Draft and Follow deadline is tonight

PGCrosschecker and Baseball America didn’t think much of our DFE’s this year, which isn’t surprising, except that Rashad Taylor did have a pretty good season all around at Skyline CC. Nick Morreale’s father checked in today in an old thread and said the Phillies aren’t going to sign him, and that he’ll play at Mesa again next year. If he isn’t drafted by a team in June, I believe he’ll be a free agent, but I might be wrong. If you have any info on any of our other guys, please pass it along. I did some searching earlier and haven’t found anything at all. Taylor and Patrick Murray were the two guys I thought we might make a run at, but it appears nothing is going to happen.

  1. It seems to me that there is little risk and PERHAPS a big reward in signing a guy like Taylor. His stats in college look good; and it SEEMED that he would be happy with maybe 6th or 7th round $$.

Has anybody inquired at the Phils’ org what and why they’d draft & follow this guy and despite his very good numbers in 2007, not seeking to sign him??…for seemingly little $$…???

  2. The key is the actual amount. I’m sure there is a big difference to the Phillies of $50,000 and $250,000. When you consider how much money is spent on middling veterans with no upside, it doesn’t seem like much, but I’m sure it is.

  3. Not interested. Tops out at 97, sits around 93, but his secondary stuff hasn’t been there, and many see him as a bullpen guy, but Boras isn’t going to give anyone a discount. He’ll ruin the kid’s career before he settles for slot. This was from the BA blurb on him

Few specifics about his negotiations with the Diamondbacks have leaked out, though the club is believed to have offered around $3 million with Scherzer and Boras looking for roughly twice that, probably in a major league contract.

No way I’d pay him 3M, plus a 3M guaranteed major league contract. My hunch is he goes to either Washington or St Louis. I’ll touch more on that on Friday in my final mock draft.

  4. Still no word on whether the Phillies convinced any of their draft and follows to accept what was no doubt only a 5 figure offer. I am thrilled beyond belief that the DFE process is over because quite frankly, the Phillies stunk at it.
