Lehigh Valley Weekend Game Report

5/29/09–A good pitching performance by Carlos Carrasco was wasted in the 5-3 Iron Pigs loss in their return home against Rochester on Friday night. The RedWings jumped on Carrasco early with a two run homer in the first, but Lehigh Valley came back with single runs in the 3rd, 6th, and 7th to take a 3-2 lead.  That lead survived until the 9th, when Tyler Walker (0-1), blew the save, as well as gave up his first runs of the year on a three run bomb by Matt Macri, which gave Rochester the win.  Carrasco went 7 innings, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits.  He walked 2 and struck out 6.  Lou Marson had a big day at the plate going 3-4 with a run and an RBI, while Miguel Cairo added two hits once again for the ‘Pigs.

5/30/09–Rodrigo Lopez (2-3) was in trouble in practically every inning he pitched in the Lehigh Valley 6-3 loss to Rochester Saturday night.  The Red Wings took a quick 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two more in the third, before back to back homers by Miguel Cairo (2) and David Newhan (3) tied the game in the fifth.  The tie didnt last long however, as Lopez again found himself in trouble, before leaving after the fifth, down 5-3.  His line: 5IP, 8H 5 ER 2BB 4K.   JC Romero pitched the sixth and did a nice job, despite giving up a run on a misplayed ball by Jeremy Slayden.  David Newhan and Pablo Ozuna each had 2 hits for the ‘Pigs.

05/31/09–JC Romero got the start on Sunday, to get his work in before he boarded the Phils team flight to San Diego.  He went 0.2 innings giving up a hit and a walk, while throwing 22 pitches (his pitch count) Romero was followed by scheduled starter Andrew Carpenter, in the 5-1 ‘Pigs win.   Lehigh Valley took a 1-0 lead in the 4th on a sacrifice fly by David Newhan. Lehigh Valley added two more in the 6th on an RBI Duuble by Andy Tracy, which was followed by an RBI single by Miguel Cairo.  Andrew Carpenter (3-0) pitched an excellent game for Lehigh Valley, going 7.1 innings, giving up a run on 3 hits.  He didnt walk a batter and struck out 6.  65 of his 95 pitches thrown were for strikes. Both Pablo Ozuna and Jeremy SLayden had two hits for Lehigh Valley.

Notes: Rich Thompson (back), Jason Donald (leg), Mike Cervenak (wrist), and Andy Tracy (birth of child) were all out of the Lehigh Valley lineup on Friday once again. Tracy was the only one of the four that returned to the lineup Saturday and Sunday.

–Having seen Andrew Carpenter pitch a number of times, today was by far his most impressive performance.  His control was excellent, mixing up his pitches very well.  He gave up only three hits and other than the solo homer he gave up, was not in trouble at all during the game.  His fastball hit 90 mph only twice, but he kept Rochester off balance all day. Speaking to Carpenter after the game, Carpenter did mention that he went out to the mound today with something to prove after being overlooked for promotion.

–Lehigh Valley has blown leads in over 52% of their losses this year.

Miguel Cairo has hit safely in 8 of his first 9 games with Lehigh Valley (.375)

–Lehigh Valley again sold out all three games this weekend.

Transaction: LHP Sergio Escalona was recalled to temporarily replace Brett Myers on the Phillies roster, until the Phils need a starter on Tuesday.

Antonio Bastardo, 23, will make his major league debut starting for the Phillies in San Diego on Tuesday.  Bastardo is 3-2 with a 1.89 ERA in his time spilt between Lehigh Valley/Reading this year. He has walked just 10 and struck out 51in his 47.2 IP this season, with a WHIP right around 1.00. Bastardo has a high80’s into the low 90’s fastball with very good late movement.  His changeup has been steadily improving, keeping the hitters off balance.  Bastardo also throws a slider which is a fairly average pitch for him right now.

