The minor league signings keep coming with the Phils inking 3B Brandon Pinckney and P Jordan Meaker to minor league deals. Pinckney,28, can play all over the diamond, but played primarily 3B last season for Norfolk, the AAA affiliate of the Orioles. He hit .291/.309/.358 with a homer and 21 RBI’s in 267 AAA at bats last season. Meaker, 24, is a big (6’6, 220) righty, who played college ball at Dallas Baptist University. He was drafted by the Diamondbacks in the 20th round of the 2008 draft. Last season in Low A Ball, Meaker was 4-1 with a 5.67 ERA in 29 games (3 starts). He walked 37 and struck out 40 in his 60 innings of work, with a WHIP of 1.76

Thanks for the update Gregg.
It sounds like Pinckney will duke it out with Sellers for the 3rd base position at AAA. Do you have any updates where any of the unsigned Pigs from last year are?

Pinckney was overmatched in AAA. I think he’s going to play in Reading.

You might be right about that Alan. If so, that’s a shame we couldn’t find anyone with a little more upside to play at Reading.

Once you get to AAA and AA, only a small percentage of your players are high upside anyway. Reading last season had Brian Stavisky, Ozzie Chavez, Kevin Mahar, Mike Spidale, etc. You want prospects but to some extent, it’s good for these high minors clubs to have productive veterans as well. They help their teams compete and contribute to the development of the youngsters.

Agreed Alan. I went to a ton of games last year in Reading, so I know what you’re talking about. From a “fan” perspective, it’s fun to see them win a few ballgames here and there if they can.
I guess I’m splitting hairs, but I’d rather see a 24-25 year old guy there. Either way, no big deal.

Meaker will be 24 in September but I’m not sure why they went for him. They must see something in him that they can fix. He’s a big guy that hasn’t been very effective. He’s only pitched SS and A in his two years in the minors. In SS ball he averaged almost a K an inning but still had 5+ walks per game. Maybe his mechanics are messed up and they think he’ll blossom. The D-Backs didn’t think so.

Pinckney I got at 5’10 165, with 2 HR’s combined at AA and AAA, so power at 3B ain’t found here . At AAA , I got Cody Ransom, and Eric Campbell in addition to Sellers and Pinckney. At AA, I got Tim Kennelly, Cody Overbeck, Yonderman Rodriguez, in addition to Campbell, Sellers, and Pinckney. So maybe , since not all minor league veterans signed in the offseason stick, Pickney will not stick, not that I believe in deriding a player before they get started.
