DSL Phillies riding 19 game winning streak

The DSL Phillies have won 19 straight games….that’s pretty impressive. Baseball America gave the team a little press here, and also included notes that Freddy Galvis is done for the season after dislocating his shoulder. The article also mentions RHP Freddy Ballestas, who appears to be the best Phillies pitching prospect in the VSL, saying his fastball is up in the 91-94 range and he’s featuring a solid breaking ball as well. I will let andyb talk more about our prospects in the VSL/DSL, but I’m going to assume that Ballestas will be brought stateside next year.

  1. Ballestas is VZL, but the article talks about a 16-yr old DR pitcher as well, with 86 – 90 mph fastball. Ballestas is 20, so likely not as strong a prospect.

  2. Yeah, that was a typo. I fixed it.

He is 20, so he’s old for the league, but if his fastball is 91-94 with movement and he has a plus breaking ball, he’s still a legit prospect. Of course he’ll need to show what he can do in RK or SS ball.

  3. Interesting info. I think Agostinelli is a sharp baseball man.
He’s done very good work for the Phillies in Latin American,
and they are lucky to have him in their service. And, as he
said, a 19-game winnning strike is pretty darned good in
    any level of baseball.

  4. Plaudits to the Phils org for putting together to compete well in one of our Latin programs.

As mentioned before, in assessing how the pharm system is coming along, we need to consider the Latin program as well as our drafting people in June of each year.

Thus, though it is my hope that J-Roll woul;d spend his entire career in Philly, I notice that we have several Latino SS prospects–including that recent signing of a guy who has yet to make a mark in play–who appear to have possible big futures in the bigs. Draftees , together with 3-4 pitchers and 3-4 position players from the Latino programs would enhance greatly our prospect “goodies” and lead to sustained competitiveness for years to come when combined.

Thanks to PG…and hope that the team will soon be sold and bring aboard a CEO who doesn’t shy from investing more money in draftees than was expended in June ’07.

PG could bring success despite of instead of because of owner cheapness…who seem to stop short of complete dedication to winning at almost any cost.
