Another bad week for the Reading Phillies. The team not only lost 5 out of 7 games on the week, but also lost an excellent prospect in Josh Outman. I wish Outman the best of luck in what looks to be a very promising MLB career. Even though Outman is gone, the Reading Phillies still have plenty of prospects that look to help the big league club in the near future. Lets take a look at the game recaps…
Game Recaps
7/17 – Reading Phillies at Bowie Baysox
The Phils got kicked around in a 7 inning game, as it was the first game of a double header. The final score was an 8-1 loss for the Phils. Edgar Garcia (LP) got absolutely hammered for the second game in a row, only pitching 2.2 innings while giving up 7 hits, 3 walks, and 8 earned runs. He also allowed 2 home runs while striking out 1 batter. It was an ugly, ugly performance by Garcia. Marson and Sellers were the only Phillies who did anything of not for the offense. Marson had his first multi-hit game since July 3rd, with a 2-3 outing which included 1 double. Sellers, meanwhile, collected the teams only rbi with a solo home run.
7/17 – Reading Phillies at Bowie Baysox
The Phils got beat again in the night game, as the Baysox collected their double header sweep. It wasn’t quite as embarrassing this time around, as the Phils only lost by a score of 4-2. The pitching was mediocre, as 30 year old Travis Minix (LP) allowed 3 earned runs in 4 innings of work. Walls came on in relief to pitching 2 sound innings of 1 hit ball. The offense was again stagnant, with Slayden leading the way by means of a 2-4 night.
7/18 – Reading Phillies at Bowie Baysox
New day, same result. The Baysox continued their winnings ways, triumphing over the Phils by a score of 7-4. Even though the Phils lost, yet again, there was some very good news on the day. With Carrasco starting and working on a pitch count, he lasted 4 innings, giving up only 2 hits, 1 walk, and 1 run, all while recording 4 strikeouts. Overholt (LP) came on in relief of Carrasco in the fifth, and promptly gave up 6 earned runs in 1.2 innings, but that is alright. The offense, while still lacking for hits, did not lack power on the evening. The 4 Reading runs all came on solo home runs hit by Donald, Marson, Eylward, and Harris. Unfortunately, the Phils collected just 2 other hits on the night.
7/19 – Reading Phillies at Bowie Baysox
New day, different result! The Phillies finally won a game against the Baysox behind a great effort by Castro (WP). Castro lasted 7 innings in leading the Phils to a 5-1 victory. Castro gave up 5 hits, 2 walks, and 1 earned run. He also struck out 5 on the evening. Castro now has a 6-1 record and a 3.95 era in 13 starts for the Reading Phillies. The offense was nothing special, but did enough to win. Donald lead the way, going 3-5 with 1 double, 1 home run, and 2 rbi’s. Marson and Slayden also collected 1 hit each on the evening.
7/20 – Reading Phillies at Bowie Baysox
Luckily for the Phils, they won the previous game to avoid a 5 game sweep at the hands of the Baysox. Yes, it was another loss for the Phils, albeit in a close game, with the final score being 7-6. Durbin got roughed up for the first time in 5 games as he lasted only 4.2 innings, giving up 10 hits, 1 walk, and 6 earned runs. The offense battled back, however, to tie the game and send it into extra innings. The offense was lead by the top half of the lineup, with the first 5 batters collecting 10 of the team’s 11 hits. Appert, Donald, and Marson all turned in multi-hit games. In the end, it was not to be, as one Sam Walls (LP) allowed a solo home run in the 10th inning to end the game.
7/21 – Reading Phillies at New Britain Rock Cats
Overjoyed to see any team other than the Baysox, the Phils won 3-1 behind a nice starting pitching effort by Brummett (WP). Brummett lasted 6 innings, giving up only 4 hits, but also allowed 5 walks which lead to a single earned run being scored. He struck out 4 in the game. The offense, like has been the case for the majority of the week, stunk up the joint. Donald and Golson both sacrificed a runner home, while sellers led the team going 3-4.
7/22 – Reading Phillies at New Britain Rock Cats
Edgar Garcia started for the Phils and got rocked once again, pitching only 5.1 innings while allowing 5 earned on 6 hits and 3 walks. The offense was lead by Marson and Slayden, who both had 2-4 nights.
The scouts were there again last night to watch Carrasco, he pitched reasonably well after the first inning. I have a feeling the Reading roster is going to look different in a week, but we’ll see.
Thanks for the report.

