March 3rd Prospect-Related Link Dump

I included Happ here because he is still on prospect lists and is still under the rookie innings requirement. Don’t know about his service time, though.

JA Happ likes to compete

John Mayberry is big, runs fast

Lou Marson reflects

Anthony Hewitt iz in ur toolshed, whiffing on curves.

Feel free to discuss.

  2. I understand why there is all the hype around Hewitt, since he is in training camp, but it’s kinda frustrating to me that the organization isn’t making a single peep about Collier – who performed much better than Hewitt last year, and is significantly younger.

  3. Jeff O,
I think the hype over Hewitt is so great because the guy is an unbelievable athlete who could be a plus defender and a 30/30 guy offensively. Worst case scenario he’s greg golson, best case scenario he’s A-rod lite (minus the hitting for average obviously).

  4. Hewitt’s getting the same hype Golson got. The writers probably dug up old Golson stories from 2005 and replaced his name with Hewitt. The only thing missing is the late Larry Rojas comparing him to somebody in the Hall of Fame or something.

  5. as much concern as i have about hewitt’s ability to hit for a respectable average, i find it hard to credibly put forward an argument that suggests that i know more about what makes a good prospect than pat gillick does. as such, i am inclined to give hewitt the benefit of the doubt for a few years. if he is wrong, and there was someone else drafted behind hewitt that turns out to be a star, we can all say “i told you so.”

  6. I don’t deny Hewitt’s athletic ability, and his ceiling – I’m looking forward to seeing him play first hand over the next couple of days. I just think that there should be some more excitement about Collier – who has shown nice plate discipline, which from what I understand, is a skill that most players either have or they don’t.

Maybe Collier will sneak up on everyone sorta like the way Dom Brown played second fiddle to D’Arby Myers for the first year and a half of their pro careers.

Hahaha maybe the inky and dn just can’t afford people to write new stories anymore.

  8. Hewitt’s getting the press because he’s the 1st round pick. unlike the hard-core enthusiasts like most everyone who frequents this site, the average fan wouldn’t know who Collier or any other player drafted last year is.

Even if the Phillies tried to talk up Collier it is unlikely the Inquirer would be interested. Their audience is the casual fan..

  9. I think Hewitt is getting the hype because he is in Major League Camp (Collier is not), and he is there because the Phillies have established a tradition of inviting their #1 pick to camp the next year (like Savery last year). All of these newspaper stories are just fluff pieces introducing some of the lesser know guys, but they are not writing any about guys who are not actually in camp.

  10. Oh, and Mayberry just hit another bomb. I had low expectations, and he is exceeding them by a lot so far. Lets hope he can keep it up.

  11. they have enough prospects now to have an intrasquad game on tv that would type the farm system and stir interest.

Greg Golson will be a 5th outfielder even if he fails to develop any further. While I like everything I read on Hewitt as far as his mentality and work ethic, his worst case scenario is far from MLB bench player; it’s probably something like “failed to adapt to major league pitching and never made it past Clearwater.”

Re: Mayberry, while I know it’s early, the kid’s putting together a nice case for inclusion on the 25-man. Working with Charlie Manuel can only help him, and I have to think that if he continues to hit like this over the next few weeks, the Phils may look to deal Stairs and keep Junior around as a southpaw-basher. With the questions marks surrounding Werth, it wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world, either.

Oh, and Slayden’s playing like he’s got something to prove. I still think he’s a major league bench bat for several years by the time all is said and done.

  13. The Hewitt headline made me LOL.

I’m starting to think Mayberry would be a good 5th OF. I’m sure they are still actively looking to unload Stairs or Jenkins to make room for him.

I hated the Mayberry trade when it happened because I was worried it was their plan to replace Burrell. It looks like they had other things in mind.
