Friday was a busy day for the ‘Pigs as they attempt to revamp their roster towards medicority and remove some of the dead weight they acquired.
Infielder Chris Woodward was released presumably to make room for Oscar Robles on the roster. Woodward, 31, was somewhere between bad and horrible during his month with the ‘Pigs hitting .206 with no homers and 1 RBI in 63 at bats, while commiting numerous critical errors. Having watched Woodward several times in person, it was clear his head was somewhere else, disappointing for a player with the major league expereince he had.
Reliever Vic Darensberg, 37, was released by the ‘Pigs as well. The last outing for Darensberg was Wednesday where it pretty much appeared he was pitching batting practive to the Syracuse Chiefs, giving up 5 straight hits. Darensberg, a lefty was 0-2 with a 6.52 ERA with the ‘Pigs and gave up 13 hits in 9.2 innings. Picked up by the ‘Pigs is 6’3 lefty Les Walrond. Walrond, 31, was pitching in the Cubs organization for (AAA) Iowa and was 1-1 with a 6.55 ERA in 7 appearances. Opposing hitters were hitting .355 against him. Last year he was 11-5 for Iowa in 27 appearances (24 starts). He had a 4.77 ERA, 48 walks, 93 strikeouts in his 137.2 innings and the opposition hit .308 against him.
Sent back to Reading once again is OF Javon Moran. He was hitting .211 for Lehigh Valley with no homers, 2 RBI’s and 2 stolen bases in his 19 AB’s. Taking Moran’s spot on the roster if OF Jon Knott. Knott, 29, was playing for (AAA) Rochester and was hitting .182 in 55 at bats this season for them Knott is a big guy (6’3, 225) with some power, and played for Norfolk (AAA) last year hitting .250 with 13 HR and 34 RBI’s in 288 at bats last year. He struck out 80 times in those 288 at bats.
I can hardly believe I am saying this but the acquisitions statistics are actually worse, than the players they are replacing.
Do you think this may also be a sign that Rollins isn’t getting better? I think I heard Robles was added to the 40 man roster. Will he be betting some reps in the minors and then brought up? I agree Woodward was unbelievable bad.
Darensbourg was also pretty bad but what about JD Durbin? Could anyone be worse than that?

Robles was added to the 40 man and I do believe that there is concern about Rollins’ recovery. With how poor Woodward has been, I think the Phils believe that Robles provides better insurance at this point. If Rollins’ injury lasts much longer, I think you might see Harmon sent back down so he can get playing time rather than sitting on the Phils bench and Robles called up after he gets some at bats in with the ‘Pigs.
Durbin has been very, very bad , however he is younger than Darensberg and has produced (at least to some small extent) more recently (the end of last year for the Phils) and in a different role than Darensberg. With Steve Kline in the pen, the ‘Pigs have a lefty that can get some outs, making Darensberg expendable to take a look at Les Walrond.

in other AAA news, Gio Gonzalez has had 2 straight poor outings in the PCL… not terribly conspicuous in itself, however in his latest outing he went 4 innings, walked 5 and struck out none. Numbers like that portend an injury of some sort. Just an fyi for those who like to keep track of old farmhands.

I only wish I lived there just so I could actually wear one of these to a game! LOL!

Possibly Robles was added to the 40-man roster simply because he is out of options? I don’t anything about him as a player so I’m not sure if that is the case or not.

Do we still refer to the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs as a professional football team? I think Reading should boot some of their players up to Triple AAA.
How would you like waiting a year for a team and then getting this slop?
Incompetence knows no limits in the Phillies organization.
Now Gillick is leaving and lacky Amaro will get the job because he is great as a dinner guestat the Montgomery’s, the Giles, or the Betz’s. And he knows when to speak and when to nod “yes”.
Or something.
CLAIRE, SELL THE TEAM TO JOHN MIDDLETON! PLEASE!!!!
PS Has anyone noticed that Cole has gone into the tank the last four games. A nice ERA of about 4.90. A WHIP of 1.20+. And a Joey rating (which means nothing to any of you) of 100.56 which is a #3 hurler. Down from nearly 104.0 which is an ACE. (His numbers aren’t bad collectively but he has been living on his great start. he isn’t pitching well and he’s all we’ve got.)
Oh yes the combined era for all five starters is around 4.50 so all we need is 5 runs a game and we win.
And when is Howard going to stop lunging at off speed pitches below his knees? It’s been five weeks now. Hey Ryan, it’s MAY!!!! (And 8 million wasn’t enough?)
And when is Jimmy coming home?
Thank God for Burntlett. He CAN play the position even if he can’t hit. And thanks for Pat and Chase. without them, we’d be dead for sure.
I know he could still fail, but Antonio made that difficult jump to AA and pitched very well. He earns a career Joey rating of 103.57 which in real terms indicates a #1. (Now don’t jump up and down, I know its the minors and we have to see how he does at double AA. But he did better than Carpenter. And better than Carraso and Outman last year when they moved up. So small of stature so far, is not holding him back. Hey, maybe he is for real.
Oh yes, we have some Joey nuggets growing at Lakeland. Two pitchers and three hitters, one a power hitter. If only they hold thier form as they make their way up through the system.
We can only hope.
