Im going to try and post links and updates from now on when I find prospect related chats, so hopefully we can get Phillies questions answered. Today, KLaw is doing a chat at 1PM Eastern, and hes normally good for an hour and a half or so. Get your questions in, hopefully we can get a few answered, and I’ll update this post with any Phillies related nuggets.

He didn’t really answer anything on the Phils prospects yet…he blew off the one question on Outman.

He blew off a lot of questions overall, he only answered a few in which he actually gave some insight.

It was more of a chat about cooking than anything else. I must have submitted 25 Lou Marson questions.

It was actually rather annoying…he seemed to be in an odd mood…he’s usually more responsive to questions.

Danny (Philly): Any chance Dominck Brown cracks the Top 100 next year?
SportsNation Keith Law: Not likely. He’s not tearing up the Sally League.

I thought he answered the Outman question. He does not see Outman’s eventual role as starting, but thought the switch to relieving in the minors was a little quick. What is wrong with that as an answer?

I was kinda hoping for a little bit more than that is all.

Keith Law isn’t impressive at all. He’s the same guy who says Kyle Kendrick belongs in the minors. ESPN has employed some bad baseball analysts these days. Law, Neyer, Phillips, and Kurkjian just to name a few. A guy like Dayn Perry would make it a complete set.

i know people look at this guy as the all knowing man behind the curtain, but i think that he is a bit over rated.
think about it. there are thousands of players in the minor leagues. how can one person have real in depth knowledge of all of these guys. whenever i hear him, i think that his answers are very high level – “good fastball, needs to work on this curve.” what does that really tell us? to truly understand a prospect and what that person is doing to improve takes diving in. you can’t just look at periferals all the time and draw conclusions. well, you can, just that you will be wrong a lot. i am sure he thought rick ankiel was the next don drysdale. i can hear him now, “power pitcher with great stuff, this guy is the real deal.” too bad he had nothing between the ears.
“this game is 90% mental and the other half is physical.” he doesn’t really know anything about these players mental aspects.

Some of these comments are over the top, especially with regard to a guy who has taken time to come here before and answer your questions. I don’t think he claims to be the “all knowing man behind the curtain”, but his quick fire knowledge regarding minor league players certainly does put him at the top of the list.
How on Earth do you quantify and truly understand the mental makeup of guys you don’t have time to sit down and talk to for extended periods of time? He’s not a scout for a team anymore, his job is to see as many players as he can and make evaluations of their baseball ability. How is he to know what kid is a space cadet, and what kid is really well put together mentally? He doesn’t have the ability to invite every kid over to his house for cookies and ask him 40 questions about his baseball drive and desire.
No one is ever 100% right regarding prospects. Keith has admitted tons of times when he misread a guy. That takes more character than someone saying “oh he was wrong about so and so”, considering that person only has to talk when pointing out the flaw of someone else.

i think that you just agreed with my point.
all i am saying is that people put too much stock into what he says. it is a data point, but not the answer. i think too often people read him like the gospel. but the truth is to truly know a prospect, you have to peal back the layers. he simply doesn’t have time to do that.
and nothing i said was over the top. i didn’t insult him or call him names. i am just poining out what you said…i.e. don’t read to much into a 10 word snipet about a player.

Keith Law knows more about MLB prospects than pretty much anyone posting here so we should probably lay off the guy…and let’s never put him in the same sentence as Dayn Perry who knows about as much about baseball as my scottish terrier.
On his comments about Kendrick…he was being fair, Kendrick was playing like crap at the time and his secondary numbers hardly scream “Long career”. Law isn’t alone in believing this.
I was hoping for some more comments about Phillies prospects but it didn’t happen…crap happens.

I think some folks rail at Keith Law because he doesn’t share their over-rated valuation of some of our players. I’ll admit I thought more of Outman as a potential major league starter than Law apparently does, but it is likely telling that Gillick seems to agree with Keith. How wrong is he saying Kendrick should be in the minors? Bad peripherals and the 4.93 ERA is not good either. Across the board, Kyle’s numbers are worse than last season. That is a concern. Law doesn’t spend a ton of time commenting on Phillies prospects, because we aren’t overendowed with blue chippers.
