Biggest steps forward; Donald and Carpenter

So says Kevin Goldstein at Baseball Prospectus..

Philadelphia Phillies

A third-round pick last June, infielder Jason Donald surprised even those within the organization with his line-drive bat, gap power, and keen batting eye; hitting .304/.395/.473 between Low-A Lakewood and High-A Clearwater.

Honorable Mention: Right-hander Drew Carpenter mixes three average pitches, throws strikes, and keeps hitters on their toes by changing speeds–all of which helped him put up a 3.20 ERA at Clearwater while winning 17 games. Defensive-minded catcher Lou Marson made big improvements with the bat, hitting .288/.373/.407 in the Florida State League.

Ottawa Lynx Report Week Twenty Three

Please Note:Early next week I will post a 2007 season review for the Ottawa Lynx.

Ottawa finished up the 2007 season with a four game home stand against the Syracuse Chiefs, four games which typified this hugely disappointing season for the Lynx, (at least in the won-lost column). There was a walk off win, a couple of blown leads, mental errors and sloppy defence and the Lynx lost the final three games of the season. Ottawa began this final series of the 2007 season with a 5-4 extra inning victory over the Chiefs with the unlikely hero being Danny Sandoval. Lynx starter Landon Jacobsen lasted six innings and allowed four runs, only one of which was earned. Wayne Lydon tripled to lead off the game for Syracuse and scored one batter later on a single. Ottawa would take the lead two innings later on a one out, three run home run by Joe Thurston, his fifth of the year, hit deep over the right field wall. Sloppy Ottawa defence and a questionable choice of where to throw the ball allowed Syracuse to retake the lead in the top of the fifth. Jacobsen made a bad throw to first, well over the head of Dusty Wathan on a very routine ground ball. The next batter, Al Quintana, hit a fly ball to right, not routine but very catchable which Matt Padgett got turned around on and let drop for a double. With one out and runners on second and third, a routine grounder to third baseman Brennan King would have had Quintana at the plate but King inexplicably threw to first, allowing the tying run to score. A single by John-Ford Griffin gave Syracuse a one run lead. Ottawa tied the game in the fifth on a long Matt Padgett home run, had a chance for more but Sandoval was caught stealing second and Gookie Dawkins struck out leaving two runners on. The game remained tied at 4-4 until the bottom of the tenth. In the Syracuse half of the tenth inning Joe Besinius, (3-4), had relieved Ryan Cameron and had worked his way out of a two on and one out jam, Jason Jaramillo picking off John-Ford Griffin at first and then Besinius struck out Chad Mottola to end the inning. King walked to lead off the Lynx tenth but was forced at second on a poor sacrifice bunt attempt by Wathan. But Wathan would redeem himself one out later, scoring all the way from first on the double by Sandoval, sliding in just ahead of the throw from right and giving Ottawa a 5-4 win in what would turn out to be their final victory of the season.

Rank these three prospects

If you were compiling a list of Phillies prospects, in what order would you place these three players;

Josh Outman, Drew Carpenter, Adrian Cardenas

Give your reasons (if you’d like) in the comments below.

Agenda for the next few weeks

In the next few weeks, I’m going to try and post a few profiles of players, but the majority of it is going to be discussions to try and see where you guys are on certain prospects. The reason for this is, I am currently in the process of working on and finishing up the player grades for this past season, but this year’s model is going to be much more in depth, and I’ve spent the better part of 3 months working on this process. Not only will I have ratings for every Phillies prospect, but I’ll have positional rankings that count every prospect in the minors, as well as rankings for the other teams in our division, for comparison’s sake. All of this takes time, as I have to manually enter a lot of statistics into my formula to derive the numbers I need.

So, I ask for your patience. If something big comes up, I’ll certainly write about it, but the minor league season is over until the Arizona Fall League starts, so it will be quiet. And speaking of the Arizona Fall League…If you like this blog and you’d like to contribute, I’m looking for one person to write a daily post on the Arizona Fall League, specifically our players there. You don’t have to write 7 days a week, but I’d like someone who is willing to write at least 4 times a week while the league is in session, which is only about a month’s worth of games. So, if you are interested, send an e-mail to phuturephillies at hotmail dot com and put “Arizona Fall League Writer” in the title. I’ll review what I receive in the next few days and get back to everyone who inquires. Thanks in advance.

Reading ended its season at 70-71, in 5th place in the Southern division, 11.5 games out of first with a very bad taste in their mouth after getting destroyed over the weekend by last place Harrisburg. Taking a final look at players among the league leaaders, Greg Jacobs was 5th in batting avergage (.310), first in slugging %(.539), 7th in RBI’s (83), 8th in homers (21)6th in hits (143), and 2nd in doubles (39).  Jason Hill was 9th in batting average (.302).  Mike Costanzo was 10th in slugging % (.490), 9th in hits (137), 2nd in runs (92), 1st in strikeouts (157), 5th in walks (75), 6th in RBI’s (86), and 2nd in homers (27).  Mike Spidale was 6th in triples with 6.  Javon Moran, although only playing in Reading for half of the year was 5th in stolen bases with 24. Chris Key was the only notable in the pitching categories with 18 saves, ranking 6th. Continue reading Reading Report

Clearwater Threshers Post Season Begins Tuesday

The Clearwater Threshers clinched their first playoff berth since 1999 on Saturday night by sweeping a double header against the Lakeland Flying Tigers.  Andrew Carpenter threw six innings of one-hit baseball in the first game with his only hit allowed being a home run as the Threshers won the first game 11-1.  In the second game of the night Anthony Bastardo got his first start for the Threshers after being promoted from Lakewood.  Bastardo gave up four runs on five hits with 12 ks and three walks in the game.

Word came down in the top of the fifth inning of the second game that both Dunedin and Tampa had lost their games, so a Threshers win would clinch their playoff berth.  At that point the score was tied 4-4 so the game became crucial for the Threshers.  The team went on to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 6-4, but Lakeland made it interesting in the final frame picking up a run and getting two base runners before the Threshers could seal a victory with the 6-5 margin. DSL Postseason Report

The 2007 DSL Phillies had an amazing season, winning its division on the strength of an unprecedented 22-game winning streak before losing their final game.  In one 35-game stretch the DSL Phillies went 32-3.  For the season the Phillies went 45-18 and won their division by 4 games over the Athletics 1 squad.  Their .714 winning percentage was the 3rd best in the entire DSL, though the team lost their playoff series against the Angels 2 games to 1.