  1. Of KK, CC and Carpenter do any of them seem capable of helping the Phillies if Blanton can’t turn it around?

  2. i think carpenter is the most ready to help the big club now. He has the least exciting stuff out of the three of them, but he really knows how to pitch using his arsenal, has good command and pitching knowledge that he can use. The biggest thing for me that seperates him from the other 2 is his mental maturity. He doesnt get phased if he gets into a jam, but is able to stay calm and make his pitches to get out of it. He seems to always pitch with grit and determination and never seems disinterested or like he has given up. I love that side of him and i want to see him spend some time pitching to big league guys. I think he can use his stuff much like moyer has been successful doing his whole career.

  3. Um, Blanton threw 7 shutout innings against the Marlins Tuesday night with a career high 11 Ks…not to mention in his start before that against the Reds, he was dealing a shutout in that game through 4 innings, and then in the 5th ran into trouble, although what hurt him was a 3 run HR to Phillips that had followed a handful of singles….IMO Blanton will be fine, Moyer pitched very well again today & I can’t wait to see Bastardo….Kendrick obviously has irritated the brass in regardless to something he has yet to do that they have told him to fix, what that is I have no idea, but to keep getting passed over is a damning statement in regards to his future in Philly.

  4. Carpenter has given up two runs in three games since he came back. Either he learned something or is in the luckiest
streak of his career. One has to wonder how POed they are at
Park and would he be traded if he fails in relief. Ruben seemed
a little flip when asked if Park would start. So maybe DC has a shot even if Bastardo pitches well

  5. I agree that Carpenter is the most ready right now. But mrmoose did you see Blantons last start lol?? Carpenter is basically the same player as Blanton so if youre unhappy with Joe youll be less happy with Andrew. Carrasco obviously isnt ready yet and Kendrick isnt exciting anyone.

  6. Sorry for the extra post but i noticed Saturday night that outfielder were having trouble with seeing flyball . Is that normal for Lehigh? Should we factor that into ERAs???

  7. COuple of points….NoWHeels, there has been an ongoing problem at Coca COla Park with losing balls around twi light. It does happen fairly regularly, although I would hesitate to factor that into ERA….
As far as the pitching is concerned, carrasco clearly still has the most upside. When watching him pitch, he is simply a power level above Kendrick/Carpenter, who are more finesse pitchers. Carpenter has been very impressive since he came back down and I think DCWILDCAT said it well. That being said, I think that Carpenter is a poor mans Joe Blanton which isnt necessarily a bad thing. Carpenter does have a certain “intangible” that isnt taught in my opinion.

  8. I like that the minor league pitchers seem to notice the sp problems of the big club and are all responding well and making a case that they should be called upon. If nothing else, it shows a great drive. Bastardo has been phenominal. I dont know where these Santana comparisons are coming from, they may be a little absurd, but he really looks like hes coming into his own. I love that he got the call. If he has success, he could be a fan fav bc of his name. Bastardos Bastards anyone?

DC is doing a fantastic job regaining trust from both fans and the organization. Hes clearly not number 1 or 2 material, but i was thinking bullpen or career minor leaguer last year. Now I think hell be a number 4 or 5 guy. Only downside is he reminds me of Anthony Shumaker.

CC is starting to heat up, but i just cant stand his inconsistancy. I would love to see the phillies trade him while some gms still think hes a number 1 or 2 guy. Hes not. Hes a number 3 who will have games where he is untouchable and games where he implodes. Vincente Padilla 2.

It is nice to see everyone making a good case for themselves though. Gotta love that in young players.

good post though, i agree 100% about DC. he seems to just know pitching.

its amazing how the organization doesnt even really mention kendrick anymore. hes a bum….hell be a minor league free agent/ 8 organizations in his career type guy. Tim Redding maybe.

I had this conversation with some friends today. I know I sound crazy, but just hear me out:

I would offer this trade to Toronto.

Hamels, Lou Marson and Carlos Carrasco for Halladay, Brett Cecil, Ricky Romero, and a minor league hitting prospect

    Here is why:

phils need pitching, we get that. here is the main point of this offer; I am 100% sold that Hamels is Barry Zito. Everything from the flaky Cali attitude to the pitching style screams Zito. Lets take advantage of the hangover of the World Series, and specifically Cole winning MVP of WS. Let the Jays think they are getting a ridiculously good ace for a few years. Heres the thing with cole, as was the case with Zito. Their offspeed stuff was their bread and butter. But their offspeed stuff only works when their fastball was 92-93. When Zito’s fastball slipped to 88-89, thats when he started falling. That is whats happening to cole now. I say, make a move before we are stuck with him putting up recent Zito numbers in the near future.

