Brad Harman called up, Rollins to DL

Just figured I’d throw this up now. The Phillies finally did the right thing putting Jimmy Rollins on the DL. Brad Harman gets the call, and I can only imagine that is because Jason Donald still isn’t 100% after being hit on the hand a week ago. Harman has come a long way after a really disappointing 2006 to making his big league debut less than 2 years later. Heres hoping for all the best for Brad.

  1. Yup…I won’t miss Bruntlett one bit. It will be nice to see how Harmon does on the Big Club. The whole JRoll thing really pisses me off though. The trainers and Uncle Charlie should have stepped up when he was originally injured and put him in the DL. I know he’s essentiall the Team Captain and League MVP but they had to know he was way too injured to come back quickly and that he was just being stubborn. Now he’s gone till the 2nd week of May.

  2. So does this mean Cardenas gets called up to Reading? Wouldn’t think so just to fill a spot especially if hes not 100 percent, but he really was crushing the ball at Clearwater.

  3. One quick question? Why T.J. Bohn? He’s not exactly lighting things up in Allentown (.187 in 43 ABs). Don’t we have any better options…even Pascucci or Watson (the other AAA OFs) are doing significantly better than that.

  4. I’m am so incensed with the Phillies right now I don’t know what to do with myself. Pinch-hitting Jimmy has ensured that he miss at least a month (can’t make his DL visit retroactive and I’m sure that it didn’t help the healing process.) A few things.

    1) Harman probably won’t play- he’s a decent prospect but nowhere near ML ready- he was just getting used to AA, and not particulalry well. This really just cuts into his development time. Donald would have been more ready to make the jump but alas, he is injured.

    2) Even if Cardenas weren’t injured, he would not be getting the call to Reading, nor does he deserve one. He is certainly a very good prospect, but he is not knocking the cover off of the ball: in fact, his numbers appear pretty soft. While hitting .347 is quite encouraging, BA can also be misleading. He has taken only 3 walks in 49 at bats making is OBP only .373 (low considering the BA). Additionally, he only has 3 extra base hits out of 17 total hits for a .408 slugging% in a ballpark more favorable to hitters than Lakewood. This isn’t atrocious but it shows that he still has a lot of work to do, so he is not, in fact, hitting the cover off of the ball. I don’t believe that these numbers have any bearing on how good of a player he will eventually be: it is a very small sample-size, he is battling back issues and has not filled out. However, he should not be pushed any further this season in my opinion.

    3) Why TJ Bohn? Why not Brandon Watson?

  5. James –

Do you think the decision to call up Harman rather than Donald is due to the fact that Harman is on the 40-man and Donald isn’t? I’d have to think that plays in the decision.

Regardless, will the Phils play him at shortstop? Since I’m guessing this is only a cup of coffee for him, I wonder if he’ll go back down to Reading, or will they sentenc… I mean promote him to Lehigh. (Given Lehigh’s horribility, I hope he goes back to Reading).

If Cardenas is healthy (doesn anyone have any info on that), should he be called up to Reading? I’d have to lean towards saying “no,” since the High-A to AA jump is the toughest one to do.

Congrats to Brad Harman and best of luck to him.

  6. The Donald situation is very strange. He injured his hand almost two weeks ago. But — he was in the starting lineup last Saturday and seemed to be swinging the bat fine and throwing fine. So — what happened? Did he come back too soon, or is this a new injury?

Harman won’t play much. He hasn’t even played SS for a year. And, how does a .222 average at AA translate to the majors? And Bohn below .200 — what a joke! This is the best organizational depth at the upper level? And both Bohn and the recently departed LaForest were on the 40-man going into the winter.

Cardenas has a strained back, and has sat out of the last 5 games. He is not on the DL though, so hopefully it is nothing too severe.

  8. Why T.J. Bohn?

My best guess is that he was a Gillick prospect back in Seattle, where Watson wasn’t. Either that or they preferred a righthanded bat to a lefthanded bat.

Congrats to Harman, though it does show how thin the upper portion of our minor leagues is (i.e. that someone hitting .222 in AA is the one called up when an injury occurs). This would have been Olmedo instead of Harman had Olmedo not requested his release, correct?

  9. On the issue of Donald: I went to an R-Phils gme last week (Saturday, I think) when he got hit on the hand a second time. Like someone above me said, he was swinging and throwing just fine.

I assume the big team didn’t call him up instead is because they were afraid he would injure his hand worse. Not sure if Donald is on the 40. I would asume so.

As for TJ Bohn, I went to an Iron Pigs game this past Friday (the 18th), and he was terrible. He went 2-4, with one run scored and he batted into a fielder’s choice. Val Pascucci (Frida’s DH, though he does play the OF) did a tiny bit better. He went 2 -4 as well, but with a solo home run, and a deep single. He struck out and hit a liner to the shortstop in his other at-bats. I presume that he wasn’t called up for the reasons that James said. He is not on the 40 man, while Bohn is.

The IronPigs are really, really, really terribletis year, and they can’t provide much depth for the big team when (not if) they need it. This year’s Reading club is one of the best. They won the GCL championship four years ago, the SALLY league championship two years ago, and, as Jeff can tell you, the FSL championship last year. Expect mre calls from Reading than Allentown inthe near phuture.

  10. Harman’s strictly an emergency utlility guy who was playing SS for Australia in the World Cup games in Taipei last Fall and in the Aussie national tournament in January.

  11. Well at least they can have Outback Steakhouse night down at the Bank now…I heard that Rollins has a “high ankle spain” which has a fairly long recovery rate and could effect his game all year. Does anyone recall the typical recovery rate for a high-ankle sprain. The Phillies are saying 3 weeks from the date of the injury but I don’t tend to buy their opinion on anything medical…

  12. Unfortunately, Rollins going on the DL was overdue. All you had to do was watch him try to run to first when he pinch hit to truly appreciate how bad he is. Hopefully, he didn’t make it worse because its a bad injury. I’m sure Harman got called up because he’s already on the 40 man, he’s healthy, can play 2B and SS, Woodward has ben awful, and because being a Ute is probably Harman’s upside anyway.

  13. Thanks for the news on Donald. Didn’t know he was hit a second time on the arm. I hope this isn’t a longer term injury. Also, listening to the R-Phils game, Carpenter displayed his splitter in the third inning of his last outing. The Harrisburg announcer said it looked excellent. Batters became aware of it for a few inings and he seemed to be the pitcher he was at Clearwater last year. Then he never used it again and got knocked out in the 6th inning.

  14. is it strange to you that donald was not called up? not really if donald played well it would embarras gillick. as for cardenas haying a .373 obp and a .345 ba, ill take ahitter who does not walk but hits anyday. woulr you rather have a hitter who hits .280 with an obp of .373. not me you can learn to walk, you cannot learn to hit at this level . basiclly you would rather have a lite hitting good eye shortstop than say jose reyes when he 1st came up. check the ops not the obp then youll see the fallacy of your argument. to comack 15

  15. Harman’s rise from this time last year is great to see. Jason Donald may show up when rosters expand in the fall. Any sooner would be a surprise.

TJ Bohn is a Quad-A player in a slump. Maybe now he’ll want it more than ever. The ‘Pigs need him in a big way. Meanwhile, I prefer Brandon Watson for the Phillies, who doesn’t give away as many ABs, can steal bases and create runs with speed. With Jimmy, Shane, Lopes and Boure all gone, the speed element of the offense is suffering. Vic is due back soon, but will he be in top running form? For that matter, when will Jimmy be in top running form? Missing Bourn more than ever.
