Andrew Carpenter Picks Up Record Tying 15th Win in Clearwater

Andrew Carpenter Closes in on Clearwater Record!

Though it wasn’t his prettiest game of the year the bullpen picked him up and helped get Andrew Carpenter his record tying 15th win of the year. Andrew joins Ezequiel Astacio of the 2003 Clearwater Phillies as the only Clearwater pitcher to have ever earned 15 wins in a season. Andrew currently has a record of 15-6 and is 8-2 since the all-star break with an ERA of 2.22 over that stretch.

With the win tonight the Threshers remain in second place in their division 3 games behind the league leading Dunedin Bluejays. Five of the Threshers remaining fourteen games will be against the Bluejays including three later this week. The Threshers have a double header at Dunedin on Thursday and a game at Dunedin on Friday. In the final week of the season they face Dunedin at home for two games before closing the season out with five games over the three final days of the season including two double headers against the last place Lakeland Tigers. The Threshers do control their own destiny at this point, so I can only hope that they can get to the playoffs for the first time since 1999 here in Clearwater.

In other Threshers news:

Jason Donald continues to have a great season hitting a team high .309 and he also has a team best .514 SLG and .389 OBP.

Jeremy Slayden is cruising along hitting .288 for the season and is hitting .334 in the month of August. He leads the team with 12 HR, 64 runs, and 62 RBIs.

Lou Marson is still going strong as well hitting .284 on the year, and is second on the team in doubles (T-22) and runs (61).

Brad Harman has been vastly improved over the second half of the season hitting .295 since the all-star break vs .237 before the break. He is tied with Lou Marson at second in doubles (22), and is just one HR shy of Jeremy Slayden with 11 on the year 9 of which have come in the second half of the season.

  1. Hey PP!

I was just curious about your thoughts on Carpenter. He is somewhat of a polarizing Phillies prospects. Some people feel he doesn’t have a high ceiling while others are very high on him.

I cannot get a gauge on whether he’s a rotation guy or a bullpen arm.

And has anyone started the Jason Donald fan club? How about the Costanzo fan club? Just curious 🙂

  2. I personally have a really hard time gauging Carpenter’s ceiling. If he can remain consistent he could be a bottom of the rotation guy, the problem is his inconsistency. One game he is great holding down hits and fanning batters, and others (like tonight) he gets the job done, but needs help. They brought him out in the ninth, but put two runners on with no outs before being lifted. (BTW he did not start coming in the game in the fourth after three rehab inning from Francisco Rosario who went 3.0 with one hit and 7 Ks).

If you were serious about the Jason Donald fan club, yes, there is one http://www.jasondonaldonline.com which is run (according to Jason) by “just some girl” he met while playing in Lakewood. When you see it you may think “stalker.” It is VERY thorough going back to his high school days.

    Mike Costanzo I don’t know.

  3. Yikes, you weren’t kidding about the Donald website.

What’s up with Daniel Brauer? I guess he’s out for the year? Is he done for good?

  4. I haven’t talked to Brauer in amonth or so. Last I spoke with him he said he wasn’t sure what was up, he had some arm soreness, but no medical problems could be found.

I know he is done for the year. I hope he is not done for good. He had quite a promising, though rather short, start this season.

  5. Harman and, especially, Marson are guys I’m excited about. I hope the light has gone on for Harman; seems he’s been around for a long time, but he’s still just 21 and should start at Reading next season.

Marson IMO is one of the top ten, maybe top 5, prospects in the organization. I think his bat speaks for itself (the power should come), and he’s handled a successful staff, but any other insights on his defense would be appreciated.

  6. He’s certainly thrown out a lot of base runners this season. A far higher percenteage than any catcher I can remember in a long time here. (NOt sure what the exact stats are; it is hard to find minor league fielding stats until after the season.) I certainly think he is a solid propspect, and not that it is worth much, but one of the nicest guys on the team.