Halladay is gonna be an ace til hes 40, a la Curt Schilling, and he always pitches deep into games. The other two are solid 3-5 starters who are better than Blanton and Moyer. Even before he got hurt, Myers was struggling, and is certainly on the decline.

I think the phils could pull a quick one on the Jays here. Barajas is clearly not their catcher of the future, and Marson will be a solid one. Carassco has had number 1 prospect status for years now, but i dont seem him as anything above a number 3 who occasionally pitches like a number 1, kinda like Vincente Padilla. But lets use Hamels WS MVP and Carassco’s number 1 prospect label as ammo to make the Jays think they are getting a sweet deal.

Its risky, but I watched the game last night, and I am very scared of Hamels’ future. Lets stock up on pitching for the future, and get an ace in the process.

love to hear thoughts on this…

  10. being a good general manager is about seeing things that the rest of the sports world doesnt. Johan Santana was unprotected in the Rule 5 draft when the twins snagged him. Hes a HOFer. Pat Gillick pulled Jayson Werth off the scrap heap and he is the starting RF on a WS champion and a potential dynasty team.

I am an absolute phillies nut. I watch almost every game and when I dont, I read the box scores. I scout players, their pitch speeds, their swings. I know thier minor leaguers. As someone who is generally very good at predicting things, I am VERY nervous about Cole. I do not think he is going to be an ace for 10 years. I understand the city of Phila and most of MLB fans who watched the WS last year fell in love with him due to his postseason performance. As a fan, I am forever indebted to him for bringing us the WS title.

However, you dont live in the past in sports, you live in the future. I see a guy who

    a. his value is at an all time high.

    b. he has been very injury prone since HS

    c. he is a breaking ball specialist who needs a good fastball for those breaking pitches to be effective

    d. his fastball is losing velocity, and with every injury he endures he could lose more.

I just see 100% Zito in his case. I hope that I am so wrong here, and I will eat my words if I am, but even if he comes back and wins 16 games this year, I do not see him having much longevity in the league as a superstar. If we could pull off some sick deal involving him, I would not be opposed. In the end of the day, this is a business, and this is a pure “sell high” situation, because I really don’t see a superstar when I watch him pitch anymore.

I hope hes just taking a few starts to regain his strength after being hurt, but if at the all star break hes only hitting 89 with his fastball, this could be the beginning of a very rough patch.

but who am i to say this? i thought ibanez was an awful signing in the offseason

    Like

  11. Um…Hamels has been 91/92 since early May. His velocity is right in line with where it always was. He always starts off a little low on the gun for the year and gets stronger as the year goes on. He’s completely healthy. Do you even watch the games? He always has a stronger 2nd half than 1st half.

  12. watch every game, know every significant player in the system like the back of my hand. he just reminds me of zito. and it depends what gun you look at. if it says 92 on tv, its actually 89/90

dude, i just made a case for an outside the box thinking trade. disagree all you want, but dont be sarcastic

    Like

  13. I see 89-92…which is where he’s always at. I suspect by late summer he’ll be hitting 93 when he reaches back instead of 92. He was very good in May other than his last start. He’s just got to start being a bit more efficient again so he can start going 7 and 8 innings instead of 6. I hope the Zito comparison is a poor one. Even if he’s never a Santana type ace, he could still help this team for 3 more years as #1 or 1A if we get another Ace.

I’d like to hope that Carrasco will be up at some point in the 2nd half of 09 and that Drabek will be here at some point next year.

