2008 Minor League Workout Groups Announced

Several people have emailed me or messaged me asking about the 2008 workout group assignments.

I was finally able to get my hands on them today.

Most of you are aware that these groups by no means indicate what the actual AAA, AA, and other rosters will actually look like in the end.  This is just where the guys are working out now.  There are still going to be many guys sent down from the big league ST roster to take spots away, a lot of players will be cut, and many free agents will be signed to minor league spots after other teams cut players.

That being said … here is a link to the Current Workout Groups in PDF version (sorry, but I didn’t feel like re-typing them from scratch) and for those who also wanted this the 2008 Minor League Spring Training Games Schedule.

  1. I’m going to guess Drew Taylor is really Drew Naylor. In any event, never heard of Drew Taylor and he is not in Group 4, so we should have.

  2. That’s good to know about Naylor. My only comments regarding the work groups are as follows:

    1. Where is RHP Jarrod Freeman? Hope its not bad news?

    2. Since I now believe Daniel Schwartz is Daniel Schwartz (and, thus, not Daniel Schmidt) is Daniel Schmidt still in Australia? How about Alan Schoenberger?

    3. What’s the record for number of pitchers signed out of independent leagues in one offseason? Jared Locke, Daniel Schwartz, Jared Simon, Charlie Merricks, Charles Vartanian

  3. Word from the Wyoming football fans is that McDonald delayed his enrollment from last January to September. Thus, he’s giving himself this baseball season as, most likely, a final try.

  4. I see some guys from the dsl and vsl teams does that mean they are staying in the states to play this year. I am especially interested to see if the 16/17 year old C S. Valle. stays states side

  5. andyb is gonna write a report sometime before the minor league starts, talking about all of the VSL and DSL guys in camp, so he should be able to cover Valle and others there.

  6. Most of the new DSL and VSL guys on that list will remain stateside and play for the GCL team. The changes in the visa laws make it easier to keep a few more in extended spring. That being said, it is always possible a few will get sent back to the DSL and VSL for more playing time if there is a logjam at their position after the draft. One or two could also get cut in the final round of Spring training cuts.

  7. The minor league ST games start tomorrow (Tuesday the 11th) so I’ll try to head to the complex to get an idea of who is where. It will be the “Group3/Clearwater” and “Group4/Lakewood and below” squads in the home/Carpenter Complex games, so it will be hard to tell much about the AAA/AA guys except perhaps who is already below that level.
