looking at Castro’s stats this year.  Offensive production and a great arm.

Brian Gump, 23, In Clearwater, 71 AB’s; .183/.256/.239; 0HR 7 RBI; In Lakewood: 41 AB’s, .268/.318/.415; 0HR 0 RBI; TOTALS: 112 AB’s; .214/.278/..304; 0 HR 7 RBI; 3 SB 1 CS; 10% bb rate, 30% k rate. 2 OF assists, 0 errors, 1.91 R/F.

Anthony Hewitt, 21, 257 AB’s; .226/.275/.377; 7 HR 32 RBI; 7 SB 2 CS; .213 vs. LH, .232 vs. RH; .238 in June, .233 with RISP; 4% bb rate, 36% k rate. 42 games in the OF, 4 assists, 5 errors, 1.90 RF. More of the same for Hewitt with maybe slight improvement.  Horrific bb/k rate.

Jiwan James, 21, 316 AB’s; .253/.303/..361; 3 HR 40 RBI; 17 SB 10 CS; .263 vs. LH, .249 vs. RH; .306 in June, .195 with RISP; 6% bb rate, 22% k rate. 4 OF assists, 2 errors, 1.92 R/F.

  1. I talked to Gump yesterday. He was telling me about how Legg and him got together to work on some mechanical things in his approach at the plate. He’s been doing much better since then. Coaches are happy with him.

Castro is drawing some attention from visiting scouts at Lakewood this week. And the boy can DANCE too!

  2. Why the love for Castro? Hitting .263 with an OBP barely over .300, and he’s 21, in low A. Poor stolen base %, and not a whole lot of power. If he really can dance, maybe that’s the career he should pursue. What am I missing?

  3. Sorry for posting my thoughts here:

What do the Phillies do at this juncture? While it’s obvious none of us trust Ruben Amaro, what do we think?

Is this a rebuilding year? Should the Phillies give in to injuries, send most of their players to surgeons (I still think they are feeling the ill-effects from back to back World Serieses), and trade Werth or anyone who isn’t a long-term player?

Could the Phillies spend this trading deadline to bulk up our prospects, acquire some new starting pitching, and fill in infield gaps? AND get higher drafting picks to boot?

  4. Latest BA transactions say Winder Torres voluntarily retired.
Geancarlo Mendez seems to work into regular in LF in GCL.

Miguel Alvarez looks good at Williamsport and has taken over leadership in several offensive categories from Domingo Santana. Alvarez, Hudson, and Santana – a good looking defensive OF with range and good arms. Dugan – website said he had infection removed and out indefinitely.

  5. “None of ust trust Ruben Amaro”…quite the blanket statement, don’t you think…

  6. I think with Castro’s age you got to give him room to grow. He is strong defensively. He has 33 extra base hits (19 2b, 8 3b, and 6hr). I don’t think the SAL League with power. Power is the last thing that usually comes to a young hitter. He may never be a Dom Brown hitter but I still think he can continue to improve. He is in a good stretch right now batting.351 in the last 10.

Sorry Dr s, I try not to participate in ‘group think’.

  8. I think the seemingly high regard for some for Leandro Castro on here, may be partially based on this: He’s not Hewitt.

  9. I trust Amaro and views of Amaro certainly seem pertinent for this site. He’s the guy who’ll decide which, if any, of the prospects are traded or whether we trade for prospects. He’s also the guy who sets the draft and international budget. I’m not happy with him in the area of how much is budgetted for signing bonuses.

  10. On that GCL team really like Mendez. Still filling out. Hit the ball hard everytime in the extended spring game I saw. Good to see they have settled on a position for him.

  11. I think Dom Brown is exactly the shot in the arm this team needs. This guy can play. Sure, he’ll screw up in the field once in a while, but the talent and electricity he will bring will outweigh the occasional gaffes in the field.

  12. I know some people had hopes for Castro because he had a solid year in Williamsport, some pushed for him to be top 15 on the prospects ranking. And he got off to a good start this year, but has been just so-so for most of the year. 21 could actually be considered a little old for Lakewood, right? It seems like he’s had a fairly disappointing year actually.

  13. He just turned 21. That is like a jr in college. Not too old. You figure alot in Low A ball are around his age. If he was to progess a level at a time that would make him 24 at AAA.

  14. Gose is having a good year at Clearwater (except base running). He is only 20 and would be fine with him in High A all year. Maybe a few ABS in August in Reading.

  15. I agree with Gose…maybe an August promotion to get his feet wet but nothing more than that. He’s on a nice steady track right now.

Easily the best of the top 3 picks in 08 (Hewitt, Collier, Gose).

  16. mike77: Yes, that’s worth noticing about Altherr. Keep watching him. He may just be getting started.

He could prove to be a gem.

All in all, a very fine crop with lots from whom several gems should be shining their way to great outfelding…and offense, including Brown. It seems that the others will take 2-4 years to arrive at MLB.

  17. so, i hate to say it, but gose’s numbers are looking a lot like jaun pierre’s numbers.

  18. jdp hopefully, he has better arm which we know he has and more power, in other words a better version of juan.

  19. Gose may be much better. e.g. Pierre now has over 300 ABs and 41 runs. He need over 650 ABs to score 100 runs. More show than production. And he hates walls .

  20. Pierre’s ISOs in three full minor league seasons were .050, .070 and .057. Gose’s ISO this season is .135. I don’t think they are comparable players beyond the speed.

  21. I think we all forget just how much of a game changer Pierre was early in his career. And that was with a noodle for an arm.

Pierre with a plus arm/plus defense is an All-Star caliber player….you know, the same Pierre that is coming up on his 500th SB in the Majors despite terrible defense. The same guy that’s nearly a .300 hitter in over 6000 PAs.