Something tells me Carrasco is gone…soon.

There’s no one left on the market that I think is worth giving up Carrasco.
Great report, I’ll repeat from yesterday – another quality outing from Brummet.
What is Castro’s ultimate fate? They must have thought highly of him to burn a spot ont he 25-man all year when they got him in the Rule 5.

Slyden seems to be slowing down—what is the story? Perhaps he has no protection behind him . I had hoped that he would be a help as a 5th outfielder/pinch hitter.

I see Outman got smacked around in his only outing for Oakland’s AA. Cardenas has hit in 4 of 5 games but is barely at the Mendosa line. Spencer is hot, hot, hot. Of course, it’s only 5 games. Blanton was, well… Blanton or maybe Eaton. I guess I’m sort of off topic.
Trading Carrasco scares me. We’ll need starters this year… next year (Moyer will be gone) and the year after. If someone can point out who those replacements will be, I’ll trade the farm

I wonder if we should start calling Greg Golson “Randall Flagg” since he has become the Walking Dude – two more walks tonight, and seven BBs in the last five games.

I deleted quite a few comments from this topic. This is the place to discuss the Reading Phillies roster and the week that was, not a place to discuss the merits of Shane Victorino. No apologies are necessary, no hard feelings here, I just warned a while back that I’d start deleting comments that veered topics off course. I guess I’ll be more vigilant in starting a daily discussion thread so you guys have an outlet to discuss things non-prospects.

These Golson walks are baffling me, how does a guy draw 14 walks in 68 games then 7 in 5???? Did someone give him a tip on how to recognize a curveball or something? Anyone? Bueller?

Bad opposing pitching?

Maybe he was reading the blogs during his time off/injury and realized that everybody was right and that was what he needed to do. If this fling becomes a long-term affair, we may have a stud on our hands.

Well, let’s hope he keeps it up.

I have read all about Reading’s week and the name I seemed to have missed is Clay Harris. This is the guy who tore up Clearwater and then two weeks got promoted to Reading where as of tonight he is hitting about .350. What I like is the kid gets promoted and his strike out rate goes down rather than up. And he gets a lot of walks. He knows the strike zone which is refreshing for our teams. I also think he has more power than he is showing right now. I think heis the jewel in the farm system. I rate them as our top two position prospects (where will they play Harris?) Harris #1 and Marson #2. You can take Donald, Golson and maybe Sleyton as the #3. to me Golson simply strikes out too much. Donald is a comer but how far I can’t tell. Sleyton might be some help as a bench player in the majors. Other than that, who is there? Michael Taylor has disappointed after a huge Lakewood trip. Clearwater is still difficult for him and it shouldn’t be. Not if he is as good as I thought. Anyway, give him another two weeks and see if he takes off. One can only hope.
Pitchers? I see Happ this year and after that a wing and a prayer. Carrasco is still up and down. Garcia has fallen on his face at AA as did Carpenter. Bastrado is hurt but he has a long way to go before they even know what they have in him, if anything.
I don’t think Castro is real. Brummet is a middle of the rotation prospect who has to do more at Reading. His comannd needs to get better and he is already 25.
Savery has turned it around at Clearwater and maybe should bounce up to Reading in a couple of weeks and test the waters there. He is a real propsect as is (in my opinion) Drew Naylor. Monasterious has taken a step backward. Carpeter failed once but will get another shot but he has that one strike against him.
Not much anywhere.
And the big team is swinging like a bunch of little leaguers. Oh man, it hurts to be a Philadelphia fan.

Joey you seem to get pretty excited over small sample sizes. Clay Harris is a non prospect, and Garcia is a 20 year old at AA. Pretty impressive, no? Have you looked at Michael Taylor’s last 20 games?