  14. dan the man with adr i think you are well off base about hamels. he is anything but zito. i view him not just thru last year but his career. yes he is flaky but he is NOT injury prone. he broke his hand punching a wall? he started this year having pitched 260 innings last year. his value is not at an all time high, that will come. he has an unbelievable changeup which makes a 90 mph fastball devastating. you make him sound like hes ready for a nursing home. he actually should have 10 more wins in his career if the bp had done its job. and for cappers what he did in the WS last year shows all the guts of a cat burglar. look at all the aces who have fallen apart in the playoffs.

  15. Cole’s velocity is right where it should be right now. They actually made a point in mentioning it the last time he was out. He is not losing anything on it. The start of the season you always see pitchers not totally there. He is not a breaking ball specialist. As long as his fastball and all-world change have a consistent mph difference he will continue to be effective. The reason he is so good is because the arm slot is the same for both his pitches. The only breaking ball he has is the curve and he hardly ever uses it.

He’s 25 years old for goodness sake. Zito hit the FA market at 29? He still got a ridiculous contract even when he did ‘decline’. We need to make use of this special arm. I’d rather give up Drabek, and I have a huge man crush on him, Brown and Taylor than go on and give up the best young lefty in the game. We road his shoulders in the playoffs. Don’t you remember that.

We need to go out and get ANOTHER top of the line starter so that our set of 5’s don’t kill us come make or break time and you want to go out and get rid of our only consistent starting pitcher for another ace, albeit arguably the best in the league, and other pitchers comparable to our current slo.

  16. The only problem with Hamels is that they didnt leave him in Florida for a couple of weeks to work out his injury. Instead they pitched him in a cold ex. game in CBP. Had they dont that and start Happ and found out the Park was full of …..then things would be improved now

And BTW. the Twin conned the Marlins into drafting Santana
then trading him for some body or other. Maybe the dumbest move the Marlins ever made and they made plenty along with some good one

BTW 2 Hamels is now 25 which is the year a pitcher reaches maturity and is less like to get injured.

BTW 3 Maybe not a poor mans Blanton but “a man who has
to pay out millions of dollars to stars ” Blanton
    BTW 4 Congrat Jamie Moyer

  17. Fair enough. How do you view Carrasco. While I admit my Hamels trade is never ever going to happen, i actually would love to see the phils trade CC.

I think hes being billed as a bigger prospect than he is actually is, and if we can use that over-hype to get value, you have to do it. He really reminds me of Padilla, and thats a best case scenario. These “incredible stuff but not good mental makeup” guys are a dime a dozen, and many don’t succeed in the majors. He is the kind of guy who could very well have a no hitter in his ML career, but could also pitch for 5 teams and end up with a .500 record.

If we could get an established starter from a team who thinks he is more than he is, id be all for it

  18. as far as carrasco i think he is probably not the ss we were led to believe. ive seen him pitch and i always thought that. but he is much better than a 5.60 era and 0-6. for me k to bb ratio is the most important stat for a young prospect at aaa or any level. it shows raw dominance. it seems every game he has 1 blw up inning. change that and you change the pitcher. he has the raw stuff. he needs someone to see the big inning coming.

Your proposal is,of course, too radical for it to ever happen.
Secondly, the trade is a bad value for the Phillies. Halladay is 32 and Hamels is only 25. Not a huge difference but big enough in baseball life. The other names mentioned are both left-handed starters with limited MLB experience. With Happ now starting, Bastardo about to, and Savery perhaps 2 or 3 years away we will be too left handed throughout the system. Sure you can trade them again but why get them in the first place. Finally, I don’t agree with your Hamels as Zito scenario but I enjoyed reading it anyway.
    keep ’em coming.

  21. NoWheels, not sure if someone mentioned this, but look at FIP, which takes out batted balls in the measure of a pitcher’s performance. It helps alleviates some of the concerns that minor league fielding will drive up an ERA.

Any word on who replace Tony Bastard in the rotation?

  22. Carrasco is barely 22 and in AAA. His Ks are up. His BBs are down. His HRs are down. He’s inducing more ground balls. And his velocity remains strong. All good signs for a guy who’s still REALLY young – born in ’87, just 9 months older than Drabek and 6 months older than Dom Brown. To improve facing such advanced competition at a young age to me shows a decent mental makeup.

