The farm appears safe

Gillick/Amaro/Arbuckle contained themselves, no blood was shed for a fungible middle reliever, and my sanity has been restored. So everything is safe. Tomorrow we can focus on the last month of the minor league season and the draft deadline and everything not related to Ron Mahay, Will Ohman, and Roy Halladay. Thanks again everyone for your continued support.

  1. I wouldn’t have minded seeing some prospects go for a top notch starter or a bat. But for a situational bullpen lefty? No thanks… I’m glad Gillick stood Pat. (bad pun)

  2. I agree Paul. The window doesn’t close this year so don’t mortgage the pharm, it makes sense to me. What does the big club really, honestly *need*? A top-flight starter. If you couldn’t get one don’t sell of top prospects for anything else!

PP, enjoy having your website back, and I’ll continue to enjoy reading it and saying stupid stuff.

  3. Wouldn’t be surprised if a deal happens before the waiver deal deadline. Don’t breath too easily. Might need a 3B now, with Feliz’s back (may have needed one, anyway)

  4. Noticed Escalona had another nice outing today in Reading. Perhaps that’s are future LOOGY in 09.

  5. Nick –

I think hes a little young for 2009. I’d like to see him pitch a full season at Reading.

I posted this in the Reading thread, but it was good to see Carpenter pitch well after his recall.

  6. @allentown: Really? Can we plllleeeeaaaasssseeeeeee move on. For god sakes, you would think that Adrian Cardenas was a superhuman that could use telekenisis to move the ball with is mind.

  7. JAK, how do you know he can’t?

The Abreu trade was made on July 30th. The Moyer deal was made in August. Gillick likes August trades. But if a deal is made then, its going to be a minor prospect I believe.

  8. 1. PRAISE THE LORD, no donald for mahay trade or any garbage like that.

    2. I would expect another august trade, gillick loves those and has tended to do well with them.

  9. Outman–he’s the type yousee alot of, kind of like Maloney. Has a chance to be good, but probably just someone between Duckwortj and Kendrick.

Cardenas–that could hurt for a long time for a mediocre guy like Blanton. The henhouse might be saafe today, but we have had a top hen stolen already–a likely big time producer!

  10. situational lefties are so overrated im so glad the phils didnt give up a key farm piece for a guy that gets out 1 lefty every couple of days

  11. Speaking of Feliz, any chance Sellers moves up sometime soon to the big club? He’s been raking for the last two months (3/4 today with a HR, 2 RBI). He’s been as good (if not better) than the guy he replaced (Costanzo) and is only 19 months older. What’s the scouting report on him?

  12. i am on the side that the holes the Phillies need to fill, although important, are of the minor variety (im conceeding a top line starter cause there was no chance)

a lefty specialist, and a right bat should be obtainable as PP mentioned, like Moyer and Iguchi in the last two years.

im also assuming that its possible the asking prices will go down, and only require a 15-20 prospect instead of Donald or Marson.

add to that, when teams like Detroit or even Toronto are finally convinced that they aren’t contending, other players might become available…

who knows, maybe in two weeks Farnsworth clears waivers .

Obviously the names like Mahay and Olman (lefty pen help) are still out there and available- but likely for less than today

  13. JAK32 — no telekinesis, but he should be a very good major league 2B for a lot of seasons. People say Utley blocks him, but that is far from certain.

  14. JAK — whether Cardenas turns out to be superhuman or the next Todd Walker, he was a valuable trade chip. You don’t trade a valuable commodity for a guy with a 79 ERA+ and 1.41 WHIP (or, if you go by less reliable statistics, 5-12 with a 4.96 ERA) and block a guy who has pitched well in AAA and in a couple of major league appearances.

I would have preferred that Gillick replaced Eaton in the rotation with GIllick and find a cheap long reliever or a LOOGY to take Tom Gordon’s roster spot.

  15. I don’t think we’ll see Sellers up. Cervanek is already there. He’s like Dobbs in that he can play 1st, 3rd, and the corner OFs. I thought Cervanek might get to play in the Washington series. I didn’t see him in the box scores. Although Sellers is hot. I notice Mike Costanzo played against LHV last night. Something like 128Ks in 350 ABs. I think he only has 10 HRs too. Would we want Mike replacing Feliz? Not me. That Lidge trade looks better and better (even though I thought it was a great trade at the time).

  16. I just started reading this site this year but I am curious to hear how the regulars here felt abut Costanzo when he was with the Phils? While I know very little about evaluating prospects, it does seem to me that many of the regulars on this site way over-value our minor league players and I am guessing Costanzo would not have been an exception. IMHO he will never be a major league regular and may in fact never make it to the bigs at all, other than for a cup of coffee.

Players such as Costanzo make me wonder about Outman and Cardenas. Are they really as good as many here would lead to believe?

  17. I think Cardenas is the real deal (not in JD Durbin’s way), but Outman was more of a product of a bad system. Nice player, but not that great. I think moving him to the pen hurt his value.

  18. as a noted savery basher, i don’t put much weight in last nights game. i think that he might be reaching his innings limit for the season. which might explain why they have been dh’ing him. they might be shutting him down soon and want to keep him active. of course, i also don’t think that he was as good as that 5 game stretch of low earned runs would suggest. he is somewhere in between, but i am confident that his arm is tired and i believe they should shut him down. no benefit for pushing him. he won’t be in the bigs for another 2-3 seasons.

also, my boy taylor got another 2 hits last night with a walk, a stolen base and an outfield assist. slow your roll big fella…don’t show them everything at once! i friggin love that guy. he is now hitting .450 in his last 10 games with 6 xbh and 6 walks. hit .340 in july. he should be in the 10 pack soon.

  19. ha…i am objective and unbiased. i just call it like i see it.

also, i am not rooting against the guy. i want him to be a star in philly. we need him badly. i just think that his PR is ahead of his stuff/results.

  20. Any draftee has a ‘breaking in’ period where his results are secondary to his inherent talent. The window of forgiveness varies by player but I think Savery has to bomb for over a year before we start to question him.

    Like

  21. Savery has looked fairly decent this year…he does appear to be hitting the wall though…why not let him DH the rest of the year and continue to do bullpen sessions instead of pitching anymore innings? Is there a precedent for that?

  22. I saw Costanzo play quite a bit. He had a very good arm and fair range. His hands were a little stiff. Decent speed for a big guy. When I saw him he hadn’t picked up the ability to recognize pitches, breaking stuff away was a mystery to him. I do believe he will make it to the show but not have much of a impact.

  23. the mystery continues why donald has not been moved to 3rd. from my gut to yours, as ive said all year the kid is a star in waiting. guys who should not be here, taguchi, 1 hit doesnt cut it. jenkins he has a higher so to bb ratio than howard and can not hit a low breaking ball, golson should be up. marson should be up and playing right after the olympics. same with donald. happ is not a reliever.
