  1. Encouraging stuff from Sampson, Durant, and Taylor. Does anyone think they are rushing Mattair and Galvis and hurting them for the future?

  2. I don’t think its going to hurt them. Position players need the reps. Mattair and Galvis are both young for the SAL, if they can hold their heads above water it will help their development. Playing against other players in competitive games is probably better for their mental health than clowning around against their teammates in extended spring training.

  3. That’s reassuring to hear, James. I’d be interested to see how the left side of the infield looks defensively, since they haven’t gotten it going with the bats yet.

Also, an encouraging sign for both of them is the walks: Mattair has 6 in just 41 PAs, while Galvis sports a 5:1 BB:K ratio right now. Is it too simplistic to conclude from those numbers that their pitch recognition seems decent, but they’re just having some problems hitting the best pitching they’ve ever faced?

  4. I’ll try to get to a game next week & watch the defense & other stuff that does not show up in the ‘numbers’. I’ll see about setting up a pre game interview, be happy to take suggestions for which players & what questions.

  5. With third base the greatest future need in the organization, I am interested in Travis Mattair. He is struggling mightily in the field and at the bat. He seems to be pressing to be the next Rolen. Tell him to relax, stay within himself and we are behind him if you get to talk to him.

  6. I’m still not worried about Mattair. If hes hitting .190 in June, I’ll be concerned. But he didn’t face anything close to this level of competition in Washington in high school, and he’s really focusing on baseball for the first time.

  7. As I mentioned on PhilaPhans a few weeks back, I am working for the BlueClaws this year and I am enjoying really following these young prospects. I’ve met many of them and they are a good group of guys. I think they’re going to grow together and I’ve already seen a lot of improvement. You can definitely tell they are learning all the time. The errors have got to stop, though.

  8. I’ve been watching the BlueClaws games and I see that Myers is hitting in the 7th, 8th or 9th spot and sometimes he does not start, he comes in the 7th or 8th innings, getting 1 at bat, while everyone else gets atlease 4 at bats the weather is cold and on the only warm day, he was not in the line up, he did not play. I’m sure when those elements change his stats will change.