Sure, I’d move him in the right deal but the CC negativity seems to be a little over the top.

  23. I think CC is clearly going to become a ML starter at some point. The questions are: when will that happen and how good will he become? The answers are tough to decipher. He might not be up for good much before the middle/end of 2010. How good will he be? Frankly, I think nobody has a clue. I doubt he’ll be an ace, but he could be anything from a decent 2 to a guy who really can’t cut it as a 5 and has to find a job in the bullpen. He’s certainly nobody I’d rely on in the short or medium run, that’s for sure.

  24. I completely agree with tjc on carassco. The man is 22 years old ppl. All of his stats minut ERA (althought I is important) are above average to great for AAA pitchers and the guy is 2-5 years younger than the batters he’s facing and the pitchers he’s matched up against. If everyone would think let’s see him up here late next season don’t u think hIs upside would suddenly jump a little in peoples eyes. Here’sy prediction for him and pls bring this back up at the end of next season to see how I did: he drastcly improves towards the end of this yea and ends with good stats. Sub 4.5 ERA great K/BB ratio not too many homers and a good GO/AO.
He starts next season in AAA and absolutly dominates consistently and becomes the number 1 we all talk about. Then he gets called up mid June next season and is inserted as our 1A to hamels 1

  25. Marson’s been better since they moved him to the 2 hole. I think when he was sent down by the Phils (Ruiz coming back from injury), they told him he wasn’t ready. I think he was down about it. He had a bit of the “back-to-the-minors” bummer. And they put him in the 6 or 7 slot to boot. His head wasn’t on straight. Donald getting hurt and Marson moving up in the order looks like just the tonic to snap him out of it.

  28. i am very pumped to see bastardo pitch tonight. i have been one of his biggest supporters on this blog. i think that he has a great chance of helping out the big club. but more than anything, i am excited to see him in action. he is one of those under the radar types. we have never really had a full scouting report on him. i just read this morning that charlie said his fastball was 91-92. this contradicts so many comments posted on this blog about him not having a good fastball. i also have read that he has a lot of movement as noted by J.C., which is clearly the key to pitching in the bigs. so if it is true, that would also account for his great minor league numbers.

on a seperate note, for all of those who complain that the phillies don’t develop talent nor give their minor leaguers a chance, we now have 2 rookies in our rotation. pretty impressive for a division leading team. i am sure they are shopping both guys for a proven veteran, but still. that is very good.

  29. Bastardo should be interesting tonight. Saw him start earlier in the season in Harrisburg. In his pregame warmup he did no long tossing. About 20 pitches in to his warmup he simply stopped, sat down on the bullpen bench and sipped on a bottle of water while his catcher Tuffy Gosewisch waited behind the bullpen plate and stared toward the outfield. He then resumed his warmups. But what caught my attention during the game was the late movement on his fastball. As his fastball approached the home plate cut area in front of the plate it just seemed to jump . Never seen anything like it. Closest thing i can compare it to would be a “riser” in fast pitch softball. If he can keep it down and set it up with his change and slider we should see a good game.

  35. Joe How good he was he was getting pulled in the fifth. We overpaid for him. Oakland called our bluff and got three prospect who might be good major league players. We got a 88-89 miles an hour myers type one or two good starts and 5 bad. How many Quality starts did he have last year while going 10-0. my count 6 is what I count out of 16 that stinks. Billy Beane got less for harden

  36. Ugh, Blanton has a career ERA half a run higher then Derek Lowe, is 28 and pitched over 190 innings each of the past four years. He had a rough start but he is a much better pitcher then people give him credit for. If we did overpay, it wasn’t by much since we had him last year (WFC’s, remember?) and 2009 and 2010.

But the goal of a baseball organization is to win the world series. And we did that, trading those three prospects for Blanton worked out. No Blanton = No WS last year.

I’ll gladly take the WS over the prospects. I’d hope everyone else here would too.

As far as Maloney goes, I don’t see him ever turning into much on the major league level. He just doesn’t have enough velocity to be anything more than a 5 of long reliever/loogy type.
